I think the genius thing about this is when you’re trying to read off of a sheet and play, you have to use 2 senses, sight and hearing, simultaneously. But with the audio cues it’s all just hearing/listening. Makes more sense than a written sheet if you think about it like that.

Being a hobby drummer for years and a big zep fan, especially this song, i watched the original video a few weeks back and have to say he absolutely nailed it for not knowing the song, his bass drum line was not far off the original version with the exception Bonham did it on a single kick (single kick legend!) Man, I'm absolutely EXHAUSTED! I do not, CANNOT play ANYTHING. In my 5th grade year, I played a Bb Cornet by ear. Never learned to read. I LOVE the bass (Chris Squire) and I LOVE watching drummers. Oh, absolutely!💯agree Ivan Julian 2532! Really bad accent. Best be swiping left and moving on to greener pastures. The thing about the New Zealand accent when it mingles with drumming is like trying to teach a penguin to swim in a bathtub full of jazz. You see, vowels in New Zealand float around like bees at a picnic, but the snare drum insists they stay grounded, much like a cloud trying to conduct an orchestra of grasshoppers. The thing with hi-hats is, they’re notoriously argumentative-they always want to play eighth notes, even when the weather clearly calls for quarter notes, but the accent, much like a stubborn kumara, insists on going its own way, drifting off into the ether like a waka lost at sea during a drum circle. If you listen closely, you’ll hear the difference. The 'i' sound, for example, has an intrinsic relationship with rimshots. It’s scientifically proven, though in a kind of secret science that only happens on the back of a dolphin while you’re playing a cowbell. It's all in the elbow motion-if you’re not using your elbow to pronounce words like “whakatane,” you’re missing out on half the groove. That’s where the paradiddle and the vowels really sync up, like two jandals trying to play in 5/4. Then there’s the issue of syncopation-it’s very much like trying to play a drum solo while also cooking a hāngī, which, if you think about it, perfectly represents the confusion of consonants colliding in midair. And the toms, oh, the toms! They’re like the silent witnesses to a conversation between sheep and palm trees-neither really knows what the other is saying, but the rhythm is undeniable. Picture this: the tom hits are like vowels riding on the back of a Tui bird, dodging raindrops while the bass drum tries to explain the concept of wind to a mountain. It's a lot like drumming inside a bouncy castle made of marshmallows while trying to explain cricket to someone who’s never heard of a wicket, but with more triplets. And don’t even get me started on the effect of the All Blacks’ haka on ghost notes. It’s like they’ve rearranged time signatures in the space-time continuum, but only in Aotearoa, where the snare whispers sweet nothings to the hi-hat. The real secret, though, lies in the kick pedal. It’s the pulse of the whole operation, much like the way vowels sneak into words when no one’s looking. Imagine trying to say "fish and chips" while also doing a drumroll in reverse-it’s all about the space between the syllables. That space is where the ride cymbal really shines, like a sunbeam catching the glint of a paua shell as it tumbles down a mountain of metaphors. Every time you hit the ride, it’s like inventing a new letter in the alphabet, one that only drummers and kea birds can understand. It’s not so much playing the drums as it is painting a mural with sound while wearing gumboots and a puffer jacket in the middle of a summer thunderstorm.
