I think they cloned Microsoft just a little bit too close. This is like trying to get the first beta release of NT5 working. Makes life interesting knowing that any moment the OS will just lose its marbles. You got farther than I did with ReactOS. I never got either .37 or .40 to work, using a PII and a Pentium Pro. Figured it might need a more modern computer to run, and didn't feel like messing with it. .37 would just bsd during cd installer, and .40 just hung at a black screen during installer boot. Anyway this was interesting.

The long videos are interesting because you get to see just how frustrating some of the hacky things you do can be if they go wrong. It's a good thing, and fun to watch. I think when you start mixing up things that were not designed to go together, or experimenting with alpha software... well, it's inevitable things will go wrong. That being said, a little bit more critical editing could probably have shaved 30 minutes off this video. I've seen people doing what you're doing that have way more subscribers and the only difference is with their presentation and editing. I don't think anyone who watches you now would want you to become some slick, scripted robot. I personally don't mind, but if you're not happy with your results, try something different.

+COOLZ one of the selling points is that it isn't Linux... WineMine is part of Wine, which is indeed a Windows emulator for Linux, however last I checked it wasn't built into Linux, you had to download it separately, and Wine runes excruciatingly slow on everything.

WineMine is a Windows application. ROS uses the parts of Wine that natively runs on Windows and the parts that can be modified to work in Windows using real Windows kernel functions. The biggest parts that still need work is ROS' win32 kernel and the low-level platform drivers. I imagine HAL in particular needs a lot of work.

Fun Fact: The little "Low space" stop sign turns red when the disk space progress bar is empty. Believe me, I experienced this with a 4GB hard drive that USED to run Windows 98, but now runs Windows ME. It literally has 150MB of free space left.

for having used it for years back in the day, Windows ME was quite the stable beast, actually. If you cared to do updates, of course... Its only wierdness was being a hybrid between Windows 9x and Windows NT families.

It had none of the advantages of NT and all of the disadvantages of 9x... not only that but they removed a lot of the DOS compatibility. I had ME and rolled back to 98SE which was much more stable. ME acted up with USB, with parallel ports, with sound cards and with Voodoo cards (which at the time were one of the most popular gaming cards). It was awful.

I also had both 98 SE and ME, and none of your problems. Of course it's no NT since it's, like the 9x series, a home-intended windows. You'll have to wait for XP to merge the 2. The fact that it is a windows OS and not just a windows desktop and display manager for DOS, like 9x and earlier had been, also improves ME's performance from what i've seen. The downside, is, it is true, that you'll get trouble at first running true DOS programs in DOS 7.1, since DOS 7.1 is no longer the OS but just a console prompt. But that has been fixed for most cases through the patches. At the end of its supported life, a fully patched and updated ME was indeed stable like a beast. Never had any problems with any peripherals or hardware with it, and i've had a bigger BSoD/year ratio on XP than on ME (and i say that despite me thinking XP is actually the best windows version ever when taken at its prime time). You're not the first one i see complaining about ME problems, Zoolookuk, but my guess is that either you did not update it enough back in the day, or you tried it again more recently in which case good luck for finding those updates. I tried myself a Windows ME Virtual Machine and installing a special free graphics driver in order not to be limited in graphic resolution and colors, but that's about all i was able to do with it.

That part, to this day, remains a mystery to me. As i kept using ME for several years after the release of XP and it still had updates, including critical ones from time to time. As a result, if i had not seen for myself the dates a few months before we started this conversation, i don't think i would have believed you about the shortened release cycle. My guess is the fuss about ME at the time was the same as the fuss about 8.0 decades later. Not the same reasons of course, but the same fuss and same result. So, even if technically ME was salvageable simply by updating, too many people had already made up their mind and the marketing side of the OS could not be salvaged. That's my best guess...

The thing with the 16-bit installers actually has a workaround. There's a section on ToastyTech called "32-bit Setup Files" (it's under "Files and Downloads"). Just copy the contents of the CD to a writable directory, copy the correct installer into the same directory, and run the installer you downloaded. Works on Windows too, but the section specifically says "These files are mainly to aid in the installation of software with 16-bit launchers under ReactOS."

ReactOS BSOD: I think that the BSOD is caused by the driver KBDCLASS.SYS. If you select the video speed in the KZbin Player, you can see that this driver is the last that the OS loads. Driver Directory: multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\ReactOS\System32\Drivers\KBDCLASS.SYS

It does. I used to have a computer with two drives. Even though my brother told us not to put it on the C drive, we did it anyway. Some installations later, the low icon would light up red on every installation and we would get an error message.

16:43 INT3 is Interupt 3, that error is because it ran a piece of code that shouldn't run ever, it's probably a bug somewhere in the usb driver

That BSOD in the start is that the hard drive is set to SATA. Set the hard drive to IDE and It will work, I spent a week trying to figure out why my XP wouldn't load because of that error
