What you are describing in Toronto is 100x worse in London, UK: ULEZ, congestion charge, traffic filters, low traffic neighbourhoods, 5 minute cities, fines for drifting into a bus lane, random roads have random times you're not allowed to drive on (instant fine), 20mph speed limit in ALL of central London, etc, etc, etc - London is undrivable and public transport is unusable outside of zone 3 (I'm in zone 6). It's the total destruction of freedom of movement. I'm so disillusioned by this and other "green" policies that have bankrupted the country, I'm moving to Australia. Our energy now is 35p/kWh, in Ukraine it is 3p and we aren't reliant on Russian gas - it's the religious obsession with being "green".

It's not religious, just very practical. A denser city structure allows for better public transport systems to he designed and makes the city more walkable and bikeable, which provide major public health benefits. A car-centric city just sprawls way too wide, and is only good for car-users. A denser city structure is good for walkers, runners, bikers, metro systems and public bus systems. Yet those should be ignored just so that you can roll up to the city in a huge ass car that takes up tons of space from everyone. Nowhere has movement been easier and faster than massive Asian or European cities where public transport works well thanks to a denser city structure and putting focus into proper bike lanes etc. Use the bike or car to connect to the public transport system and then use that to access the city. Way faster than having all the cars roll up into the dense city centre.

@@Paakku97 They are doing this in zone 6 where it's just a couple of deers and some fields and terrible public transport infrastructure. They will charge me £12 per day ($15) every time I get in my car with no alternatives. If I do happen to drive and I turn on the wrong street at the wrong time of day, that's an extra £150 ($190) fine. It is religious.

@@DigiDriftZone having a dense urban area that is also car friendly was an impossible idea from the start. Obviously what you are saying doesn't sound right and may be a blind spot from the policy makers. But the general idea of congestion charges and dedicated bus lanes definitely has many positive sides too, it's not just there to oppress car drivers out of spite or something.
@DigiDriftZone
@DigiDriftZone 11 ай бұрын
@@Paakku97 Yes, in zone 1. Again, this is rural areas I am talking about where there was no problem to solve, that's what most of us are objecting to - again, I'm in zone 6 and this is what is happening right now in ALL rural areas within 25 miles or so of central London. Congestion charge came into effect in 2003, most agree it was a good idea (even at the time), in densely populated areas that require it. It's the religious zealotry of what they are doing now. They say 15 minute cities so you think great, they'll build better public transport infrastructure and add more convenient shops and parks. I was a big believer! - But no, they added a bunch of cameras, replaced main roads with unused bicycle lanes, close roads at random times of the day with bollards, low traffic neighbourhoods and traffic filters (in areas that already have barely any traffic!) etc, etc - they even removed a bus route so public transport is even worse than it was! - how are citizens meant to see it as anything but restrictions on movement? Maybe not out of spite for the driver, but rather for the middle income and lower population? - They really believe driving a car should be reserved to the ultra wealthy as you can still drive one, but it's unaffordable for most. Again, with no practical alternatives, a 30 minute drive to visit family takes over 2.5 hours by public transport with long stretches of walking, and there are often delays and cancellations.

I lived and worked in Toronto years ago. Unfortunately, I lost years to complete dependence on oxycontin and almost lost my life during the darkest years. I quit after my brush with the law. Methadone helped, and I tapered off it completely. Now I have a job, wife, son, and a life (thanks to my family and gaining knowledge from your books and online content). This opioid problem in our country IS here. People need safer sources for the chemical(s) they become dependant on and support if they're addicted. I'd love to share other ideas if either is interested. Dr. Peterson- THANK- YOU! 5ish years ago, 12 Rules gave me the confidence in myself and the push to completely taper off the methadone train. Thanks for helping me put my life back together. Mike.

I think you've highlighted an important point...We should be looking to those who have overcome substance use for direction on how to be of help in the matter. I've been surrounded by addiction my whole life and have fallen into it myself at times. And when you get to know so many who struggle with this illness, it becomes clear that addiction is born out of unhealed trauma wounds and the role that has on the human body, mind, and spirit. Most addicts I've known that get completely lost in their addiction and wind up on the street do so because of a lack of human resources. They don't have a community of supportive, loving people around them, and they lack a sense of purpose and belonging. So, how do we build a loving community around those who are so lost? Wouldn't it be great if we could create villages of people who have overcome addiction to help others who are still in active addiction? Places where someone could learn skills to build confidence and prepare them for contributing to the community in a healthy way once they are on their feet. It could be a place where life skills are taught, along with having many resources for mental health to teach about how trauma effects the mind and body so that one can learn new coping mechanisms while being surrounded by people who care and are encouraging. These people on the streets are human beings with real gifts and talents to offer the world locked up inside them and hidden by the cycle of addiction. We need to fight for their healing. They are mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, and children. The best outcome is to see them healed and helping others to heal. Funding for several different programs could be obtained from the very wealthy pharma companies that helped to create the crisis. They should not be profiting from sickness, and therefore should be the main contributor of helping to bring the balance back.

