In this video, I present 6 categories of etudes and exercises I find to be more helpful and more musical than Hanon. If you haven't already, be sure to look at part 1!

I am a retired senior who decided to learn piano. I am working through the Royal Conservatory Celebration Series Piano Repertoire and Etudes and managed to complete level six. I am able to play pieces, but not particularly well, and now I know why. I was never introduced to any exercises, such as the ones you demonstrated on your KZbin videos 1 and 2. Looks as if I need to take a step back and work on the six exercises and Etudes to improve my piano playing technique and skills. Great and helpful videos and reference materials. Thank you.

The problem with Hanon is two-fold, but these exercises share one of the two problems. Hanon's avowed and stated purpose was to strengthen the fingers, build finger dexterity and build coordination between the two hands. Okay, a worthy goal and one Hanon's exercises do promote. The problem with Hanon is that his exercises have you playing only on the white keys and playing the two hands in parallel for a very long time. In the real world, you play all 12 keys, you play in different keys and you often play in different directions in the left and right hands. I have addressed the problems with Hanon by sometimes playing in opposite directions and by attempting the exercises in other keys. Thanks for the reinforcement. Czerny is a revelation. I can decipher sheet music. One look at the first exercise in Czerny #599 and I could see that Czerny is a different world and a way forward from the mind-numbing repetition of Hanon. You can play Hanon, but don't live by Hanon alone. Myself, I reached intermediate beginner level decades ago when I had access to college pianos and then left it. Recently a friend brought me to karaoke and group vocal class at the local senior center, and that got me going again. I bought a Roland FP-30X practice on, and I recommend it as the best acoustic piano emulator at the price point. I also have some guitar experience and a little songwriting experience too. With this background, I also can use the keyboard to play pop progressions and set lyrics to music, in addition to learning traditional piano. Another instructional series is Bartok's _Mikrokosmos._ _Mikrokosmos_ apparently is in the public domain considering Bartok died in 1945. I was able to download it complete from a website linked to the Wikipedia article. I think you can disregard the copyright disclaimers at this point. Czerny (d. 1857) is in the public domain also, of course, and available for download. You can buy either or both in print also.

Merci for this. I just watched a video and someone was explaining Hanon but wanted to know about the mirror technique. It looks like something I'll try, since I'm just a blank slate now.

I think just learning music period is the ultimate technique builder. But yes 100%! Some of the more difficult jazz transcriptions I’ve done are where I’ve seen the most growth in my technique.

Thanks for the video. You say the Czerny stuff is a great way to initiate a student who wants to get into classical stuff. What would you recommend as a jazz equivalent? Thanks

All this is good, but a lot of it still sounds like exercise and not particularly musical! The same problem that you mentioned about Hannon. So are we back to square one!?

I think the idea is the same finger number mirror each other with this technique so the brain absorbs it differently

Excellent for velocity and finger independence. I especially like to utilize the rhythmic variations he suggests in fast passages in repertoire.
