Part 2 of 1984 begins with an expansion on the freedom and rebellion that its protagonist, Winston Smith, had personified in part 1. The girl who Winston Smith had thought to be a spy for the though police turns out to be a fellow rebel.
The two become lovers, and the tiny sliver of freedom that Smith represented by buying a diary and writing 'down with Big Brother' is expanded. The hope and optimism that the two represent collectively seems to set the novel on a trajectory to overthrow the suffocating and dark backdrop of their society. It all ends with a crash however when their love-nest is invaded by the Thought Police and the potentially comic outcome of the novel turns sharply towards the tragic that seemed inevitable from the novel's outset.

Great commentary as always, When he imagines bludgeoning Julia, I don't believe it is out of party loyalty but sexual repression. The passage before outlines how he cant help but find her attractive, and cannot have her. Also, the idea of him being immoral seems a little off, and perhaps you will get to this. Winston desires Truth above all, I'm not sure there is anything more moral than this, even in a world where everything is upside down.. A truly wonderful book. Second only to The New Testament for me... Always enjoy your lectures, thank you for not keeping them private despite auto-didacts like myself 'chipping in' all the time!! Great to hear your admiration and continued referencing of The Book of Collosians by the way. There is a beautiful speech by Arthur Holmes on you tube called 'The Treasures of Wisdom and Knowledge' regarding this. I simply cannot recommend it enough.

The book suggests he considers bludgeoning her because he fears her. No sense of sexual repression. Again, Orwell himself, suggests that Winston's attraction to her was largely in the way immorality defied Big Brother.

@@LitProf Thank you for taking the time to reply, and yes, having re read a little this evening, I can understand what you mean by rebellious motivations and not purely sexual. Thanks again.

According to some of my sources and wikipedia. "The Stasi had 90,000 full-time employees who were assisted by 170,000 full-time unofficial collaborators (Inoffizielle Mitarbeiter); together these made up 1 in 63 (nearly 2%) of the entire East German population" Germans fear of being spied on, had grounds. This was one if not the one most invigilated society behind iron curtain, especially knowing germans natural aptitude to efficiency.
