This song, and In Bloom, have organically become the first two songs I'm learning on drums, and man, it's so difficult! I thought having heard both of these songs a million times over the past 30 years would help a little, but when you can't yet get your four limbs to operate independently... Tough! I'm working on it! Playing each part very slowly and increasing my speed when it's comfortable has given me the most success so far.

Hey man, sounds like you're doing great! They're certainly not songs I'd suggest starting with but more power to you! A couple of tips: Teen Spirit - if you're having trouble with the kick double in the chorus, take out the kick drum on '3+' (the first of the double), until you've got the technique down. It'll still sound great but significantly easier to play. Both songs: rather than spend ages on one section, set a timer and spend 5 mins each rotating 3 different parts for your entire practice (could be a single bar, could be a line, or entire section). It's known as 'interleaving' and while it won't feel as productive as drilling the same thing over and over, your brain will be making deeper conections over time. Finally, you should check out Come As You Are, by far the easiest of the three!
@ericiidx Жыл бұрын
@@DG-Drums Thanks for the tips! That double kick is definitely tricky for a beginner. Sometimes I get it, but when I don't, it all falls off the rails! I'll be sure to devote equal time practicing different sections going forward; I was likely spending too much time practicing just the verse of "In Bloom", since it was the one thing I could manage to play at full speed. I'll give Come As You Are a shot, too! I was just drawn to the first two tracks of the album, due to the impact that Dave Grohl's drumming had on me the first time I heard them, before I had any interest in drumming. So powerful!

Best tutorial I’ve found on this song! Couldn’t figure out that groove after the intro until I saw this. All the others gloss right over that kick pattern like it’s no big deal

Thanks Andre. That kick pattern is probably one of the hardest bits to really master. Take your time keeping it slow.

Hey so I totally agree with you at around the 5min mark about not playing those shadow 1/8 notes when it’s supposed to just be 1/4 notes but… as I’m watching Dave play it Live I see that he’s actually playing five 1/8 notes during that part and accenting the 1/4 notes, how come so many people say it’s 1/4 notes there even though he’s clearly playing 1/8 notes on camera? I’m just confused lol
@DG-Drums Жыл бұрын
You'd have to show me the clip, but I'd imagine he's probably 'moeller whipping' the notes. They create the sound of quarters with an eighth note 'feel' for the drummer. Either will basically sound the same. I'm confident he was playing quarters in the studio, it doesn't mean he has to play it the same live.
@Scrub_Jake Жыл бұрын
@@DG-Drums ok thanks and I was referring to him playing it live at the Ford recently where it’s just him on stage by himself with the blue toms.
@DG-Drums Жыл бұрын
@@Scrub_Jake Just been having a look at that vid, and one from '92, and then the drums only... So yes! he does moeller those live, quarter note sound with an eighth note feel. However in the studio version (drums only), I can't here any of those upstrokes in between so I'm guessing the engineer asked him to keep strict quarters (total guess!). Great spot!

if you’re referring to him playing eighth notes live, I’ve seen that too, but I can’t hear them on the record. By all means use the floor tom on the fills, I’ve seen him do that live too.
