That is one very nice engine Ade 👍👍👍 With my smaller Chinese hit & miss engines I have found that when starting from cold a good tactic is, before turning on the ignition, block the carburettor's air intake and turn the engine over a few times by hand. This definitely aids starting. Cheers, Alan.

I worked on full size Ajax and Continental engines in the 20th century. They were all over the oil fields of south Arkansas but there’s not a lot of them left. A friend of mine traded one for a cherry model A coupe in the late 70s. I’ve been trying to buy a small holt H75. I finally found one I could afford to buy. It’s on the way but needs a little work from some fan and radiator damage. With the deal I got I don’t mind doing a little extra work on it. I can hardly wait on it to arrive. Big plans I have,!😂😂😂. I will have a good time fooling around with it anyhow.

I agree Ade, that's a beautiful engine. Must have been great fun putting it together. Would be a lot of work to make one yourself. Thanks for sharing. Cheers Nobby

Having just built one of these and watching your video I noticed a couple of things. One is that it vibrated quite a bit, then I noticed that your flywheel timing is off. When the piston is a top dead center the counter weights on the flywheels should be away from the top of the engine. The piston is 180 degrees from weights. The other thing I noticed is that your valve clearance is way too much. There is a gauge provided in the kit and you adjust the valve clearance at the push rod and rocker arm contact. There is also another video by another assembler that shows how the wiring is routed so that it is neat, but requires some removal of material from the base. I had fun building it, but the hardest part is putting the three ball bearings on the shaft and then sliding the collar over it. The next is getting the clearance correct on that collar. You think it is correct, but when you tighten the flywheel down it changes the clearance. When you build one you will see what I mean. Cheers.

i wonder why i got a different crankshaft design than everyone else...mine is circular, not flat like everyone elses is, just recieved and built mine yesterday, i added a tiny generator to mine! i ended up snapping the contact to my points off...nothing a bit of superglue couldnt fix! engine is running great, rotates super smooth!

Looks like the head is leaking a bit. If I could suggest Permatex copper gasket maker in an aerosol, it works great for sealing and applying evenly.

I got my own new HM-01 engine 2 weeks ago. The assembly itself went ok, however I think the valve head 25 x 1.5 mm O-ring is no good, The compression was good at first but upon my first starting attempt it lost all compression after the 3rd pull. when I removed the head, the O-ring appeared to just barely rise above the head surface less than 1/4th of a mm. Im sure there little to no O-ring pressure against the head and cylinder end since it already touches metal with only 1/2 turn on the 6 Allen wrench head screws. So now the engine is stored away, waiting for a new dozen set of high temp O-rings from uncle Amazon. I might try using hi-temp silicone Gasket maker if all else fails.

The whole kit is lovely. I'm actually considering buying on. Seeing your video and the price from one of the dealers I feel like it's a decent value for the money. Besides, I've got way too many projects on the list for my shop to get around to something like this in any reasonable number of years.... As for your starting troubles I was yelling "THERE'S NO CURRENT FLOWING ! ! ! " at the monitor. But I guess you couldn't hear me due to the distance..... Even if the current only flows in short pulses I would expect the current display on your supply to show at least a few blips and dithers. So no spark for sure. But it looks like it might be the spark control box. Nice to see the funny intro back. Or is it a new one? I'll have to go find the old one to check. But it's a grin and a half to see your video start like that.

Hi Bruce, I know, I felt like a right twit! I think I could just hear you distantly ;) at least I wont make that mistake again. I'm trying to come up with scenarios for the intro based on the 'welcome to the shed' theme. Thanks for your comments. Ade

As a kid in the 1970's I hiked a trail on Tzartus island west coast Canada where an old copper mine operated from 1920's to 40's where many dozens of old rusty discarded hit and miss engine parts littered the trailside looking very similar to the much smaller HM01 parts

My valve stem is rubbing and getting stuck in the holder, is it better to bore out the hole larger or use sandpaper to make the stem thinner?

run a drill or reamer through the cast boss, it's probably just some excess paint in the bushing

14:20 It is not 304 stainless, which is non magnetic, someone is telling porkies. I can send you some certified samples if you like. I've worked with that crap for decades., it's only good enough for starships... 🤣 Another internet mystery to be solved 🤣

It is 304 stainless which can be slightly magnetic depending on the type of 304. Not all 304 is the same. When he applied the magnet it showed to be slightly magnetic.
