When you start to but stuff on you tube you have to develop "thick skin" and get used to "dislikes." The dislikes on this page would tell me one thing: they do not understand the role that we as working drummers play.....I promise if you take THIS lesson to heart it will make people think you have become a better drummer over night....I promise :-)

First time anyone has ever said “my right hand is still playing time through the fills” I never thought or was taught that about fills. A great concept to keep fills in time and to stay in the pocket through the fill. Thanks Jim that quote has clarified playing fills for me and is ranked number 2 in the best advice list, ranked right behind slowing down and building speed when learning something new. Thanks Jim!

Just got your survival drumming book and am blown away! I recommend this for every drummer. Finally a book with top beats, fills and the best drumming play-alongs I've heard. I have all Tommy igoe books and play-alongs and they are great also. But this is more from a realistic perspective of everyday drumming. Jim Riley.. You're the man ;) Get his book

Thanks Jim! Excellent lesson and presentation. You're one of my top drummers. Love the passion and attention to the littlest detail. Drumming is more than wailing away on the drums,,,,,,dynamics, stick placement, music creation and carrying the beat and groove. It's all feeling! 59 year old drummer and drumming since second grade and learning grooves everyday. Excellent kit and sound! Just picked up another Ludwig Classic Maple kit in white marine pearl. It looks great next to the '66 Ludwig Blue Sparkle. Thanks for your knowledge and sharing! Feel the groove and keep the beat!!!

I really wish more drummers would take this to heart! Grooving pays the bills for sure! Interesting that you pointed out the right hand, I never really thought about that and it makes perfect sense! Your drums sound fantastic!

Jim, great job on explaining the application of those fills. There timeless and powerful and like you said the right hand keeps chomping out those eighth notes and you just keep on driving the beat and never losing the groove. I personally love playing the Pat Boone Debbie Boone with a little bit of a rough at the beginning.

Thank you Jim - I enjoyed both - the Drumeo lesson and this 9min essentials. It is much easier to follow you from that angle of the camera. And now I'm off to the kit to practice :)