Thank you, Dr. Peterson, for inviting Anthony. I have lived in Yonge/Eglinton area - on Eglinton West for 8 years and then on Eglinton East since 2020. As the LRT construction progressed from west to east, I had to put up with it in the past 10 years - big mess on major intersections, long-gone small businesses, not to mention the various detours pedestrians had to make in the neighborhoods. It is inconceivable... I appreciate that you mentioned city bikes in Toronto. I don't think the cycling activists represent the majority of people who bike in Toronto. I have a BikeShare membership and very much enjoy the services. There are obvious reasons to bike to work, but it has NOTHING to do with saving the planet. We bike because TTC sucks - it is inefficient and unpleasant. Biking ensures that I get to places on time. TTC does not. Biking prevents the harassment from the homeless that one often experiences on a train or bus. TTC does not.

Ok but how do you think they should go about doing that? One thing i know for sure is that arresting and charging/imprisoning addicts doesnt reduce addiction at all. Addicts dont respond to finger wagging, nor do they respond (as in decide to quit) due to consequences, addicts are in active addiction due to a lack of human connections and by branding them via criminal record will further cause them to retreat from people and towards the substitute for human connections which are... DRUGS. Also, were there's a demand dealers will always pop up to meet that lucrative demand (again, consequences have 0 effect of dealer or addict. The only solution that's actually proven to work (here in the us weve long lost the "war on drugs") is to go to a widespread treatment model. Punishment clearly has failed so ridiculously miserably that its almost hilarious if not for all the lives lost and ruined.

Jordan Peterson applauded not very long ago. And it's the only purpose that the bike lanes really need to serve -- so let them serve it.

I watched a recent Hamilton City Hall meeting where a woman talked endlessly about the 'language' in a current motion to address the 'encampments' (a word she had a problem with) that are populated by 'the homeless' (another issue). She claimed that it created an oppositional relationship between 'homeowners' (another problem word) and 'unhoused' (a word she preferred). In essence, she had an issue with an accurate description of the problem. 'Inclusivity', to her, is putting non-productive people that are creating an unsafe environment in these parks for everyone, on the same footing as productive people that live in those neighbourhoods, pay taxes to maintain those Parks, and expect to be able to use them. It's pathetic, in the truest meaning of the word.

100% agree on the cycling activism, and both my wife and I are big into utility cycling. The key here, as Jordan and Anthony point out, is to put in cycling infrastructure _where it makes sense to do so_ and to not use it as a back door to smuggle in an anti-car agenda. I live in Las Vegas and their ridiculous program here is to paint in bike lanes on major roads throughout the city, as if a little paint will make cycling on a 6 lane major road with cars zooning by at 50+ mph safe or practical, not to mention the intense sun here degrades the paint within 6 months to be practically invisible. Even with the surge in e-bike use here in Vegas, which opens up cycling as a practical means to do short trips with, major roads should be left for automobiles exclusively, with cycling infrastructure relegated to specific bike trails and side streets.

We have similar problems in Australia. Cyclists in lycra will sometimes ride abreast in groups of twenty slowing highway traffic to a snail pace. They are so arrogant, and look down their nose at drivers, not caring what havoc they cause. We call them cockroaches on wheels.

Cycling, PEVs, and other personal transport is personal transport. In the podcast it's nearly directly said that cars are the only acceptable form of personal transport, but that's just untrue. Also it is worth asking what benefit cars do better than everything else given that you could remake the city from scratch. I personally have yet to find barely anything at all that cars do better than everything else. Even for the people would find them fun, having local tracks where you rent a car and drive it there for fun would result in those people having more fun.

