There is not a single chance in the universe that I'd be ever able to count the time on this, but I *love* it, what a vibe and what a groove!
@robinjohnson6301Ай бұрын
Try thinking of it as a bar of 4/4 and a bar of 5/8 alternating. You might find counting isn't as hard as you think if you approach it that way.
@evanjazzistaАй бұрын
@@robinjohnson6301 Thank you for your answer, Robin! Game changer. That's such a piece of advice right there, it did help me! Nevertheless, I now be able to count the time for the first one or two bars, but I don't think I'd be able to keep it, let alone with guys like them, or even make it sound musical per se. And we know too well that if you lose yourself in such a context, you're dead. They keep tricking each other rhythmically, and even Chris Clark (formerly of Brand X, no less) is humbled by their level. I can play in 7, in 11, but for some reason I can't play in 5. Go figure! 😂 Thanks again, man! 🙏

@@evanjazzista also, if you think this is difficult, look up Drummers of The Balkan. That's next level of insane alternating time signatures at insane tempos.
@mikeb598Ай бұрын
@@geevee7823check out Virgil’s tune Eleven in, guess what? 11. But he doesn’t have a steady pulse going. There is so much open space and air that you REALLY have to know what’s up.
@WilliamAmelang20 күн бұрын
Marco Minneman had a great lesson on hearing the “Pulse” of an odd time signature so you won’t count it any more than you count to 3 or 4, you begin to just feel it. Every 5/8 rhythm is felt as a 2+3 or 3+2. (Vocal pedagogy helps this a lot. TA-ki TA-ki-ta vs TA-ki-ta TA-ki. Just practice saying those phrases with the emphasis in both places and you will start to feel the pulse!)

As Frank Zappa put it: Polyrhythms sound great when they are played on top of a steady rhythm, either actual or implied. Otherwise it becomes rubato. And that's the problem with Virgil's playing that I have :-) It sounds like rubato or random notes to me, because I can't hear the basic rhythm, even if it's a odd time signature, in his playing. But to keep time is the first job of a drummer :-) That's why I did not like Holdsworths playing with him. Virgil did not give the music solid rhythmic ground, on which the soloist like Allan could play. To me it sounded like the music is falling apart.
@peterdog875425 күн бұрын
Couldn’t agree more. From a technical and skill standpoint, this is otherworldly playing. From a musical standpoint, it’s complete garbage. I love his drumming but can’t listen to this “music”

@ but seriously, Virgil is one of very few drummers out there that is doing his own unique thing and not too many others can sound like him or duplicate his parts. That is very difficult to do as a musician. I would’ve loved to seen what Virgil could’ve done if he played with Frank Zappa he would’ve easily been one of Zappa‘s bestdrummers
