Symptomatic treatment of a cough
Productive cough
----------------------------
Drugs to decrease the viscosity of mucus and enhance mucociliary clearance (no cough suppression)
Expectorants (e.g., guaifenesin)
Loosen mucus by increasing the fluid content of bronchial secretions via an unknown mechanism
Should be taken with sufficient amount of water for the best effect
Mucolytics (e.g., N-acetylcysteine)
Decrease the viscosity of mucus by disrupting disulfide bonds of mucus glycoproteins
Used in patients with viscous mucus in chronic bronchopulmonary diseases (e.g., cystic fibrosis, COPD)
Also used as an antidote in acetaminophen poisoning
Chest physiotherapy
Chest percussion/vibration may be used with postural drainage to mobilize and enhance the clearance of mucus from the airway.
Indicated in patients with thick mucus and/or ineffective cough (e.g., cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, pneumonia)
Non-productive cough: cough suppressants (antitussive medications)

Sir u said that dextromethorphan stimulates NMDA receptor..isn't it wrong..I mean dextromethorphan actually blocks NMDA receptor..moreover u said that we can combine dextromethorphan with codeine but from mcqs I solved ,it mentionrd that the combination of codeine with dextromethorphan is irrational as both are centrally acting ,thus there is no advantage of adding them

Thank you for your explanation. I do have a non-stop and non-deep coughing triggered only when the temperature drops below 65F often when I am sitting. It often starts with non-deep tickling feeling (just where the trachea splits) leading to the compelling desire to cough. It's often a short cough but at times it goes on and on with intermittent pauses. It stops when I move around and do some physical work. I am based in Belgium and would really appreciate if you PROMPTLY recommend any simple relief medication. Thanks, Paul
