J R R Tolkien, The Monsters and the Critics

Tolkien's lecture on Beowulf, The Monsters and the Critics, is a watershed mark in studies in Anglo Saxon. Tolkien rounds on the critics of the poem who dismiss its literary merits.
Of greater interest here is the way in which Tolkien seems to emulate some of the features he talks about in relation to Beowulf in The Lord of the Rings.

Thanks very much. You taught me a great deal, and I now have a hint into two mysteries. When the Ring movies were making their way, the cast and crew of those movies, in their talk show appearances, roundly played down the inference to Christianity, supposedly a part of the novels; probably, to shield themselves and the movies from the wrath of public scorn (and, of course, the learned are above that nonsense) . And, Tolkien's reported response to the Aslan books: "You made it too plain (or obvious)...I can't find the quote so maybe I'm wrong...but I remember reading something like that somewhere.

There is a letter by Tolkien in which he is critical of GK Chesterton (whom he generally admires) for 'not understanding the North'.

The stewards of Gondor are the priestly caste of LotR if you use the Spengler idea, people who no longer indulge in conquest and the future but in tradition scripture and ancestor worship.
