Cinematic musicianship. Glad you liked it. I knew you would. Love your Bluegrass Mahavishnu Orchestra interp. Hick's version is dramatic but not without humor. While Dolby's captures a more turgid malaise. Striking It Rich is a great album overall.

This is a superb album. It has several excellent tunes that I love: I'm An Old Cowhand (From The Rio Grand), Canned Music, The Walking One And Only, and my absolute favorite, You've Got To Believe. They are all honest-to-goodness, homegrown, toe tapping tunes that give most people the urge to get up and shake it all around the room. One point of interest that you may have overlooked is their lineup doesn't include a drummer-the band is all acoustic. This is true with album and their follow-up LP, Where's The Money. They are the only two Hicks LPs that I know intimately. IMO, the backup vocals (courtesy of The Licketts: Maryann Price and Naomi Einsenberg) were invaluable members and were a huge reason why the band gained notoriety. I'm not sure if you noticed, but the album cover is designed to resemble a match book which, of course, is related to the title of the album, Striking It Rich. What a great idea.

Lee, this made me smile during a bad day. How great is Dan Hicks, I'd forgotten. I remember when he played the Troubadour in LA 1973, it was a legendary show. Sarcastic, swinging hippie bluegrass music from SF. Where's The Money is a favorite of mine from the great album of the same name.

I saw Dan Hicks back in the early ’70s. I like him a lot. Unfortunately his opening act was the then unknown Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. After Bruce was done the audience just kind of wandered away. I stayed but I don’t really remember much about the show. Talk about a hard act to follow.
@johnsilva91394 ай бұрын
Yeah, I went to see David Bromberg and Bruce was the opener ( I think his first album just came out ). And again most of audience left after Bruce played. I was there for Bromberg and thought Bruce was just a punk. Still don't like him.

I am so glad you finally have played Thomas Dolby, he's one of my absolute favorites ever. He was part of the initial New Wave movement and I've always felt he was the most human of the electronic artists. If you'd like to check out another song from him, I Love You Goodbye is absolutely amazing. He pairs electronics with New Orleans zydeco musicians and it's absolutely phenomenal!

Hicks was one of the great musical treasures of the '70s - good on you!!!! Your credits were wrong: Vocals: Maryann Price & Naomi Eisenberg; Guitar: John Girton. But "Symphony" Sid was the violinist. This piece Is arguably the peak in Hicks catalogue of "folk swing". (Try "Canned Music" for a song concerning a drummer!)
@tdgallagher2184 ай бұрын
Yes, right you are about the credits. I intended to leave a comment as well until I read yours. Lee's info was based on the original Dan Hicks and his Hot Licks LP, released in 1969. This recording was obviously from the Striking It Rich LP. Always loved the harmonies from the Licketts.

I went to Dolby’s tour for the Album this song was on called the Flat Earth and to this day I’ll say it was one of the best live music shows I’ve ever been to And that for me is saying something Because I’ve seen Parliament Funkadelic land the Mothership Connection on stage, James Brown, the Clash, Lou Reed, Prince’s 1999 tour, the Jackson’s with Michael on their Triumph 1980 tour, Rick James on his Street songs tour and Miles Davis all incredible performances But Dolby is right there with all of them Perhaps it depends one which version you heard first Because I never heard Hick’s original but for me Dolby’s cover blows the original away!!! That might also have to do with the Album it’s on the Flat Earth is incredible top to bottom

As great as they were musically, Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks were singular in performance...strange Panama or Cuban backdrops, , Naomi and Maryann dancing and weaving harmonies; you felt transported back to the '30s or '40s in a seriously underground nightclub or speakeasy. A friend saw them in a show double billed with Country Joe and the Fish...the Fish were late and Dan Hicks went on first. They did Country Joe's whole set and then split, a great joke that I'm not sure Country Joe appreciated;) More Dan Hicks, and while I mention it MORE Country Joe! Electric Music for Mind and Body, not a bad cut, try Porpoise Mouth or Super Bird or anything else;)

"Making that thing sing bro" -Lee when hearing Symphony Sid playing scary good violin. Wasn't that song awesome? The best western swing band I've ever heard man. Bluegrass Mahavishnu is so right on Lee. I Scare Myself I always thought has a gypsy feel, like gypsy jazz by Django Reinhardt. A really well crafted song- so much mileage out of an Em - F phrase. Thomas Dolby's version is very good also. I Scare Myself is such good material to sculpt your vision. Actually I'm really impressed. She Blinded Me With Science was all I knew of Thomas Dolby before. He has no relation to Dolby Laboratories. Your kid is great- don't mind seeing her at all bro. Original Recordings has many great tunes. You should maybe try Canned Music, Shorty Falls In Love, Shorty Takes A Dive, Slow Movin', and Waiting For the 103 (has a great choo choo train rhythm). Excellent pick Shiverhinge. Cheers!
