Gulzar, Shankar Jaikishan & Rafi Sahab ... what a rare combo here esp. Gulzar sahab !, but definitely a deadly one for the ears. I have been listening to its audio since my school days & would never like to have a look at its video, instead would rather prefer to close my eyes in a solitude & listen to the compound magic created by its creators.
After the death of Jaikishan ji in 1971, Shankar alone gave music under the same banner ''SJ'' & this number from Seema was one of them.
There are only a few songs in hindi films which have been composed with a perfect blend of ''melancholy + romance'' in the same composition (the most difficult genre of composition) ... & this composition by SJ is definitely one among the few. The way it has been composed with sky high magnificent notes by Rafi sahab is just incredible ... its short prelude with a unique play of violins, accordion & guitar with a sweet terminal pause, is still the trademark of this composition. Use of subtle echo throughout the length of the song plus blending of the 2 voices in the mukhda is perfect & how magically Rafi Sahab scales down from sky high notes in the antras to the basal first note in the end in each antra, is as smooth & soothing as a silk cocoon. What a stress given on each word by Rafi in this song with a terrific delivery of words & the flow !!
When one feels 'blue' missing someone ... Imagination comes to the rescue : Rafi Sahaab’s rare 'blue' song tinged with romance .... I always love to listen to it with eyes closed in a solitude.
The words fall short to describe the echos when one listens to this song. Lyrics by the ''word smith - Gulzar'' are deeply so defining ... love them immensely too.
RETRO ... (1). During recording of this duet, singer Sharda was advised by Rafi Sahab to try and take a new breath during parts of her humming in the song rather than completing the humming in a single breath and that provided an amazing freshness to the song. (2). The mukhda of this song was used as such here in this song that was taken from the original Gulzar's ghazal's matla - that goes as under .....
(3). Rafi sahab lent his vocals to only a few creations of Gulzar in films & besides Seema; Mausam, Swayamwar, Devta, Biwi aur Makan, Kashish & Kaushish were the only few other films where they worked together.
