Just to echo other posts, yes, Moon's real strength was in playing high energy rock songs. He never actually played an extended solo showpiece during a Who concert. Young Man Blues from Live At Leeds is indeed a better example of his primal aggressive over the top playing within the context of a rock song.

Garey, the man clapping you noticed was Ringo Starr, who was supposed to be there watching the show in the back of the theater where it was filmed. I remember watching this Midnight Special (I think it was; hey it was over 45 years ago) show just to see Moonie drum. I didn't care for the show normally. Someone asked Moon who his favorite drummer was after the solo and he replied Ringo, which got a big cheer from the audience and that same clip was shown again. That one clip of him clapping was used several times in that show. Probably the only one they had for whatever reason. The one thing I remember about Moonie was his hand speed. Lots of drummers like Neil Peart and Dave Grohl site Moon as an influence. Ginger Baker didn't like him and thought of him as more as a banger than a drummer. He was I think completely self taught, and fit in with the Who and their time, that's for sure. He drummed on pure instinct.

Garey, all lovers of Moon's inspired and original drumming know that this solo is a total disaster. I love your commentaries and your spirit, so could I ask you instead to do a review of Moon's drumming to such songs as "The Real Me," "Bargain" (great intro; fabulous triplets with his two bass drums; great off-beat cymbals), "Behind Blue Eyes" (beautiful six-stroke rolls on the snare), or "The Song is Over" (where he and Entwistle are listening to each other, and playing off each other). Or just review the inexhaustible drumming (now available in an isolated track) to "Won't Get Fooled Again" (wonderful use of flams, really original phrasing, and juicy triplets on his two bass drums). When Moon was bad, he was very very bad, but when he was good, he was quite sublime. Above all, he knew how to *phrase* a fill (despite what Pete Townshend says). But he couldn't phrase a drum solo to save his life.

Keith Moon was an enigmatic mix of light and dark. Putting Keith Moon alone in front of an audience and expecting him to perform solo was not only disastrous, it was sadistic in light of who he was in retrospect. For him it was all about showcasing the band, the music, the lunacy, and camaraderie. Not only was he uninterested and unrehearsed in soloing, but showcasing himself minus The Who in front of him was so painful he had to get more stoned than usual to do it. In order to understand his genius and contribution to rock and roll, you have to look at his playing as well as the persona he created in the context of what rock drummers had accomplished up to that point. He willfully abandoned studied rudimentary techniques and disciplined practice. As a result, his playing was more intuitive, unconventional, wild, creative, inspiring and powerful than anything displayed by rock drummer before him. The trade-off being that he was the last drummer you would expect to put on a clinic..

Listen to the Quadrophenia - the whole album, especially The Real Me, but any song on the album. 5:15, Sea and Sand, etc.Tight, precise, & flawless, especially in tandem with John’s bass. Listen to Underture from Tommy. He had such innate genius that suffered from his indefatigable partying & complete madness and recklessness. But even when hammered he was still incredible. Moon is , along with Roger Taylor, a drummer who had no real time for solos. Many may have requested something on Moon but I think this doesn't do him justice at all. To any of the keyboard warriors who criticise Moon as a drummer, try listening to almost any of 'Tommy' , 'Who's Next ' or 'Quadrophenia' (or 'Live at Leeds'). Four albums with some of the liveliest mosy driving drumming that made The Who so good.

I was kind of dreading this video. This was in late 1974 when The Who were not very active. It was the beginning of a downward spiral, his wife recently left him and he just started to live in LA where the party scene was very unhealthy. Moon never had a drum set at home and never practiced. This was a far cry from the revolutionary drummer of the '60's. FWIW both Tony Williams and Elvin Jones were fans of Moon's drumming.

For the people who aren't fans of The Who or Moon, I hope this isn't the only clip they ever see of him performing. His work IN THE SONGS is what we love about his drumming. So unique! This video sort of reminds me of Peart's appearance on Letterman. As a drummer, I was so looking forward to that, but it was really flat. I think the TV sound quality had a lot to do with it, too. Peart was clearly a better soloist than Moon, but as much as I LOVE Rush and his work in the songs... well, I'll just leave it there. R.I.P Moonie and Pratt!

Your correct, it’s a variety show. That’s a special drum set for this event. And his strength was in the song live, not solos. It was at the Cow-Palace where he passed out, stagehands lifting him out from behind his drum set. Took a animal tranquilizer before the show.

Yeah, this clip is a shame to see. Moon was never the biggest fan of big solos, but in their set (a variety show) it was almost demanded of him. I think it's pretty clear to see that he's a bit out if his element here. On top of all that, these is when his life really started to spiral. He was quite the alcoholic, and was hopped on drugs constantly, to the point where he had trouble focusing, sometimes unable to even stay seated during proformances. It all ruined a lot of the amazing talent he once had. Keith Moon always excelled with playing in live songs, solos were never really his bag. He approached the kit like it was a keyboard or piano most of the time, focusing more on pitch differences than extreme rhythmic changes. It was a very unique approach to drumming at the time. I really miss Moonie, it's a shame what became of him, in his prime, he really was something special.

It's important to note that Keith Moon was back to his monster self (e.g., 1975 Texas concert) during the Who's concert tour (e.g., 1975-1976) to promote their criminally underrated album Who By Numbers. Unfortunately, the Who were subsequently inactive from late 1976-1978, and Moon became a mess both mentally and physically. During the recording of the album Who Are You, Moon could only muster snippets of his former brilliance and he died only a few days before that record was released.

