Not sure if you have heard of her yet but she's not on your channel I am speaking of the phenominal 4'9 Haruna drum beast from Lovebites the all female Power Metal band from Japan also inspired by bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest They also did a cover of Painkiller by priest and Eagle Fly Free of Helloween. most everything they do is their original stuff formed in 2016 by bassist Miho and Drummer Haruna after their band Destrose folded. They managed to find R&B Singer Asami and recruited the best guitar duo since Murry and Smith or Downing and Tipton We call them M&M for Midori (Also a bodybuilder and took number 2 ) and Miyako (who is also a classically trained Pianist.); Haruna the Drummer has a very mean double bass she is like a human metronome the band calls her the little engine that could. In 2021 Miho left for personal reasons and the band went into a year hiatus in summer of 2022 they held auditions for a new bassist won by internet sensation who at 20 already has 650,000 fans she's a prodigy like the other 4 members of lovebites all are phenominal it's said be many to be unfair that one band has the best of every position and the 2 best guitarists. Fami the new bassist has taken nicely and here's a song from their recent come back tour following the release of their 4rth album Judgement Day 1st with Fami onboard, and this was her first live with the band. Lovebites (Named after Lzzy Hale and Halestorm's song Love Bites and so do I) Hammer of wrath /Live heavens gate kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnnViIWKZa-Yl8U

@@AndrewRooneyDrums "Powell died on 5 April 1998 following a car crash while driving his Saab 9000 at 104 mph (167 km/h) in bad weather on the M4 motorway near Bristol". In the rain, on the phone with his girl (which has a whole story with that) and not wearing a seat belt :(. He was into motorcycles, cars and racing, so he loved speed. Was VERY sad of his death.

Great reaction Andrew! That opening fill by Cozy sets the tone for the entire track!! Yes, I think he lived/played a bit under the shadow of Bonzo, but those that know KNOW that he was legit and a fantastic player! This song certainly exemplifies that! Cheers!

I'm one of the non drummers that watch your channel. This is one of the best rock songs ever written. I never saw Cozy in Rainbow but was lucky enough to see him in Whitesnake and The Michael Schenker Group. He was wonderful. In all my time of watching gigs there are only two drum soloists that really stay in my memory, one is Neil Peart and the other is Cozy Powell ( his solo is to the theme from the 633 squadron and 1812 overture). Try "Kill The King" next or "Gates of Babylon"

Bill Ward LOVED stargazer....On the bus, Black Sabath played it often and referred to it as ' that song with the drum intro'. Nobody was starting songs with anything like that at the time! Cozy paved the way for drummers to open songs with cool motifs- think Lee Kerslake 1981 Over the Mountain.

Now that you’re delving into Cozy couple of points he held his snare left stick over palm, he came from Jeff Beck group so some jazz influence (maybe explains that left stick action) Very well respected amongst the musical fraternity of the 70s and beyond Ps I saw the Rainbow Rising Tour at Sydney Hordern Pavilion in Nov 76

There's a great video clip of MSG 'Into the Arena' live in 80-'81 which shows his left hand traditional grip which is a must for Cozy fans & drummers alike! - also he played on a ton of sessions - alot of them soul & r&b in the late 60's when in his late teens - apparently, there is a whole album of soul covers that he did with Jeff Beck from @69-70 somewhere....unreleased still, to my knowledge.

Man, that timing is funny! Listen to this.. When he passed away in 98 i was 10 years old and it was my that time i started writing on a diary in an attempt to fix my ugly letters, i was already into buying magazines mostly for their free CD's and then i saw on the mag cover Cozy was no longer with us. I then wrote it on my diary and it was literally on the first page so everytime i opened it i was remembering that tragic event. I quit writing after sometime and today guess what, 3 hours ago i had just purchased a new diary to start writing again personal stuff and thoughts and haven't done that since then! Now i just witnessed your reaction with my newly diary laying on the speaker monitor. I think it's a good idea starting the diary with that. Cheers man, keep the good stuff coming!

