Losing steam, cripes, I still need to get the water boiling, before I can even begin to think about steam. YOUR SKILLS ARE OFF THE CHART. I so appreciate sharing all your years of knowledge. I HAVE TO SEE YOU LIVE SOME DAY!

Love the analyzation & honest feedback to yourself. Great hearing your thoughts on building a solo

Self criticism is more than very honorable especially since you're already such an advanced player. But yes, tension/release is always key when talking about music so u definitely spot on with your self analysis but i'd take it with a grain of salt as you did great with choosing to stick to melodies instead of relying on muscle memory and chops which, let's admit it,most of us do in similar situations. So kudos to you for still pushing yourself when you've already proven a great musician and teacher. If there's room for improvement still, I'm sure you'll go for it and it will keep being inspiring for all of us. Thanks, Sir.❤

Thanx for that nice advice of your thinking in rhythmical melodies and leaving chops and speed behind. That journey of your musical development gets more and more exiting and inspiring .

Thank you JP. What a good self-analysis. But it’s always more easy to reflect afterwards. When improvising, I think the goal is not to think to much while leading your narration. A difficult balance between forgetting and remembering. I have the opportunity to create a lot of drum solos by playing for dance courses, my mindset : no plan, my first (more or less) random idea must be the good one and I build on it. But there, I am not alone because I react to the dancers. See you on the site ;)

JP, your snare buildup in the Drumeo vid is beautiful! Also your follow-up groove that you played in this vid is amazing! Nice work

Love the self reflection and analysis here. Everything you said was great. I personally love the fake out but I do agree with you, after hearing you say it, that it looses steam toward the aimless. As an alternate thought: I think the aimlessness could have been leaned into more. Taken it down all the way. To the max! Slowly to the lowest dynamics and weird sound choices until it “productively” falls apart completely. Then slowly bring it all they way back and build to new heights. Leaning heavier into the choice to “fake out” and committing could have led the audience into the avant garde. Uncomfortable tension can make the eventual payoff worth so much more when you get there!! Just a thought. Needless to say but I will anyway, this solo was great and I personally never lost interest. It felt very free!! Keep up the good work!

Really great video! Only now discovered it. Fully agree on the climax being needed. The one thing my ear also really wanted there were crash cymbals. The groove idea was great, but it felt very much like a change of,...register(?) would have been good. Open sounds, as if you go from a mumble to full on singing. But perhaps that was also a choice to not do that. When you did hit them it felt like a breath of fresh air.

Very interesting…you are hard to yourself…and as an artist you are right …but from the view of a listener who is not so deep into drumming? Mhmmm…but you are right … it’s very brave what you do here with your analyses … very good learning process for me … thanks toni

Great insight to the “subjective” self-critique.😂 A reason, among many, to why I am a subscriber and student of the “Method.” 👍

Sure, I can agree that the first dynamic peak is slightly missed. I will also agree that this drum solo is lightyears away from what I can do. It’s also awesome in so many ways. Just subscribed.
