Quicksand is a masterpiece. An early indicator of his genius.

Couldn’t agree more- I’ve owned the album for 50 years - quicksand choked me up every time- it will be played at my service

Hunky Dory sounded like nothing like it at the time. It's still a singular masterpiece.

I agree! So far it has some of my favorite songs of his. Some are better than others but that’s just how it goes. The piano and strings are just spectacular.

It sounds just like The Kinks which is cool.

Kooks was simply a perfect song of hope and joy to a new child - and look how the kid turned out: a brilliant film director. Result! Quicksand: awesome. Fill your heart? Hell yes! I was born with rock and roll, raised on The Beatles and spent my working life as a musician; David soundtracked my adult life and I can die happy because of it. Keep the torch burning, young Lee.

David and Angie were not your usual kind of young couple. They had a baby and I think Kooks reflects how Life changing it was going to be.

We had Kooks playing in the delivery room when my first son was born - the perfect accompaniment. He's now grown up to be an ardent Bowie fan himself, one of my proudest achievements as a father! And Quicksand is... well, I'm pretty sure the word "masterpiece" was invented especially for it!

Fabulous, well done. As a 45-year plus mad Bowie fan, I never quite won my son over, but I am now working on my 4 year old grandson 😂❤

Kooks was the song he wrote for his son who was newly born. Love it.

His son was lumbered with 'Zowie Bowie' at first, and David said to Jonathan Ross (chat show host on British tv) that "Joe is okay now" ...but of course they sorted it out, and now _Duncan Jones_ is in film and directed "Moon" (I think?) ♥️

Not a big Bowie fan in my youth, except for the big radio hits, so all of this is new ground for me. Very much enjoying the education. Thanks Lee.

I was immersed at the time; L33's reaction are still fun. I already know Hunky Dory is a home-run album, but he made quite a few of them from 70-82 or so.

I got a cassette bootleg in the Autumn of 1981 that featured Bowie's first live performance of "Kooks", just days after his son was born. "Hunky Dory" is a Bowie MASTERPIECE. "Quicksand" is IMMORTAL David Bowie. EDIT: My sister & I attended our last David Bowie concert just 8 miles down the road from my house, in Hershey Pennsylvania, in 2004. When David began strumming the opening chords of "Quicksand", my sister & I looked at each other.....and when he sang the opening line "I'm closer to the Golden Dawn", we SLAMMED into each other's arms, our faces instantly wet with tears of joy. Aaaaaaahhhhhh......precious memories.....!!!! 😃

Don't worry not liking some tracks or even whole albums: Bowie was always exploring so not everything is going to be your jam. The experimentation and unpredictability is one of the big charms of Bowie's catalog; fans didn't always love what he was doing, but tagged along just to see what would happen next.

I love Kooks. Such a whimsical song amongst the other more solid tracks on Hunky Dory. Has the same feeling as Teach your Children Well on CSN

I guess it's hard to be both Lennon and McCartney on the same album and not confuse or turn off some listeners. But I think far from searching for himself, this is Bowie in total control of all the modes he wants to utilize for any given song.

As a crazy Bowie fan for a good part of half a century 😮 lol I still get as excited about his music as I did at 16 ..so look forward to these video reactions ❤ Apparently Bowie wrote Kooks for his infant son.Duncan.Then Zowie .

I got the boxed set ‘Divine Symmetry’ last year. This contains all the Hunky Dory sessions, demos plus some live shows he did around the time. I have loved ‘Hunky Dory’ since I started listening to it in 1974 so I had to get it. King of the City, a demo on it, is really an early version of Ashes to Ashes. You also find out what the phone ringing is all about at the end of Life on Mars. This boxed set is well worth listening to and it can be streamed.

Bowie songs I’ve never heard! We believe in you… Sweet, affectionate… You’re gonna be pretty kooky, too ❤️ (It seemed like David’s sweet affection for his son might have struck a chord…After Kooks, when Quicksand began, there was such a deep sigh…)💖

Quicksand is an awesome track! Only rivals to its style are Lady Grinning Soul and MY DEATH from the last Ziggy concert album! Kooks was written for his son, then named Zooey Bowie. Later changed his name n is a filmmaker

This was Bowie's last album before the personas took over, and it's completely earnest and without affectation. Just a great rock album by an artist who was finding his groove. 'Queen Bitch' is really the first song on Ziggy Stardust, imo, we just didn't know it at the time. 'Fill Your Heart' was written by Paul Williams of Phantom of the Paradise fame, which is an interesting footnote. There are many Bowie albums I love, but this one remains my favorite.

Really complex album. David had plenty going on with new Wife,Son and Management. He was already heavily into the music for next Album. Listen to the live BBC sessions - David’s music was shifting quickly - again. Hunky Dory is a heavy thinking album. Keep up the great work.