🤩👌💥💯🎶 Cozy "Cotzy" Powell was quite under rated, partially 'coz' of his relatively short career on sticks and kicks in those few groups which raised in the familirity this kinda "genre". On top of that thinking late Ronnie Jay Dee was a recording artist before The Beatles is also often forget fact... Nicely done män and keep on rockin with these kinda awesomeness of music. 🤘😎 🇫🇮 💙

Cozy was definitely underrated. One of the strongest rock drummers in rock history. Saw him with Emerson Lake and Powell, and even though that group wasn't the heavy rock of Rainbow, Powell played their music as his own and still brought in the power that was Powell.
@simonagger206

Well, apart from giving you a bunch of flak for never having heard this before (!😂!), Cozy was, and still is, in the music he left behind, a monster. Probably THE coolest drummer that graced the 70's and 80's - all the stereotypes where there...race car and motorbike racer, black leather jacket, cool haircut, double bass mastery (when only Carmine Appice & Brian Downey were playing in the U.K. and, of course a single song where DP's Ian Paice 'borrowed' Kieth Moons bass drum for 'Fireball'), chart topping hit single ( with his own band 1974), big drum solo to 1812 overture complete with orchastra backing tape & fireworks/explosions, and, sadly, killed in his prime doing 104mph on the M4 motorway, while on his phone to his girlfriend, a married woman in 1994. RIP. He came through the ranks in the 60's as a young teenager playing for years, doing sessions - lots of soul music - similar to John Bonhams interests. Took his name from Cozy Cole the jazz drummer. Too bad I can't post pictures of Cozy here.....as a kid, and a drummer, you wanted to be like Cozy! Check out 'Ice cream Cakes' with the Jeff Beck Group for some of the tastiest drums, complete with his signature sequencial hi-hat barks and wafer smooth 16th note grooves... Andrew, thankyou so much for taking time to take a look at our beloved Cozy Powell. Interestingly, when John Bonham died, Cozy was one of 2 drummers that LZ theoretically considered before calling it a day ( the other was Carmine Appice - who ironically, inspired JB and got JB his first Ludwig endorsement around 1969.). Similarities also with the great Bill Ward - jazz inspirations, double bass and cowbell phrasing that just kills ( like in Black Sabs ' The Wizard'). Saw him live in '84 with Whitesnake - killer drum solo, black yamaha kit, 26" bass drums with big white pillows partially hanging out over the low cut batters, which where emblazoned with the standard Cozy and Powell in old English font, on R & L drum batters respectively. The spotlights on the drum riser shining out horizontally into the Birmingham NEC crowd through dry ice, and flames shooting up at least 10 feet in the air across the base of the drum riser, while he incorporated blistering 'quads' with bass ostenatos/ tom & very tasty snare work, along with the 633 squadron theme and 1812 overture in there. You dont forget things like that as a 15-16 yr old. Had fun commmenting on all the comments above! Cheers for posting & dont worry, you'll eventually get to the STUDIO version of Snowblind by Black Sabbath- just for Bill Ward's ghost notes, pushing'pulling/phrasing, hi hat & snare work. 👍

Rainbow with Dio and Cozy Powell were incredible. There's a live album called "Rainbow On Stage" that is in my opinion one of the greatest rock live albums ever made. Definitively recommended 👍

I second that...as a kid in the 70s I used to listen to the song " Mistreated" over & over & over, for an hour or 2 at a time, for no particular reason. Just because.

Agreed, the live album is their best album, even better than Rising. Their best songs are on the first album, sadly the production on that album was very weak, if only Martin Birch had produced it. Their live shows however let us hear the first album as it should have been. Though I will say even better than the live album are their live performances from the 1977 tour on youtube. Hearing the same song each gig played differently is amazing.

