Ray stands alone on the Kinks pedestal. But can't deny the contributions of brother Dave. Dave's singing and playing a MAJOR part of the Kinks sound!🙌🎶🎵🎸

They had a very good Drummer and Basist
@aarongoff11112 күн бұрын
@@VonRyansExpress-v3r Yes. Avory was solid on drums. They went through a few bass players. I think Dalton is my favorite, but all of them played well!
@VonRyansExpress-v3r2 күн бұрын
@@aarongoff1111 I saw them at a venue in Camden in the late 80"s . . They were doing a lot of gigs then - the original drummer was still with them (not sure on the Bassist) - although with grey hair - they were so tight and beautifully together - lot to be said perhaps for hanging on to original members of the band
@aarongoff11112 күн бұрын
@@VonRyansExpress-v3r Avory stayed on well until the 1980's but then had a falling out with Dave. There was tension for many years between those two. Some folks aren't aware Avory did a stint with the Rolling Stones before they picked up Charlie Watt. I envy you seeing the Kinks live. Woulda loved seeing them perform. They're one of my favorites!

@@aarongoff1111 Wow, you know your stuff !! . . . I saw them a couple of times back then - large venue in Camden, Victorian theatre style - its long since been demolished - I think it was called the "Town and Country" club . . . You are right to envy me !! - they were as good as you imagine, one of the best back catalogues of course and they were super performances - the audiences just loved them and they us . . . Gigs to remember alright

The absolute speak of British pop music. No rules, just pure freedom and that’s why we love it to this day. I teach young kids and even their favourites are those 60s songs along with some stuff from the other golden age of music in the 90s. Peace brothers and sisters ✌🏼

What about Scott Walker’s ‘67 to ‘70 period? Scott was arguably more of an outsider because he was an immigrant. They both looked at their subject matter with empathy - both great.

So many wonderful songs and such an original, creative and talented man. A beautiful documentary which takes me way back to discovering the Kinks in my early teens and absorbing the lyrics and melodies then. Fifty years on and the music still speak to my heart.

What a beautiful little docu... Love Ray and his great tunes. That intense search to respond to the world around him on his own terms speaks to me. Many of his songs are a Remembrance of Things Past, that kind of writing is so intimate, soul baring and fixes things in time, to be revisited over and over. Lyrical story telling, inviting the listener to participate in the longing for the lost moments. Only someone who has a complex inner life with incredible depth could write like that.

I love to revisit special moments in the past, as Ray does so very well. I listened to the Kinks in their heyday, and hearing these songs again really warms my heart. There’s also so much of his music that I missed back then . I’ve got some catching up to do.

He's still the single most underrated songwriter... Not so much in Britain but certainly in America. Dave and him invented punk rock. Some may argue The Who, but they were too Mod in 64'... too clean and tidy.

Thanks for the recommendation Neil. It sounds interesting; here's a bit of blurb about it: "This subversively brilliant, one-of-a-kind rock autobiography ingeniously styled as a biography, is written by a nameless, faceless writer hired by an Orwellian entity called "the Corporation" to capture the essence of Ray Davies, lead singer and songwriter of The Kinks and one of the greatest rock and rollers of all time. The Kinks front man reveals his life and times to the young writer, often seemingly passing his stories directly into the writer's consciousness. Carnaby Street, "Top of the Pops," the Cavern Club, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who and other fixtures of the times fade in and out of this compelling narrative. Part autobiography, part social history, part psychological thriller, this elusive and daring book exposes rock stardom as the heaven, hell, and purgatory it is." Not quite your average rock memoir, by the sound of it..
