this is so relatable also thank you for talking about the “situation” with ava, there actually isn’t really a situation but people are making it one. it genuinely upsets me when people vilify ava for demonise her for literally nothing, like when she gives fatou advice that maybe Kieu My isn’t the best person for her and everyone started saying they hate her. like for what? what did she do wrong? voice her feelings of trauma from being bullied by that friend group to the point she had to move? or when she thought Kieu My was sending fatou mixed signals because she hasn’t seen very interaction and stare we have? how does any of this make her a bad person or a “toxic friend”, it doesn’t. sorry for my rant

no need to apologise! honestly, saying ava is toxic is so so bad. ava is a complex character that went through so much and to demonise her at every action is very sus to me. most people don’t have valid reasons for it. i just like that the show brought up that mailin will always be speaking from a place of privilege in some topics.

@@anapinto but that is a thing that makes me mad sometimes. The people who say that Mailin can't or won't understand Ava ever because she has this privileges Ava doesn't have. Yeah but...she's born with it. It's not that someone asked her if she wanna be born white or black. And often in comments it sounds like Mailin is not even allowed to state her opinion, because she can not feel what Ava feel because of their different skin colour (sorry for the description, I'm not a native speaker and just now struggling to find the right words). For me that would mean that no one is allowed to show his interest for a minority or to demonstrate for them or whatelse...but I think that's the wrong approach. That would only create more separation, because every minority would only stay in their own group, in their own bubble. And that can't be the goal, in my opinion.

Hmm I don't know if Ava is disliked because of her skincolor. I mean I'm sure some do and not even consciously but because they have deep integrated stereotypes in their mindsets but I think for myself Ava is hard to like because of her personality or what she wants us to believe her personality is. She is a very black and white thinker which I assume comes from trust issues she built up after gettng bullied which makes total sense but is still hard to understand sometimes. She has her mind made up and tries to be a very strong person but by that she pushes people away. If you can't accept others people's reality or can't make room for their opinions it is hard to be your friend. I think it bothers me so much cause I once was like Ava. I have commented on another reaction of yours that I got bullied too and it did make me distrust other people even my friends. For a long time I didn't wanna be seen so I kept quiet which means that after I overcame the bullying I got a bit "fake" confident and had to say something about every issue or topic that was discussed. Meaning my mind was made up and you won't change that doesn't matter how good your arguments are. It was a compensation for how quiet I was before but it wasn't really me. It was a front that tried to block everyone away so that I wouldn't get hurt again. And that was fine but you have to evolve past that because in the long run that makes your friends turn away from you. And I dislike Ava because that is exactly what she is doing. And I understand her totally but I still dislike her.

yea that's totally valid. there's a bit of both. some people dislike her because of how strong her personality is (which is totally valid, i myself felt confused with her at some points), and others do because of the inner biases they have against black people and that can be denied. some people don't even realize. at the end of the day, she is still a girl who got bullied and now has to see her bullies resurfacing in her life without them having acknowledged the harm they've done to her (constantin even had the audacity to say i don't wanna see pereira lol). the fandom itself has a tendency to treat men better than they do the women, and the white men especially better than they treat anyone else. ava is very strong, opinionated, and like you said very stuck on her own morals. i like her and i can admit that her black and white thinking will create friction between her and the rest of the girls (it already has and she was capable of apologizing). the issue with me lies with those that keep hating on her, but want a redemption for constantin and ismail more than life itself.

@@anapinto Believe me I don't want a redemption arc for Constantin hahaha. He's a total dick and he hasn't changed. With Ismail I feel like they are setting up a redemption arc already but I don't know how that is supposed to work. My sister and I think that they might make Ismail the next main and if we are right that's gonna be tough. Lots of straight white girls watch Druck (at least in Germany) so it doesn't suprise me that they forgive "hot white men" faster than anyone else. Maybe it's cause I'm queer but I always try to hype up our girls instead of the boys. Unless that boy is Josh cause I love him haha. I feel like if I would have to tolerate my bullies in my life again I might show no emotion around them. I would try to show no weakness. So kind of like Ava actually. Damn this is so conflicting. I just wish Ava could be a bit more forgiving with her friends. Like with Nora she quite quickly didn't accept any other reality than the fact that Nora doesn't wanna do the project and doesn't wanna be their friend. And Nora fucked up a lot but how can you not see that there are other reasons to why Nora is behaving like she is? And I think that's where the trust issues come in again. If you've been let down like Ava has before it's hard to come up with other reasons as to why someone doesn't wanna hang out with you. Especially since Nora is Zoe's sister. But I need her to do that. I need Ava to evolve as a character so that she can accept other opinions than her own. I just hope that's her plotline for this season.

Ava actually got a lot of "hate" (hate is not the right word here cause this is a fictional character that just did something that wasn't well liked but idk what else to call it) for saying what she said to Mailin. Not really about what she said cause that's completely true but about saying it in that moment. And honestly I do agree with those comments. Maybe I don't get it because like Mailin I am white but I just don't understand why she would have to respond like that to a joke. It's not like Mailin actually suggested to break into the teachers house. Like what exactly is Ava adressing here? Idk it felt out of context for me and that doesn't even need to be about Ava or the topic itself but maybe it was the writing?

this might be one of those instances where maybe because i’m not native to the language, i might have missed something. but to me ava didn’t exactly sound rude?? like she did say it as joke but one of those jokes that has an underlying element of truth to it. however, because it went against what mailin said a bit, it felt like an attack. no single person in the universe likes feeling like they are wrong or being called out so the first instinct might be to get defensive. since season 5, ava gets “hated” for every action she takes and even tho not all of that hate is rooted in racism, some of it is. because i’ve seen the same people who hate on her defend constantin and ismail 💀 so yea like maybe it got lost in translation for me but i think it’s important that the show is addressing how a black girl and a white girl are not in the same place when it comes to doing something wrong, because the black girls often is more scrutinised. thank you for your comment ✨

I just watched the Clip again and Ava does smile when she says it so maybe she is kind of joking but to me it still doesn't sound like a joke with meaning but more like a "friendly comeback". She's not rude at all btw it's just the moment seems so out of context to me so it comes of that way. And yeah for a crime she would totally be punished more than Mailin would be, but actually noone would get punished at all cause Mailin is joking. That's why I questioned the writing or maybe the direction even. If Mailin had been serious I would have totally gotten Ava's response but she's not so why respond like that? But on the other hand maybe I am Mailin and that's why it bothers me. Maybe most people that watch Druck are white girls that think they are super woke (the biggest demograpic are definitely white girls) like Mailin but actually we aren't aware of everything and that's why the fandom hates on Ava so quickly cause we don't understand our own biases and privledge (even though I hope I do my best to understand). Idk I can sort of see both as factors. Me being defensive but also the context is weird.

But without that awkward moment we wouldn't have had a little of Mailin's pov either. Anyways, I do wish Ava can overcome her trauma and becomes a little more flexible, as for Mailin to be more intentional at building a stronger friendship with Ava and such because I still think we don't know much about her.