Cozy, Dio, and Blackmore....just legendary. Stargazer is from one of the great albums, 'Rainbow Rising'; and following only a few weeks after Rush's '2112'... What a year was 1976! It's interesting, how you categorised Cozy. Maybe, it was just a UK thing. I don't know; but Cozy was a star drummer, for us. If you saw Rainbow, live, the two bass drums were emblazoned with 'Cozy' and 'Powell' rather than the band's name. I recall him being on Children's TV (where he broke the world record for the most drums played in 60 seconds... 400... Had to look that number up! 😊). He had solo hits in the UK, such as 'Dance with the Devil'. Well, 'solo' insofar as the artist was named as Cozy Powell, but included other musicians (such as Suzi Quatro on bass). Over the years he played with virtually everyone who was anyone: The Jeff Beck Group, Rainbow, Michael Schenker Group, Gary Moore, Graham Bonnet, Brian May, Whitesnake, Emerson, Lake & Powell, Black Sabbath, Malmsteen etc, etc. He appears on over 60 albums. He was friends with Bonham (both being in the Birmingham area at the time) and other local artists (Robert Plant, Noddy Holder, Tony Iommi et al). It's not lost on me that I may have been overly exposed to him and his like, with me also being 'local', relatively speaking. Noddy Holder's name was carved (by Noddy, one assumes) in one of my school desks! 😂 Nevertheless, and in short, Cozy was a legend, and remains so in my eyes. Thanks for doing this. 👍🏽

Brilliant that you went to the same school as Noddy Holder!! Going to give Rooney a hard time about being a drummer and never hearing Stargazer, or at least, Cozy's drum intro!! Finally, probably some Anglo-centric bent from us lot that grew up in awe of Cozy!

Cozy was really influential . He really defined his style with Jeff Beck and his own band Bedlam before making this timeless statement with Rainbow .

Incredible song from Rainbow rising and the greatest lineup they ever had. Cozy is obviously on fire here, but Ritchie Blackmore was never better. He’s playing in another dimension here.

Cozy is fantastic. I saw Rainbow back in the day, and they were so good. Great reaction. Edit: please do a cover! Also check out Cozy's earlier work with Beck, and later with Schenker.

Hi Andrew, fantastic analysis. Cozy one of my fauvorite drummers as a musician into a band. He wasn't a showman player or the faster or the most ability with sticks but his playing was soooo wonderful into any band were he played. I love him. Please check "Lost in Hollywood" from Rainbow's "Down to Earth" Album

When Ritchie auditioned drummers for Rainbow, his audition was to ask them to play a shuffle for 15 minutes. That was the audition. He knew he wanted endurance, so he hired for endurance.

Apparently, Cozy was the only one that he felt was totally comfortable playing a shuffle...'He was the only one who could play a shuffle..' quipped Blackmore later.

Rainbow, Dio, Powell, Tony Carey and Jimmy Bain were the classic lineup of Rainbow that also foreshadowed the Genre of Power Metal, both musically and lyrically. Powell himself has been said to be a major factor in establishing doublebass drumming in rock and metal, with this song in particular being quoted as an early and influental one. I'm pretty sure I've heard double bass drums on earlier songs, but he's definitely one of the GOAT. Can't wait for the next, I love me some Rainbow :D Now, I know I say this on every comment (and I need to comment more tbh) but you also need to check out Jan Axel "Hellhammer" Blomberg, especially on the studio version of Dimmu Borgir's song "The Chosen Legacy". You'll know why when you're done :P

Cozy Powell was one of the best drummers of his time and deserved much more recognition. If you want to hear him at his best, get his “over the top” CD. On it, his version of the 1812 overture is priceless.

I think it was on Tiswas - that legendary Saturday morning show we all used to watch in the late 70's/early 80's. He was on there with Robert Plant in 1980 just after Bonhams death & laid down half the drum tracks for material that was to become Plants first solo album ( Phil Collins was the other drummer!)
