A FAK is not a trauma kit nor a medical kit nor an active shooter/ TCCC kit. It's a "boo-boo box". As a retired paramedic, what's she's outlined here is pretty comprehensive for home or car. I could add a ton of goodies but that would spill over into the more advanced kits. Many medical supplies that used to be tightly controlled by suppliers requiring a written prescription are often allowing your claim you're trained and authorized to purchase, possess and use many advanced items such as pleural decompression needles. Heck, sterile saline is controlled in the US. My advice is to get training locally, read all you can, then take advanced training. The most practical information and training I'm seeing is from The Patriot Nurse. She offers tons of free online info. and travels most of the country (not in states that do not respect the Constitution or allow concealed carry). Her classes fill quickly. They teach not only first aid but disaster preparedness and response- beans, bullets, and bandages. She teaches many practical home alternatives such as disinfecting agents, field- expedient dressings, etc. She gets into who's going to die first and why. Here are the companies I've personally dealt with an recommend: www.narescue.com/emergency-services www.rescue-essentials.com/ medicalgearoutfitters.com/ The Skinny Medic has good online training tips, too. A good bandana can come in handy, and a thing of baby wipes in case you need a quick clean up. If nothing else to wipe down the patients face to provide some comfort, it always feels good to get sweat, tears, blood, dirt wiped off the face. Also portable ice pack bags, the kind you smack and they get cool. Never as good as real ice, but help when it is hot out or swelling happening.

Triangle Bandages. As a Construction Safety Officer and First Aider, I carried these in my safety vest. For heat related illness I can dunk these in a water cooler and then place them on the persons neck to cool the blood going to the brain. They are the raw material for making a bandage, or making a tourniquet, or securing a makeshift splint. Head wounds that are hard to bandage can be done with a Triangular Bandage. I really liked this video. Thank you.

In Australia you should always have a snake bite kit. Never go anywhere without one. I think these are the large 100mm stretch bandages and you'll need at least 2 of them so that they can cover a full limb such as a leg. Knowing how Aus has such a very large number of snake breeds that can make you very ill or kill you easily, your only chance is to slow the passage of the venom by using a compression bandage and covering the whole limb from the site of the bite, up toward the heart, which will keep the poison in the limb for as long as possible before it is released under medical supervision.

Hey!! So, a few bits and pieces, as I have the potential for anaphylaxis, I carry epipens on me. I use PracMedic bags for this purpose. They have inserts on them so I’m able to carry additional rescue meds and things like my port card!! I know the Australian supplier is fantastic with this. Also, with steristrips, sometimes I find using the full length too hard so cutting in half works for me. Also! There are different types of steristrips, try them and see what you like best. I prefer smith + nephew steristrips because they last longer for me and don’t irritate my super sensitive skin. (As someone with ehlers-danlos syndrome, unless two layers of sutures needed, I only use steristips because the stitches cause me issues, that isn’t going to be the case for most people but it does show how useful steristrips can be!) Also, if you have dry eyes a lot or find you’re trying to wash out eyes a lot…. I would recommend the systane individual uses. I use the Systane Hydration UD preservative free 0.7ml x 30 per box option because it works for me, I can throw it out easily and preservative free can assist with reducing the chance of a reaction. This may not go automatically in your first aid kit and totally depends on your situation but it is a must for me. Also, I would recommend having a good first aid book on hand! As most of us are NOT doctors, we won’t know everything or may not remember. If the issue is with ourselves and we have a chronic illness we usually know that, but what about other people? So to be considered. If Dr Sam has a suggestion of which book that would be good. Just realise that things from 20 years ago may not be optimal now. Loved this like I appreciate all your information!!

I've used electrical tape (or any other that happened to be nearest) to seal fairly clean knife cuts on my fingers. If applied within a couple of seconds, before the shock wears off and the bleeding starts, it makes for a very nice heal. Remove very carefully as soon as you think the wound won't split open, and replace with airier bandaging. If applied after bleeding starts it can be done, but messier. For fingertips though, the bleeding will usually become too profuse, and it won't adhere properly.
@bobgillis11372 жыл бұрын
I am no expert, but I have taken many first aid courses and had to use the training a few times. My main peeve about 1st Aid kits in general that they rarely carry heavy bandages. The way I see it, you're not likely to use tiny bandaids in the event of a serious injury. You'd probably face a real gusher or two. I have included Tampons for that occasion. They are cheap and widely available. It beats a T-shirt in a crisis.

The two essentials I have used for years are arnica cream for bruising and pain (obviously not for use on open wounds) and Lucas Pawpaw ointment for many skin issues and lacerations inside the mouth (it is non-toxic).
@melaniebaynes2730 Жыл бұрын
Homeopathic Arnica is a must; taken immediately after injury/trauma, it reduces bruising, aids healing and treats shock. I suffer from a painful back condition (lumbar) and had a bad fall last week, took the Arnica straight away and can't believe how quickly I am recovering. Barely any visible bruising, actual internal bruising minimal, and have been able to remobilise much quicker than on previous occasions. It dealt with the shock too.

The use of a solution of Ferric Chloride and water to stop any bleeding instantaneously. Now, the solution is not going to eat your flesh as I've used it extensively in the dark continent while serving there. It was the go-to thing in emergencies, without resorting to the use of forceps. It works.. even on small cuts, etc. For anesthesia, when no lignocaine or similar is present, may I suggest adding a rubber mallet to the bag?

I think Dr. Bailey hit the nail on the head ... and I cannot stress enough myself (I´m not a doctor, always refer to your doctor for any medical advice), take some basic first aid courses to help familiarize yourself with the items in your first aid kit (the last thing you want is to have some of the best items and not know how to properly use them). You can build a decent basic first aid kit in Amerika at the dollar store if you know what you´re looking for. I´m only CPR and AED certified (so basically bottom level), so I will eventually take some courses to learn how to use the products (I can´t stress the importance enough of knowing how to properly use the items) of a trauma kit as well to store in the car.

Agreed. The Dollar Tree, now a buck twenty-five definitely has some great stuff to build a kit. Plastic boxes w/lids and handles to keep your stuff dry, bandages, antiseptics, peroxide, generic Neosporin, that works just fine, tampons, pads, they even have dog training pads that come in handy, they are like hospital blue pads that get put underneath patients. The tweezers can be cheap but would work in a pinch. They have almost everything you need to start the basic kit inexpensively.

@TomTwain2 жыл бұрын
@Carolyn Rose I would'nt worry about antiseptic liquids... most good quality essential oils (Rosemary, Clove, Lemon, German Chamomile) will have the same, or better antiseptic effect. For most part, if your nutrients are on point, there's little, or no need to worry about the healing process. Vit C is necessary for cellular repair... if you are deficient, the healing process of open wounds will be hampered.
@Kenzofeis2 жыл бұрын
Most people have no idea that blood not only flushes out dirt from wounds if you let it, but is also an excellent antiseptic in itself. Stopping a bleeding, closing a wound too soon (unless it really gushes out, of course), and washing away the blood is not always the smartest thing to do.
@jennywren89372 жыл бұрын
If I cut myself when working in the garden I suck and spit out, then run under outside cold tap. Indoors I bathe wounds with a little dilute hydrogen peroxide, or with salt water.