@@Dogo.R All well and good if you are young, single, and fit. How will the elderly access healthcare on a bicycle? How will a parent of four children access education and healthcare? Nor do we all live in cities with public transport. Here in Australia I have lived in cities with one bus an hour, with limited stops, over a ten hour period. If you need public transport at 10pm, sorry there is none until 7am. So imagine living slightly more rurally. Perhaps 45 minutes drive on a good highway, driving at 100 kms an hour, from the closest hospital. In many cities this is also true to get from the outer suburbs where people live. And you break your leg, or your appendix bursts. Historically we know before the highway was built and cars were invented this journey took 3 - 14 days, depending on the tides, the weather, availability of boats, horse changes etc. These are things that don't just happen to the elderly, parents or children, they happen to bicycle riders too. I'm sure my country is not alone with having not enough housing and infrastructure for the people already living in the city. Bulldozing them and beginning again to cater cyclists would cause immense human suffering to service a small elite. Yours is the best example I've seen of a luxury belief in a long while.

Why should the car owner be pandered to when a massive portion of people in many cities prefer to use bikes if the city layout just allows for it? Cars take up something like 4x more space and are much more dangerous as they are so heavy. Also with bikes traffic flows much better, less traffic lights are needed in purely biking areas. Look at some major European cities for examples

I am homeless because I am disabled and live in Ontario, where the price of rent is too steep for me to be able to afford a place. I have a hard enough time managing my diabetes on the allowance I get through ODSP for taking care of myself, I can't afford to put that into renting a place instead of buying groceries. There are many people that are similar to me that are homeless now due to COVID and inflation. Not all of us are transient addicts who are going around messing up public green spaces. Valid points indeed!!! Also, speaking as an American visiting Toronto, I strongly recommend to make the entire Gardiner Expressway UNDERGROUND similar to Boston!!! With careful planning, underground would be a beautiful investment for Ontario and Canada at large for this world class city of Toronto and metro GTA. Limited access entrances/exits for several reasons would pay massive dividends to speed up vital downtown traffic arteries, create a massive amount of freed up lakefront land to make beautiful parkway, residential and commercial development which would pay millions of dollars of added taxation. Also, make a serious expansion of quality subways on the level of New York City of extremely high quality for Ontario transportation of honest mass transit that would work well with careful planning. Bike lanes would never solve one damn thing and Toronto should force all bicyclists to have a bike license to be actually safe and responsible to all municipal vehicular traffic.

If a person knows they can make more money by moving to a city but mist put their life at risk the benefit doesn't outweigh the reward the same goes with not wanting to lose economies of scale and efficiency but if you destroy the efficiency, there goes reasons to stay as well.

There next step is 15 minute city zones, where movements are restricted to how far you can walk in 15 minutes. The goal is to prevent protests when people discover the reality of net zero. These city zones (sometimes called Smart Cities) are already being trialed in Australia and Britain.

By building car centric cities you basically force all the bikers and walkers by making it intolerable because of the sprawl. Also public transportation is very difficult and inefficient to build in car-centric and sorawling cities. So it goes the other way too.

@@grannyannie2948 a dense city structure has many benefits and I definitely would choose living in a dense urban areas like Berlin or Amsterdam that has plenty of parks and green areas and isn't super loud with all the cars (which make the most constant noise in the city). Much better than some sprawling American or Middle-East city that is only good for car users and barely even has pedestrian paths. Those conspiracy videos are very surface level and fear-mongering. I wonder who has interest to fear monger about reducing oil and car dependence? Hmmmm 🤔

Same things happened in Denver. Homelessness is up 400% crime 150% pollution and traffic is out of control downtown because half the lanes are now bike lanes

I am a retired police officer and I agree with you that on all levels Law Enforcement needs changed. Law Enforcement (in the US) has no support system. As I watch events unfold I see a lack of training and a lack of stress management unfolding. It will take a lot to correct this issue. With all of that being sad what communities are now having to hire from is not necessarily the best pool of candidates because...lets be honest who would want that job now. Love the topic and insight of this podcast. If you want a better community you have to build it and that starts with the people.

To me, cities are doomed. I plan on taking back my connection to nature and our ancestors, by moving to the countryside as soon as posible.

The problem is more extensive than just the abandonment of the broken windows policies. It isn't just that they are allowing the classic broken windows issues to go unhandled. That is, things like turnstile jumping and graffiti, etc. No, it is much worse. They are actually asserting that not only should "minor" crimes historically in the broken windows category not be prosecuted, but that the category itself should be greatly expanded to include more serious things that were never in that broken windows group to begin with. Someone shoplifted "only" $800 worth of items? Well that should now be included in the broken windows category, minor nothings that should be completely sidestepped by the administration and not prosecuted in any way. All they did was assault a police officer? Well who cares about that? Assault of a police officer is now in the broken windows category to be completely ignored. The category is growing alarmingly, and including things that any sane person should recognize as something that is not at all a "minor nuisance crime"
