Fun fact, not only was this done in one take, it was also the first take.

as far as I know it was actually the first time he played that song ever

Garstka can play any style impeccably. I think he's the best new/modern drummer in the game right now. Thanks for the video!

Glad you enjoyed it! If you wanna check out more he's got even crazier songs: Gordian Naught, Monomyth, Microaggressions, etc. etc.
@linkreadermusic2 жыл бұрын
I can check those out, but what are your other favorite bands/songs other than Animals as Leaders?
@TheSilenceIsBroken12 жыл бұрын
@@linkreadermusic If you like more melodic-type prog with more memorable guitar licks and melodies (without sacrificing stellar grooves, ghost notes, and completely unnecessary but over-appreciated drum fills) I’d recommend 1) Intervals (specifically 5-HTP, Sure Shot, and my personal favorite Lock & Key) and 2) Plini (Perfume, I’ll tell you someday, and Impulse Voices) Also, Physical Education is arguably the most melodic song they have. Literally everyone sings the chorus at their live shows (I saw them last year and can attest to it) and it’s amazing. Enjoy bro!

Don't feel bad, I'm probably 20 years older than you and I've listened to Dream Theater for over half my life so I thought I knew about time signatures Etc. But this band still baffles me, I imagine that they are probably writing this music while inside some kind of sensory depravation chamber.

Hell, I've been trying to learn AAL covers for 10 years, and I'm still completely baffled lol.

I remember Matt talking in some interview of lesson (maybe Drumeo?) that his weak point used to be his ghost notes. Then he desided to work on them and now we have this. It's a great lesson. His ghost notes are noticeably tight.

It's hard to even imagine that he has a weak point now lol

There was a time, long ago, when animals as leaders did focus on musicality and not just technical boundary pushing, while still being expert musicians. Some hummers are another year and crescent from their joy of motion album. The last two of their albums are for the long time fans who know of their technique.

Interesting! I'll have to check one of those out.

@@calvinwendland8373 agree this album is way less melody and way more taking my SATs the whole time lol. That being said it’s still Animals and I love it all the same. Joy of Motion is a masterpiece though
@PhoenixDecim2 жыл бұрын
I think Joy of Motion was the most melodic of them all. It's the one album I go back and listen to every once in a while

You're so right in saying there's no "hook". Technically proficient for sure. I will see Matt this Friday in concert, my concern is that I will grow tired toward the end of the performance of AAL from the driving non commercial if you will style of music. Again, amazing professional musicians but sometimes you need that sing along catchy type tunes...I could be wrong!! On the other hand, I grew up listening to Neil Peart since a child and I'm looking for something new now since his passing...

I saw them a few ago with Devin Townsend and Dream Theater. Honestly both Animals as Leaders and Dream Theater were pretty mechanical at this point. Heavy Devy saved the show!

it just means you don't like prog music, which is totally fine. the genre is for people that like to dig a little deeper. there are a lot of melodies and grooves but they're layered in complexity. you have to sit down and dedicate time into "figuring it out" so to speak. then after that you can enjoy the music casually.

Think of them as jazz fusion based, not metal or rock based. Animals as Leaders is crack cocaine for prog and fusion listeners ❤