Keith Moon was completely out there on he's own, and completely unique! Some of the greatest drum parts he pulled off, if not actually everything he played was adlib and straight from he's inner natural ability to just be able play drums! It is said he never ever practiced during he's time with The Who, in fact he never even kept a drum kit at home! As Marc has said below, listen to Live at Leeds, or for that matter to the Isle of white concert, If you really want a real insight in to he's playing. But I have to totally agree with this video reaction, and would even go as far as to say you have been very kind to call it interesting. He could solo all the way through every Who song, but he couldn't really just sit down and solo without some sort of guide melody to lock in to. I've always found this video very hard to watch, as it sounds to me like someone trying to play like Keith Moon to impress their friends, not like Keith Moon himself! You mentioned Bonham. Bonham was a far far superior drummer to Keith Moon in virtually every aspect, but even he sat behind Keith at a concert one night and had to admit, he just could not work out what the hell Keith was playing, or how! That in itself speaks volumes for Keith Moon! Not technically the best by a long shot, but I have never ever truly heard anyone play exactly like him. He really was unique, and that is why he will always remain my no.1 rock drummer of all time. All the others could run rings around him with the technical ability, but non could actually copy what he done! Anyway, fair assessment on the video :)

this was too funny (your commentary) and extremely enjoyable. You being so nice while in your head you surely must be gagging. lol! Poor Keith. I made my living playing Prog. rock in the 70's and 80's. And I had been told by many club owners that I was the first drummer to play Yes, Genesis and Gentle Giant in the Rockies. I mastered all of Phil and White's toolbox. But when it came to solo....YIKES! We very quickly decided that my solo should actually accentuate the bass solos! Which actually turned out to be incredibly potent. Well, Keith was brilliant otherwise.

Listen to Underture from Tommy, Kettle drums to the full kit, pretty amazing stuff. Moonie was unique. He could at times be very melodic in his playing as well as being completely off the wall. He'd play fills during vocal solos! If you watch live Who concerts you'll see Moon keeping an almost constant eye on Pete to his left. They fed off each other. The Who have been described as lead vocals, lead bass and lead drums. Somehow they made it all work like no other band ever did.

I couldn’t help but watch Gary’s face of bewilderment especially when he noticed Moon’s face was painted. Keith is better than this. I believe it was a tough time for band and he was just phoning it in. Too bad. There gotta be something else out there. Hey Gary, just a thought, instead of just reacting to solos ( which can get tedious ) , why don’t you do songs also. Some drummers just aren’t good soloists but play for the song and are more musical in that realm. My first recommendation would be Achilles Last Stand live 1979 LZ with Bonham just being a locomotive. Songs , to me , show the drummers key part in a band instead of a solo. Just my 2 cents. Cheers.

The kid from the audience was Helpern something...Halpern who was a drummer familiar with the Who material and was in the audience during a who concert somewhere in North America. Halpern responded to Townsends call for someone from the audience who could play drums. Halpern came up on stage and proceeded to play a couple numbers for them respectably enough apparently, after Keith fell on unconscious and had to be carried off stage.

I think Keith Moon had a ton of talent and good, but erratic, and my favorite drummer ever Peter Criss was amazing and far more structured and from 74- 78 before the coke and booze deteriorated him, Peter was amazing and definitely talented!!!

Always struck me a a drummer who was absolutely fantastic while playing songs, but not strong on solos. I feel the same about Bill Ward also- one of my favourite rock drummers, but solos were not his strong suit. And that's completely OK- it's about playing for the song.

A lot of people commenting that moon was creative musically, but not full of technique and chops...Agreed. Someone said here that playing what's right for the song, and not nesasarily being highly technical is "ok". Fine. Then let's call him what he was. An ok drummer. Stop calling him one of the greatest drummers ever....Bonham, Copeland, Beauford, Peart, Palmer, Steve Smith, ..These are just SOME rock drummers who were both technical AND created artistic drum parts. To be GREAT, you should be able to do BOTH. Moon was an ok drummer, Who also happens to be shamefully overrated.

Keith was the first person to admit he wasn't the greatest drummer of all time but he did proudly claim to be the greatest Keith Moon style drummer of all time. One of the saddest stories I've heard was Pete Townshend, after Keith died, saying he'd run out of ideas and would turn to throw it to Keith and Moonie wasn't there.

As others have pointed out, Keith Moon was on the decline by the time of this video. Way too many drugs slowed him down and hampered his creativity. Still a lot of fun to watch, but far from his best work.

These comments where terms which normally have negative connotations are used to elevate his playing “style” are kind of sad. Terms like “unorthodox” or “unique”, don’t flatter him. Inability to be part of the rhythm section, or failure to use a HH, aren’t good. His bombastic playing is definitely one of a kind, but not musical. He’s often described as a master of dynamics, I think it’s just a coincidence. If a non-musically inclined person were to just assemble a kit with no conventional knowledge and banged on it with unmatched sticks, he’d give Moony a run for hi $$$. But it damn sure is entertaining.

I guess you had to watch a solo, but that was rather sloppy and unimaginative for Keith. I suggest you give him another view. Everybody has their favorite show, but you could pick at random from nearly anything through their last tour (except for the show you mentioned at the Cow Palace where someone put horse tranquilizer in his drink). And not come out badly. He was a drummer who soloed all the time! After '76 they took a break, Moonie's health went downhill, and though there is some footage of the band performing in 1978, Keith was not at his best. He died later that year of an accidental overdose of the drug he was taking to treat his alcoholism.
