Incidentally, the only SSD I've never seen Druaga1 use is a DOM (disc on module). They are usually used in CNC machines and last for years as they are designed mainly to work with DOS. A DOM would probably make this PC more ultimate.
@raven4k998
@raven4k998 3 жыл бұрын
would it would it really hmm a sata ssd would work just as well
@StevenSmyth
@StevenSmyth 3 жыл бұрын
@@raven4k998 A DOM plugs directly into the motherboards IDE port. The thing about SATA to IDE converters is they don’t increase the speed of the IDE bus. If your bus is 33 MBs the SSD will bury that; in other words you’ll get max I/O speeds all the time but only as fast as the bus will allow. DOMS also come in more reasonable sizes, two to four GB. Since DOS only supports FAT16 with a 2 GB upper limit, you won’t have as much wasted space. Besides, they’re period appropriate.
@raven4k998

Minimum system requirements for Windows 3.1: 100% IBM compatible computer. 80386 or higher processor aka a “386” system. 2MB or better RAM. 8MB Hard disk drive space. 3.5 inch or 5.25 inch floppy disc drive. VGA video. Keyboard and Mouse. DOS 3.1 or higher. If it were me (and it’s not) I’d add: 8-16 MB of RAM, if it can take it A Backpack external CD-ROM drive. LGR did a video on one several months back. They are easy to come by on eBay. A VESA video card. Some games pre-Pentium require it.

Steven Smyth Windows 3.1 will run on a 286 with 1MB of RAM...you just won't have the 386 Enhanced Mode options like Virtual Memory. My first Windows 3.1 machine was a CompuAdd 212 with the following specs: AMD 286 @ 12 MHz 1MB 30-pin SIMM (4 x 256KB) Seagate 40MB IDE hard drive dual 1.44MB Floppy Drives CGA Video Card with Composite Video output (which had to run in monochrome mode due to the lack of CGA support by Windows) I later added a no-name Sound Blaster 8-bit compatible sound card. For what it was the system worked pretty good.

druaga is using windows for workgroups 3.11 which will not run on a 286 as it dropped standard mode support
@StevenSmyth
@StevenSmyth 6 жыл бұрын
Understood. He kept saying that he was leery of it running in 3 MB of RAM. The specs I gave are for 3.1, 3.11 can run in 3MB of RAM. Thanks for the clarification. I used to run Windows 3.1 on a 386SX 16 with 2MB and it ran slowly, but it ran.

You could have avoided the whole .ini editing stuff for the video card by running SETUP from the WIN311 directory and choosing the video card from there.

You should do something with that old Pentium II Dell that you put the Quantum Bigfoot in. Maybe use that for the Ultimate DOS Machine? It's older than the PIII you were using before. Or get yourself a nice Socket 7 board with a Pentium 1/MMX, those are really good for DOS.

If you have vlb slots : get a vlb card with 1MB to get 1024*768 resolution and more speed, get some more ram and get a 486DX2-66MHz (or a DX4 100mhz overdrive if you manage to find one), that should speed it up !

Holy balls. That board has a controller which can coordinate that many 16x ISA slots? (I know several devices may be running at 8x, but 7 slots still seems excessive to me)
@StevenSmyth
@StevenSmyth 6 жыл бұрын
MonsterWithConscience Not 16x 16 bit. It’s the data width of the bus, not the speed. It refers to how much RAM can be addressed by the card in the slot.
@foureye7058
@foureye7058 6 жыл бұрын
I'm aware. I thought it was only possible for at most 5 devices to use a 16x IRQ. I should clarify, I learned the simple stuff in the mid 2000's when ISA was already halfway out the door. My use of distorted nomenclature being the side-effect.

Its already maxxed out on megs? because that could be the first thing to do to "expand" it more, maybe adding like 8 megs? or 16? the video its fine but yeah, it doesnt look like DVD quality not even CD, now i know its kinda stupid to expect DVD quality in a old dectalk motherboard but hey at least there has to be a way to make it "watchable" But its ok, at least now boots up and its working OK and with no SD Card thing going on, the only other thing aside the drive arragment its the boot floppy drive thing but like i said at least works and boots up fine, so that's neat!
