I'm not a drummer, but I really like these reviews. I find it interesting that foot technique, grip, and a few other technical elements are always discussed, but we never really hear much about the different ways the players split up the beats, choose their cymbal hits, and the like. Maybe it's assumed on these that they have great skills at being mathematically astute and doing all the classic drummer stuff. I'd be interested in a "what I look at when I critique drummers" video, if you ever found time to do such a thing. Non drummers, I think, would find this really intriguing, as we can't always trust ourselves to know more than if the drummer is enhancing the song and playing on the beat. Maybe "Evaluating drum performance for non drummers", if such a thing is even possible. Regardless, love the channel, and thanks for all your time and expertise.
@danmarshall5895

The only video I can think of where he talked about splitting up the beats was the Fleshgod video because of him syncing the cymbals to the symphonic element and his drum work to the guitar parts.

Aaron sisco triggers, use samples. Not just a dry sound from the bass drum. It can sound clicky, it can make it sound like an 808 for hip hop. Spencer prewitt has powerful single strokes. But he also uses other techniques, triggers dont mean anything. Stop saying stuff you see other people say on the internet. Dont think someones comment on a 12 year old video is factual.

The holes aren't specific to the type of cymbal but this one is a china, the holy china from sabian. The holes make the cymbal sound dryer, more explosive and it also affects a bit the pitch and the overtones depending on the size and the spacing between the holes

Hi Marthyn, i´m a fan of both the channel and your work as a drummer. Nice to see these videos coming out on a regular basis. However I think you could have mentioned 2 things to me that are the most important about C.Turner - first off , the insane way he goes through all these subdivisions and metric modulations seamlessly, it´s like listening to drums that were programmed - The guy is really "on the grid". And secondly how he looks super tense and with "not the best posture" but plays really really good and relaxed, I think that´s interesting as well. I know your goal with these videos is to dissect and talk about the techniques they are using, but It´s my opinion it´d be more interesting to point out the the things that make these drummers be who they are musically, than just mentioning that they use german or american grip. Please do not take this as a negative comment. A fan , Alex

@@marthynjovanovic Yes, you are right about that there´s no point on mentioning terms that the casual viewer won´t understand or be engaged by. I just feel like there are some unique traits (like you mentioned the "zone posture" ) to these drummers, and that´s the most important thing about them. Again, of course you are doing a great job talking about their technique and all, but in the end of the day, what differentiates these amazing drummers, from all the 9999999999999999 guys out there that can play 260+ bpms singles or doubles nowadays? Their own unique traits and style. I do know that can be hard and vague to describe, so again pls don´t take this as negative feedback or just random internet trolling/bitching. keep up the good work. Alex

You have to review Tony Westermark from Soreption. Very unique style. Probably one of the best swivel techniques i've seen.

Great drummers and excellent channel! Very addictive and helpful. Would be really cool to see an in depth analysis of the beast Max Kolesne. Or to get him talking on the Technique podcast.

Most of your analysis concerns technique and mechanics, which is awesome and super informative. I think it'd be cool to also discuss the creative aspects of the drum parts and the compositional merit of what they're playing (a la Rick Beato), if that's something you'd ever be interested in, either within the same video or in a different type of analysis video. Chris Turner for example is really creative and original IMO and puts the writing of most other "djent-ish" drummers to shame.

Hey marthyn, I'd be interested in seeing your analysis of Bastion Thusgaard, new soilwork drummer, taught by the mighty Dirk Verburen, maybe a double, comparing styles in the same songs

I REALLY enjoyed this video. I think you should do some of the studio videos he has. He has way crazier stuff than this song. Please? :)

Marthyn Jovanovic that’s fair. I actually saw you say that to someone else right after I commented. It’s only because some of my favorite songs don’t have good live videos yet :/

Suggestions for drummers i find interesting, that you may wanna check out: Dave Haley from Psycroptic - Reason being that i love the way he plays along with the accents of the guitar. Really brings the music to life (Lacertine Forest is a good example) Alex Rüdinger - He's a super solid drummer and has excellent technique. I especially love the drum videos where he plays The Faceless songs (also good ones with Necrophagist and Obscura) Hannes Grossmann - Speaking of Obscura. The work he did on their Cosmogenesis album is so tasty! Very progressive drummer, too. KRIHM - Absolutely amazing drummer. Super tight, great technique and has some interesting ideas as well. I can recommend a video of a song he did with Redemptor. Some cool stuff in that one. Spencer Prewett from Archspire - The music in Archspire is crazy fast and technical which his drumming reflects. He has some really unique ways to do things, including his blasting. There's a good video of him playing their song "Lucid" which shows off most of his techniques. David McGraw from Cattel Decapitation - the guy is an absolute mad man and plays for one of the best metal bands around. That's pretty much it! Hope you will look into these and maybe give your take on them. I'm not a drummer myself, but i'm a bass player so i notice a lot of rythmic things drummers do, but it would be really cool to get a drum teachers take on these drummers, since i really, really love their work!
