This spring and now into the new season most of my success has been on mussels,bought from the freezer department in the local supermarket. Mussels have accounted fir well over 50+ Tench caught on feeder and float targeting two different waters.

Great vid Paul. One venue here in Ireland I'd a bumper haul of tench. All on chickpea dyed red on the bank, hair rigged with fake corn, they wouldn't touch anything else that day.

Hi Derek, that’s really interesting. Believe it or not, I was thinking of doing a video on carp fishing with chickpeas as they are such a great cheap bait. They really have been forgotten about, but the fish don’t know that 😉

Just a tip re flavouring maggots. A few drops on a couple of cotton wool balls. Just pop them into the bait box the night before. 👍

In terms of meat, (I havent fished properly for years) i used to always keep a jar of paprika handy, and made paprika meat for every session, the tench went nuts for it!

Interesting films paul. One thing I have a different opinion on is that casters are loads easier to keep on the bank for several days than maggots ESPECIALLY RED MAGGOTS. You know my background Paul and you know my bait experience. You will no doubt have noticed that red maggots tend to be slightly smaller than other colours. They also have less tolerance for heat and tend to die quicker than other colours in hot weather. Get any maggots wet (if it rains) and they are often buggered. The point about loads of maize is correct but casters are still easier to keep on the bank with no refrigerator. Try simply putting them in a black bin liner (or smaller doggy bag), squeezing all the air out then tying up and putting inside another black bag. With no light or air penetration the casters will remain the same colour for weeks. They will start to smell after a few days but this is easily resolved by just washing them. You can also store them in a sealed polystyrene box and if this is kept in the cool (under your bedchair) the casters won't even start to smell for a good 5-7 days.

Really good video, do you work for Nash,? wild tench that never seen corn will eat it, I found this on wild water same for wild carp, and I found the same with pop ups, no one putting boilie in but they still love a pop up,

Helo paul i am now joining a big 100 acre gravel pit in new season .which is mainly open water few wooded areas . my question is do tench actively look four sodium like the carp.in baiting situtions thanks

Hi there, yep all freshwater fish need some sodium (because it tends to be lost primarily from the gills, and is an essential nutrient. The opposite applies in saltwater (one of the reasons not many fish live in both fresh and salt). There is quite a lot of salt in many baits already though, often just though ingredients such as fishmeal's. Tight lines ! Paul

Meat is a great bait but you can't trust it on the alarms, small silvers can easily whittle it away in a couple of minutes without moving the feeder
