Different and very interesting. Take your time dissecting the lyrics .From Songs From the Wood you ought to react to Hunting Girl. It will amaze you.

Yeah, huge Tull fan here. Loved all of their stuff from 68 to 79. From This Was with Abrams to Stormwatch. Their early 80s stuff, for me, was horrible. Their music did not recover, again, my opinion, until 87 with Crest of A Knave.

The last good Tull album from an amazing run (1969-1982). The electronics are well balanced with the more traditional instrumentation. They went full electronic with the following album (Under Wraps) and Ian lost his voice. Still good songs to discover on Broadsword, but Heavy Horses and Songs From The Wood are a good notch above.

This album was on heavy rotation for me back in the days and I still come back to it. The songwriting here is excellent and I really dig the arrangements and sound, especially the vocal productions with the vocoder and the keys. The mood is quite mysterious as well, which I love, especially on the opener Beastie and the title track. BUT as much as I love this album, the album preceding this one is a TULL MASTERPIECE - that you have to get into! "A" (1980) was supposed to be Ian's first solo album (title is referring to the master tapes marked with just the letter A for Anderson) but ended up being a Jethro Tull album. And WHAT AN ALBUM 😍. Now we're talking dark, moody and almost sinister stuff. Listen to the classic (and live favourite from that area) BLACK SUNDAY. Hell, you can listen to any track here, it's pure gold from start to end. Big vocoder harmonies, lots of flute, amazing piano, fuzz-violin and rhythmic awesomeness around every corner! YOU WILL LOVE IT!

Great album throughout, the problem with single tracks is that "Clasp" is supposed to blend seamlessly into "Fallen on Hard Times". Actually the whole side should be played through....

I’m pretty sure that you would love Stormwatch 1979. My favorite songs are Old Ghosts and Flying Dutchman, the whole album is such a mix of different styles of music within the songs. Listen and enjoy!

This was planned to be a double album, then the record company nixed it. There's a good hour's worth of other songs and they're almost all brilliant. "Jack-A-Lynn" is stunning.
@coast737 ай бұрын
I didn't know that, I just assumed they were tracks that were cut from the album. Theres a Steven Wilson remix of jack a Lynn on the 2018 Heavy Horses reissue which Is also brilliant, i think the song works better without the 80s sounding production. Still great either way though
@IchsehmirFilmean4 ай бұрын
It wasn't planned as double album. They just recorded song after song for two years and had songs for at least 3 albums finished or nearly finished.

This album has a darkish Celtic/Viking vibe to it. But still laced with lots of upbeat music that creates an interesting contrast. Martin Barre's in fine form. The highlight for me is his guitar solo on Seal Driver. Flying Colours is another great song. But the whole album is consistent and strong.

The solo on Seal Driver Is incredible and if you listen to the bass line under that solo is unbelievable

For me, this is a great album sandwiched between two very weak Tull offerings ("A" and, bottom of the heap, "Under Wraps"). It's the one on which the 80s synths work best IMO, and it's one of the albums that really make me want to pick the 15-year window from '68 to '82 as my go-to era rather than just "the 70s". Bassist Dave Pegg is the artist I've seen live most often, with Tull and his other band, Fairport Convention (also home to Gerry Conway for 24 years). I saw Fairport again last year and mentioned to Dave that I'd been coming to see him for over 40 years, to which he replied, "blimey, you've kept your hair well"! 🤣

Broadsword is a good album and is worth a listen but I think you should stick with heavy horses/ songs from the wood. they're way more interesting musically, thematically and are less commercialized.

I love Tull Tuesdays! I think your Tull reaction videos would be even more fun if you started reacting to the studio version of a song, and then watched a video of a live performance of the same song. For "Clasp" I would recommend this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hpLHh4mCgp2qmas

Really good song with an 80s touch. This would have been a great album, in my opinion, if half the original songs were replaced by the same number (or pop in a couple more) of the bonus tracks.
@TheRKae7 ай бұрын
I LOVE this song! I like how every verse is produced differently with varied approaches to the background music and the vocals. There's suddenly a little "chunka-chunka" metal guitar bit, then it zooms off into something else. There are "tin can" vocals, then it's suddenly something else. So many ideas packed into one arrangement. Also: that ultra cool opening and closing of the spooky keyboards!

The only Tull album not produced (or co-produced) by Ian Anderson...producer Paul Samwell-Smith....produced many early Cat Stevens' albums. Always felt this album was too over produced and very commercial. Followed Tull since 1972...but Broadsword and The Beast has never resonated.
@tullfan25607 ай бұрын
I agree this album was well-produced and trimmed, like the songs were to fit into a pre-sized box, which is most unlike Jethro Tull. But the musicianship is top-notch and so precise, which compensates for that. Plus, the eclectic mix of instrumentation is a repellant to this album being considered to be too commercial. As an aside, I read somewhere that Steve Hackett likes this album.

I would suggest the title track Broadsword. Also Pibroach cap in hand from Songs from the woods. An excellent track that is a wild ride with all of the twist and turns! You won't be disappointed!

Thanks Lee! Can't believe I missed it going out! :D It is a very different type of Tull for sure from the early days. The first track on the album, Beastie, is a good meaty one :D I would gladly hear more from Heavy Horses for now. Plenty of time to get into more from this one x

Gerry Conway, was one of Tulls most plain Drummers. Barrymore Barlow was the BEST. But I must say, Doane Perry was a very close second.

Broadsword is a great album, often overlooked by fans. "Flying Colours" is about domestic quarrels that go public.
@lemming99847 ай бұрын
When it released it was the first album I'd ever bought on Cassette rather than vinyl. It came on superior quality Chrome tape and had an attractive 'blown' case, rather than the usual hard plastic. Great sounding album all round. I have a standard CD reissue with another albums worth of songs which are as good as the ones on the album. It could easily have been a double album.
@corawheeler93557 ай бұрын
@@lemming9984 Ian is such a prolific writer. They had recorded 15 songs, but Ian only kept 2 for this album. The rest showed up years later on an anniversary album. Two great Broadsword outtakes are .. Overhang, and, Jack-a-Lynn

Go further , go deeper , play on till dawn !
