Early in Bonnie Raitt's career, she did backup vocals for Little Feat, and their singer/guitarist Lowell George helped her develop her slide guitar sound by using compressors for sustain. Lowell used to play with the early Mothers of Invention, and Roy Estrada told him he had little feet - so that's where the name came from.

I spent the longest time thinking that Keith Moon was my favorite drummer of all time. Then someone turned me on to Little Feat and I began hearing the work of Feat drummer, the late, great Richie Hayward. Later Richie and I became great friends. He died of cancer over 10 years ago and I still miss him. Give Waiting For Columbus a full listen. It's considered one of the top 5 live albums of all times to this day.

Richie died the day before (as far as I remember - certainly during the week) Little Feat were due to play at Fairport Covention's Cropredy Festival here in the UK. I had seen the Feat in '74 & '76 but not since, and assumed they'd pull out of the festival. Not only did they play, but they PLAYED. Every bit as good as the 70s shows, and I am not so sure there are many bands you could say that about. Richie woulda approved, I am sure.
@gr8fullytedicated9 ай бұрын
@@martinstarnes2237 Richiue had been "retired" for a while because of the cancer. His drum roadie became the drummer for Feat during that time, so that's who you saw at your show. The band made a special trip up to British Columbia a while before he passed so they could do one more show with him.

It's too bad that this was your introduction to Little Feat. You've got the badly mixed and criminally cut down version of "Dixie Chicken" where you can't even hear Bonnie and EmmyLou and "Fat man" where Lowell George sounds like he is waking up after crashing from a speedball. There are kind of two Little Feats from the Lowell days - the studio version and the live version. To my taste, the studio recordings are a bit underwhelming compared to live where they really open things up. For live, the very best are cuts from the "Waiting for Columbus" double album. It's well mixed and carefully curated from a few concerts. It shows their full range and they really show their stuff. Live videos are great to see Lowell and his playful antics on stage (after he died, his good friend Bonnie Raitt said she missed him like she missed being 8 years old). If you want a stage video, I would suggest ones from the Rockplast concert. I think there are some that put that audio from "Columbus" on the Rockplast video, not exactly sure. Dixie Chicken tells a really fun story and this version cut 2 versus so you totally lose that. On Columbus it goes right into "Tripe Face Boogie" which is a wild ride with totally nonsensical lyrics with the message that you should just boogie all night long, lol. They should be played together if possible. And yes, Ritchie Hayward is a monster on drums!

Bonnie and EmmyLou were singing, but we couldn't hear them, due to a bad sound mix on the TV show. I think their mic wasn't turned on. Pity. Also, that was only about half of the song "Dixie Chicken", effing Midnight Special. The "Fat Man In The Bathtub" video was shot at about 9:30 a.m., it was the only time Little Feat was available on their tour. Even though the band sounds like they are from New Orleans, they are an L.A. band. Roy Estrada was the original Bass player on the first two albums, then Kenny Gradney took over, a New Orleans native. Lowell George was an original member of The Mothers Of Invention, til Frank told him to go form his own band, when Lowell brought Frank the song "Willin' ". Check out their LIVE album "Waiting For Columbus", it is a classic. Got to see Feat with Lowell one time, totally amazing show.

First of all, you need to set a block of time and listen to the whole album Waiting For Columbus. That performance was done just before Lowell George died. (sadly, his son Forrest George just died a week or so ago). This is Feat at it's finest. They were such a great band! Lowell George used to play with Frank Zappa. He wrote a song called Willin' and played it for Frank. He said it was a great song, but not for his band. So he fired George and set him up with a recording deal (Frank could be a nice guy). Roy Estrada was a bass player and played with Frank since his first band before the Mothers. He is is currently incarcerated in the Texas State Prison System. He was convicted for sex offenses on at least three occasions between 1977 and 2012. He will not be eligible for release until 2037, at which time he will potentially be between 93 and 94 years old. On the Live In NY album, at the end of Illinois Enema Bandit, Frank dedicates a little ditty to Roy Estrada, wherever he is.
