Thank you to our patron Scott for another winner. This was great! Very mellow and laid back love song... that happens to be about loving his father. Once looked at through that lens, the song takes on a whole new meaning...

Bread (which was a slang word for money back then) was a very popular band with many hits. "The Guitar Man" is one of my favorites. "If" is one of the greatest love songs ever written, and yet if doesn't have a chorus, it's a gorgeous, wonderfully poetic verse that sounds like it's always been out there in the ethers, just waiting to be heard. Bread is one of the top "Soft" Rock bands. I love them! And that's coming from a Yes/Rush/Led Zeppelin fan. ❤✌

Probably won't get the views... however this song reminds me of my Dad especially with Father's day coming this Sunday as we lost him to Alzheimer's almost 6 years ago after a horrific battle by him against it. I dedicate it to him and all others who've lost a parent as they're simply irreplaceable.❤

i can agree with that sentiment, my friend. That's what I get to eventually in the recap. I miss my dad so much, I've talked to him out loud since he passed in 03 and every once in a while I feel his presence. It's very rare, sadly. But every couple years I swear he shows up to comfort me when i'm at my lowest.

@@L33Reacts I'm getting close to 79, but I've had a ton of 'family souls' looking out for me for years. My maternal grandfather, a WWI vet, passed in 1971 when I was a mere lad of 26. He and I had a special connection - he was the 'go to' adult male when I was growing up, and always gave me the best advice and solutions to any problem. My mother died in 2008 at almost 88 years old, and I know she's still looking out for me. These two, and many others, are 'absent' yet 'present', and continue to show up just when their needed most.

Incredible song. Everybody does Bread's ballads, and granted they're amazing thanks to David Gates and the others, but I'd love it if somebody would do some of their uptempo numbers, which are every bit as well-crafted and enjoyable: "Let Your Love Go," "Down on My Knees," "Mother Freedom," and "Make It By Yourself" are just a few of them. And if you want to hear something really special, check out David Gates' eight-minute version of his "Clouds/Rain" suite. One of the best songs of the seventies that nobody knows about. Keep up the great work! Really enjoy your reactions. You always have some excellent insights into the music you listen to.

Great reaction, Joel. The band is one of my very favorites. You might enjoy their first single, "Make It With You," released in the summer of 1970. The group can also display a much rockier edge on tunes such as "Mother Freedom," by James Griffin. I know you would love that tune. 👍

Bread (aka David Gates and Bread), along with The Carpenters, were kinda the sound of "Soft Rock" of the early to mid-70's. They both can bring a tear to my eyes in a New York minute. You would do well to listen to more of Bread, and I would love to hear you listen to a few songs by The Carpenters! Thanks for your efforts.

I too lost my father at a young age - I was 8. I can say to this day (and I'm a senior citizen) I still think of him almost daily. I remember hearing this song and other songs from Bread on the radio so often and had one of their albums. It definitely makes one think of relationships, whether they be romantic ones or about family/friends, and what is truly important in those relationships. I love that songs from my generation are resurfacing and being appreciated. However, I recognize my own bias and I don't know much about current music. I remember in my youth, so many songs seemed to relate to love and coming together. Today the music I do hear sounds so different. Can the young people here tell me what they think in comparing songs of different generations and what songs of today I need to listen to? I want to try to understand it all. Thanks and blessings to all. Love your reactions L33Reacts.

"Make It With You", wrtten by Bread frontman David Gates (vocals, bass guitar, guitar, keyboards, violin, viola, percussion) was Bread's first and only #1 hit on the US Billboard singles chart in August 1970. The group followed up this hit with another Gates ballad, the Top 10 hit, "It Don't Matter To Me". When the Gates ballad "If" then climbed to #4 in the Spring of 1971, it became more obvious that Bread was going to be primarily associated with soft rock. This assumption was further justified by the poorer showing of the group's follow-up single to "If", the Gates-written hard rocker "Mother Freedom", which stalled at #37. Of course, Bread quickly recovered with the Gates ballad "Baby, I'm A Want You", which rose to #3 that Fall. In 1972, Robb Royer (bass guitar, guitar, flute, keyboards, percussion, recorder, backing vocals), left Bread, and his permanent replacement was Larry Knechtel, who you know was a famous Los Angeles session keyboardist. Knechtel seemed to be instrumental in taking the group in an edgier direction. Bread went on to have five more US Top 20 hits in quick succession with "Everything I Own" (#5) and "Diary" (#15), "The Guitar Man" (#11), "Sweet Surrender" (#15) and "Aubrey" (#15). By 1973, fatigue from constant recording and touring had set in despite the band's success, and personal relationships began to show strain, especially between David Gates and Jimmy Griffin (vocals, guitar, keyboards, percussion). All eleven of Bread's charting singles between 1970 and 1973 had been written and sung by Gates. Griffin had also wrote and sang as many songs for the group as Gates, including most of their more uptempo rockers, such as "Truckin' " and "I Don't Love You." Yet Elektra Records had invariably selected Gates' more melllower songs for the A-sides of the singles, while Griffin felt that the singles should have been split between the two of them.

"Dismal Day" and "London Bridge", the first two songs from Bread's self-titled debut album from 1969, are rather upbeat songs and definitely worth a listen. Dismal Day was their debut single, which they thought would be massive, until it wasn't...still good fun though. 😊

Larry Knechtel was one of those Wrecking Crew guys who made the leap from the studio musician world into the world of touring and playing live, like Glen Campbell and Leon Russell. In Knechtel's case, it was with Bread. BTW I believe David Gates' father was a school band teacher, who in turn inspired David's decision to become a professional musician.

Bread for the most part at least was if you can call such a thing, a chick band. I remember all the females in the groups that I ran with and ultimately now my wife just love bread and I will say this. They're good at what they do, but they were not A group that guys ever listened to, and at least in terms of putting them on a play list or something, Forget it! They just really have a single shtick which I said they do well, but still. Not rock band. You can listen to their songs and then enjoy the musicality and the talent. But when it's said done, you'll never listen to them. But my wife will.
