That was totally awesome!!! I'm just beginning to learn the double pedal. I'm a 3 time stroke survivor who also has drop foot in both feet. I wear full leg braces. Art has become a household name in the drumming community. I enjoy watching his past and current videos with Lamb. As a drummer myself, I enjoy learning some of your techniques. Thanks for uploading and sharing. When I started drumming in the 90's, we didn't have access to content like this to learn from. Most of our learning was by ear and guessing what's being played. Wish I had this technology to learn from like today. So kids,... take advantage of it. Soak up the knowledge.

This technique is so simple. I have always been a fan of dual kicks and even for someone who doesn't have a great grasp on keeping in rhythm it helps to alternate feet doing this. It has really helped. Thank you Art for sharing with us the power of the heel-toe technique

Let's everyone just keep in mind that it doesn't matter what pedals you have or how big your feet are to do heal-toe. The CORRECT way of doing heal-toe doesn't even require you to have your heal on the pedal.
@v.96528 жыл бұрын
This is also a correct way to do heel-toe, but it only works on a long board. But this technique is not incorrect in any way. If it works for you, it works, if not, then try another technique.
@maidenfan1021012 жыл бұрын
I'd agree with that last statement about the amount of work you put in being the same with triggers as it is if you aren't using them, or so was the case when I utilized them for a number of years. The reason I (and I'd hazard to say a few other people as well) stopped using them was that for most of the music I play, the little deviations in dynamic level are just more appealing than a consistent sound.

Most people use HT for double strokes, some (like me) use it for single strokes. There are mainly two versions of HT, one version, where the second hit comes from the heel slamming on the pedal and another version (mostly for people with big feet) where you do a very similar motion but do both hits with the ball of your foot.

Practice, it's not that your pedal is too small or your feet too big. I'm just learning heel-toe just like the rest of the people watching this video. This is probably one of the best tutorials on heel-toe, but you might want to also check KZbin for some more just to get a better idea. I think most people (myself included) were expecting one of the strokes to come from the heel of the foot. The guys at freedrumlessons (jared falk) in particular does a good job of demonstrating this.

What is a ride cymbal? This man may never know...
@willfendon691610 жыл бұрын
It's actually very simple. There are 7 types of cymbals in the world (though only 4 of them are used generally) there is the Crash, which is the standard cymbal he's hitting, there is the ride like you said, which is a really large cymbal which you don't necessarily hit hard, you kinda just tap it with the tip of your sticks. There is a splash, which are the little cymbals that are in the middle which make a sound similar to well, a splashing sound. And finally, there's the Hybrid, which kinda sounds like tinfoil being hit, and are the two cymbals where the Middle is inclined down. You're welcome :D

@theone19498 жыл бұрын
+Ville Nummisalo look up Jared falk videos he has a pretty explanation. Actual heel toe (as Jared falk explains) is actually more like toe toe . You drop you heel and hit the pedal with like the balls of your feet and then you kind of slide forward and get the second hit.
@Villex938 жыл бұрын

Hollandia SV Yes, but it makes no difference to how difficult or easy something is to play, that's a misconception.
@Jacksoncomplex9 жыл бұрын
You dont need much power at all for triggers you can just tap it and the sample will register. Without a trigger the sound may not be picked up by a mic
@pietzsche9 жыл бұрын
I've heard that said lots, personally, the faster I go, the harder I hit, not because I'm consciously trying, but that's just how it is. Most drummers I know of that use triggers do so because the bass drum hit that fast stops sounding like individual hits, and starts sounding like a single sustaining note because of the physical shape of the sound wave. I don't know anyone who can play that fast and doesn't have the power. You could be right, but it seems like a myth to me tbh.
@rockin98211 жыл бұрын
If you're just doing 32nd note doubles, then that's true. However, if you're going to play continuous 32nd notes, or if you're a single player trying to play 16ths or 16th note triplets, then you want to conserve motion by not constantly having to actually move your foot too far out of position on the footboard. So a longer footboard helps tremendously in that case. My current pedal of choice is a Pearl Demon Drive in longboard mode (used a DW 9000, and Axis A Longboard before that).

Coming from a music guy (not a drum specialist or anything) You get more clarity from two bass drums rather than two pedals on one drum. If you listen someone play double kick on one drum, then double kick on two drums. Youll notice the difference.

Im a size 10/11 so i had a similar issue. If you haven't already, I'd recommend using a longboard pedal, you may still have to move your feet back after striking with the heel, but that can be practiced. Also try taking your shoes off, that'll shave off a few centimetres.

One reason heel toe is much easier on a direct drive vs. chain drive pedal is because the board comes back at the same exact time the beater does, making for a fluid motion. No one says you must own direct drive pedal, but they mimic realistically how your feet naturally move!

They are mainly for live performances, cause' you need the bass drum to be above the other sounds, specially for rock. Eq can make that, alongside with comp, but on a recording mix, not live. But producers do use triggers in the studio, like Andy Sneap, and it is simply because you can have the sound you want from your bass drum, really easy and fast, and then they process it, add eq and comp, and they have a great bass drum sound in a faster way, without the need of mic positioning, etc.

many rely on the fact that instead of using triggers, lets use two base drums to cut the resonance so that we get clear sound. what do you think about that? whats more useful. when i played on a single bass drum with double chain pedals,anything around 190 plus sounds muffled. even when i have a decent technique/control over my muscles. i have never thought of using triggers because i felt they give you an easy way out, maybe its my psyche that keeps telling me to refrain from it.what you think?
