A long time fan from down here in Australia. One of the best rock bands that I've ever heard in my 65 orbits around the Sun. And I've grown up & seen a lot of the greats since the early 70's. The main reason that a lot of us old blokes love these bands from Japan, is that they bring back the 'essence' of all those old sounds we grew up with. Sounds that have been missing from mainstream music for the last three decades.

I live in Austin, TX and saw Band-Maid live back in May and they were incredible live, sound was perfect and they were having so much fun. Their beauty is even more stunning in person and their smiles are so infectious. I recommend songs like Domination (live), Hate? (Live at Lollapolooza), Puzzle (live), Shambles, Blooming, Warning, Choose Me, Unleash, Onset, anything they have is awesome, just so many great songs!!

So many of their songs are different that it's not simple to put them in a genre. They are not so much Metal as they are Hard Rock with a Punk influence. There are three songs they did in 2020 in their World Domination Tour that are worth seeing. All are on their channel and called "Official Live Video" (much better than their studio "Music Video" choices). "Freedom" shows just how much fun they have performing. Everybody is so happy. And there is an excellent drum solo. "Play" is also very good, with an interesting (for drummers at least) moment where she switches from hitting the skins to hitting the rims for a short bit. And "Domination" is the title song of the tour. This live performance, unlike the studio version and most of their other live shows, includes (fairly short) solos of every instrument.

Great commentary and reaction. The rhythm guitarist, backup vocalist, lyricist and band founder Miku Kobato is playing her own beautiful signature model A24MF-FP Zemaitis Guitar she helped design named the "Flappy Pigeon" during the first song Manners and then she switched to the Aces and Eights Zemaitis for Black Hole. All the members of Band-Maid are extraordinary in their own right and work seamlessly together to make incredible great music.
@Davey-Boyd Жыл бұрын
There is an interesting story behind "Black Hole". According to Akane, Kanami asked her how fast she could drum. Akane said around 190 bpm. Then Kanami went off and wrote "Black Hole" that peaks at 220 bpm! So Akane goes and writes the drum patterns for the track. She wrote 7, for the band to choose which one. She labelled them: 1. Easy 2. Comfortable 3. Normal 4. Possible if I work hard 5. Tough 6. Painfull 7. Hell Akane said "Of course, the band chose Hell"! (ps I'm from the UK)
@glenkelley6799 Жыл бұрын
When they appeared with Herman Li (Dragon Force) on his YT channel, Kanami asked Herman what their fastest song was and Herman said 230BPM, Kanami then said she'd like to write one at 240BPM. Not sure what Akane though about that.

May 2021 Player Magazine Interview with Akane - This time the last song BLACK HOLE had a great impact. In your previous album, Rinne was awesome, though… Akane: I felt like “Finally this came!” (laughs) - Finally you played this. I wonder what you will do in the future… Akane: I wonder too (laughs). - Was it originally like this in the demo? Akane: Yes. I had to keep kicking (the bass drum) longer, but it had many parts a human can’t play, so I modified it within the range of a human drummer, and it’s still like this. As for the last bass drum pattern, I made seven or eight patterns, and they were like “Names like ‘1’, ‘2’, ‘3’ are not easy to get, so name them according to your level”, so I actually named them like “Easy, Comfortable, Normal, Possible if I work hard, Tough, Painful, Hell”, and they chose “Hell” (laughs). It’s the phrase named “Hell”. - (laughs) However, didn’t you expect them to definitely choose “Hell”? Akane: Yes, I expected. I was prepared for it. I was sure they wouldn’t choose “Easy”. And this is why many of us love these Ladies. They constantly strive to be better to give us their fans good music and they never rest on their laurels. Always challenging themselves, and always meeting those challenges. Saiki has a sponsorship through Sennheiser if my memory is correct. Or she/the whole band did. They recently switched to a new wireless microphone system, and I don't know if it's a Sennheiser rig or not. And in the past Akane was sponsored by Sakae and Sonor before going with Tama.

That 220 BPM final flourish on BLACK HOLE came as a result of Kanami, the lead guitarist and main song composer, asking Akane what her limit was. Akane probably replied "18 bananas and lots of ramen" until Kanami explained she meant her limit on the drums, at which Akane took up the challenge. Gotta recommend FREEDOM kzbin.info/www/bejne/fHnTpningqaWesk as Akane has her longest drum solo in it, live! By the way, there are lyrics on the cc button on all their MV's over the past 3 or 4 years on their YT channel, including on the ones from this live streamed gig.

