1:52 #2 and #3 are what is sometimes referred to as oblique motion (one hand moves). #4 can be either parallel motion (hands move together) or contrary motion (hands move apart). I think it helps to split #4 that way, as it has a much broader range of possibilities compared to the other steps. And then of course there's the implied final step, which is using the previous steps in various combinations. You could structure your practice to do all possible permutations of 2 steps, then 3, etc. to provide more focus there as well.

Awesome instructional. I'm a musician that plays a variety of instruments including drums. I can keep a beat but that's about it. This video and your playing has inspired me to get behind the kit with a different attitude. I don't consider myself a drummer but with your help I may just be. Refreshing video to watch & the sound coming off the rolls is exotic! Thanks.

You missed the final step: dynamics. Accenting different notes makes the same sticking sound like completely different rhythms. This is also a big part of the reason why different sticking patterns work: different sticking patterns make it more natural to move the accent to a different note.

One of the most common things among my students it's the lack of flexibility they have with their ideas. Displacements is the first step in my view. A 16th note based idea has 4 basic possibilities, but even more if you think of starting that idea on ANY of those 16ths. This will not only expand your vocabulary ( with one idea as your starting point) but allows you to shape that idea to SERVE THE MUSIC. If you took 1 simple idea and worked on displacing it, playing it in different rates, in different time signatures, different dynamics etc you´ll be amazed at how much you can grow and how much deeper your rhythmic understanding gets. Thanks for your videos Gabe, keep it up!
