What is a Pier Abutment?

What is a pier abutment and how it poses challenge for dentists?
Pier abutment is an intermediate abutment located between two terminal abutments.
If a Rigid FPD is given in such cases, the pier abutment acts as a fulcrum and thus transmits forces to the terminal abutments. This causes loosening/failure of prosthesis.