This "live" version of Manners is probably my favorite song by them, but Thrill (the song that saved them from oblivion) is the first one I heard and hooked me. Onset is a great instrumental example. I'm pretty sure Keith Moon was reincarnated as a girl from Hyogo, Japan named Hirose Akane. I'm 68 and living in Tennessee, and, as someone mentioned below, their work reminds me of the rock giants that came before. Rock is alive and well, living in Japan. Check out some of the other bands there. the pillows are old school, and Baby Metal is a quirky version of metal rock. Mrs. Green Apple, Scandal, and many more. Go down the rabbit hole, I think you'll like it!

Thank you for your reaction and welcome to the Unseen World, the name of the fantasic album. My musical journey with the maids started with the MV for Manners and I think few other songs could have been as perfect for me at the time, maybe dice, as I come from a more softer style of music (think more like Pink Floyd or Peter Gabriel). As for Black Hole it is imho a master piece but it toke something about 20 listen to grasp it, now I love it but I can understand if not everyone does. I prefer to listen to Band Maid per album so it is always hard to suggest a single song but the mv for Blooming would do. Have fun! :)

As for the next song, there are some that just work best from the official studio videos ( Don't You Tell Me) but for the most part, their live videos really highlight the reason this band is one of the best in the last 30 years (IMHO). You can start by going back to some of their older releases and build towards their newest (Shambles, release Aug.4th). They also have some killer instrumentals (Onset, From Now On).

Saiki (lead singer)- Previously, from c2010, a photographic model, actress- film and stage, singer/dancer in backing groups and finally Lead singer in Band-Maid. When Miku (backing singer/Guitar/Red rose) was forming the band in mid 2013, she decided after a few shows, that her voice alone was not going to be enough for the band sound. So found Saki, who was acting on stage at the time but was also signed to their same agency. On 22 August 2013 they made their first performance as all five members. Their progression since, as a group and individual musicians has been incredible, pushed along by Kanami's (Lead Guitar) ever impressive compositions and arrangements culminating in the land mark album Unseen World in 2021.

I'm a Maidiac from Ohio. After a while you stop trying to classify Band-Maid. You'll hear elements of Classic Rock, Punk, Prog, Pop, Metal, Rap, Fusion, Jazz, Broadway show tune influences, and whatever insanity they discuss while conjuring up song ideas. Chase Carneson simply calls it "Band-Maid doing Band-Maid things". They will surprise you nearly every time. Band-Maid has a wry sense of humor that they weave into their concerts. "Manners" was an experiment in song writing, the result of analyzing current hit rock songs and attempting to combine elements of them into their composition. Not long after releasing that album, Kanami vowed to stop listening to other bands. (Huh?) I believe "Black Hole" was written after Kanami and Miku were interviewed by Herman Li of DragonForce and Herman inspired Kanami to write a song upwards of 220 bpm! You've reacted to "Dice - Different" live and "Puzzle" live at Tokyo Garden Theater. Great songs and performances. Try "Dice - HATE?" at Lollapalooza 2023. Akane Hirose's drums are the connective tissue that ties the Bass/Guitar duels together and you can tell they're all having the time of their lives. Try a few of their instrumentals: "Onset", "From Now On", "Without Holding Back" Their Line Cube Shibuya live trilogy: "Domination", "Play", and "Freedom" are high energy. See what you think of wildly experimental "Giovanni" or when they dipped their toes into Japanese folk metal with "Gion-Cho" and "Secret Maiko Lips" But sometimes Band-Maid can be at their most powerful when they slow things down: "Daydreaming", "Wonderland", "Endless Story", "About Us". A few of my favorites: "Moratorium", "Cross", "Warning", "Rinne", "No God", "Alone", "Forward"

Not just about. They can play anything, but they don't. If you watch an instrumental like 'Without Holding Back' or 'From Now On' you'll see BAND-MAID could play more technical stuff like Aldious or the Kami Band does, but they don't. Those are just opportunities to show off, and the instrumentals gives them that. But BAND-MAID has real songs. Tono & Kobato are Hit Machines as much as Lennon & McCartney were. I can only listen to Technician Fireworks for so long before I stop being impressed and want to hear a song that makes me feel something. That's what BAND-MAID has in songs like 'Daydreaming'. Go to the Instrumental Maid Channel for their technical prowess, but then watch a song like 'About Us' where they are sing to you the fan directly. That's more powerful than any technical wizardry.
