Im 18 been playing for years. Im going to get the iron cobra 600 double. I had a used one but the left pedal was like sticking my foot in a bucket of shit. Im a single bass drum enthusiast but im turning to the dark side after years. As long as the left feels similar to the right in speed and power for the pedal, im all for it. Any tips on sings to start off on?

@@dylanbaldwin7934 play slowly and work your way up. what I did was start at something slow like 60-70 bpm and do 16ths for 5-10 minutes. then go up, and up. you should also work on control like playing triplets and hertas on your feet (or whatever a blast of three notes is called)

Awesome tutorial! I primarily play rock and Jazz-fusion but have recently auditioned for a semi-professional band and landed the gig cause they liked my overall playing and my technique/speed and control in my hands. However my left foot had some trouble(I have played double kick before but I'm not that fast) so now I really just try to practice to get up in the control and speed I need for this band.

Cool! I’ve just started really working on my double bass and I have been using exercises very similar to your first two. I am looking forward to trying out the third exercise. I have gone from playing 1/4 notes at 150 bpm to 250 bpm in about a week. I have been practicing 1 to 1.5 hrs a day and run 3-5km a day with a weighted pack, which helps. I have used double bass before, but never worked on anything more than very short (and sloppy) bursts.

Hi Gabe, nice video. I really love your drumming tutorials :) One question: You are playing double base with heal up, so one of the pedals ist alsways pressing against the bassdrum while the other one is hitting it. Doesn’t that impair the sound? I was always told to get the pedal immediately back. But that make it almost impossible to play heal up imo. I would be interested in your opinion about this :) Thanks so much, keep up the great work!

Nice Presentation, Man. I am just a resurrected , Recreational Drummer . I'm 69 YO, and resumed this Pleasure of playing drums (always loved drumming), after a 51 Year Hiatus from my HS Buddies Garage band in 1966-69. We learned our instruments as went along, Never left the Garage. I'm enticed by the double bass pedal, just got one (Mapex). I am having difficulty with the placement next to the HiHat pedal. Do you folks out there , shift your left foot from the Hi Hat to the slave bass pedal? I find that very difficult to do. I was thinking that this double pedal would help me to provide those double bass strokes easily . I have some Physical issues / disabilities form spinal stenosis that limits speed with my pedal pushes. Was I a little over the top getting this? I only play drums to MY Music in my Finished Basement Studio - created during 2020 COVID Hibernation: CCR, Petty, Clapton, Stones, Beatles, Huey Lewis, Mellencamp, Ronstadt (you will be surprised how Good she was and her Studio Band ), etc...... No metal , just Solid Rock and Roll. Of course, No Baker, Moon, Bonham, (RIP all of them). I was originally "enticed" by DFouble Bass drums by the Ginger Man and the Moon Man. The end of Cream's White Room in circa 1968 did it for Me - when Baker starts playing Double Bass drums....

I'm just now getting into a double bass pedal and this is a great exercise. I'm an old-style rudimental swing drummer getting back into it after 33 years, and I'm not as fleet of foot as I used to be (with my trusty Ludwig Speed King bass pedal I could actually do "Wipe Out" with my one foot on the bass), so I figured I could make up for it with a double bass pedal. I've actually been practicing the rudiments with my feet and also noticed right away that my left foot is quite weak. Thank you for these suggested exercises. I know they will be a help.

But it seems like I'm always dragging the 16th notes. Coming out my attempt with the 16th notes i lose track of the click. I use a metronome and I start at 60 and I lose it around 150, mostly because my balance seems to wane. Any help would be appreciated.

Just got mine, have spent the first few months only using heel down with my single pedal - mainly focusing on jazz too, so the left foot is stronger than I figured. I have my tension somewhat loose, kind of unsure if I need to adjust it per song/genre, or if I can keep a happy medium to play all styles - without sacrificing kick speed! Any advice is helpful!!

Thank you for sharing this video. After the numerous other bass drum videos I've watched trying to increase speed and control, this one actually helped. I've been playing the drums for 20+ years and always slacked on my double bass. I was never taught the correct way to practice. This technique works. I've been doing it since it was posted and already see improvement in my control.

Don't know if anyone is still reacting to comments here, but I noticed that your slave beater is positioned lower/shorter. Do you do this to compensate for the added rotational mass of the drive shaft and u-joints? Or am I completely overthinking this? I've had a terrible time getting the right and left to feel the same on my double pedals regardless of brand.

You can even see his right leg has more ankle movement then his left cos he’s used to doing that. I’m trying to learn heel toe Rn and it’s blood hard to get my left leg consistent cos I can move my ankle as well

How do you get that Sweet, muted bass drum sound? Do you have a video where you show what heads you use and how to tune it to get that great sound?
