Your admiration for Phil is great. In the 80s,the British press, for some reason, totally trashed him. I never understood why. Phil is everything... total musician. Talented beyond normal.

sadly it was because of when he broke up with his second wife in 1993 - the UK press really laid into him. Plus the fact alot of hits were ballads - it really seemed to piss them off! Sad that they didn't see what we see. But I'm happy seeing people discovering the music properly and Phil getting the recognition he deserves

Phil brought a more "joe lunchbox" approach as the frontman or an "every man" approach, whereas Peter was more "the mysterious stranger" regaling the crowd with tales of his travels. Both are legends. And both came out of a legendary band.

I adore Abacab on the Abacab, 3 Sides Live, and Mama tours (and Dodo/Lurker as well). But Abacab was sped up on this leg of the Invisible Touch tour, and it seemed - to my ears anyway - to lose some of its edginess and electricity of the earlier years.

Absolutely Genesis' commercial peak, this was the end of a 10 month world tour that ended being one of the top 10 grossing tours of the 80's. They were an incredibly tight live unit, and Chester Thompson (who also drummed for Frank Zappa and Santana throughout his career) and Daryl Stuermer (who would alternate bass or guitar depending on what Mike preferred to play song by song) were essential components of the live Genesis sound. I was still too young to be going to massive concerts like this at the time, but had the VHS release and played it a ton as a kid. Awesome reaction, and you made some very good points afterwards, thanks.

I was losing interest in new Genesis material by 1984 but they were always FANTASTIC in concert. Chester Thompson and Daryl Stuermer are virtuosos and were mainstays of live Genesis for most of their post-Steve period. Chester was on some of the best Zappa albums and tours, and Daryl's work with former Zappa jazz violinist Jean-Luc Ponty stands on its own. Daryl played some fantastic solos when playing Steve's parts. His solo at the end of "Say It's Alright, Joe" during the 1978 tour is legendary. What a fantastically talented and fascinating band. I love most of the Phil era and am thankful that Peter left to fulfill his visions, both musically and in the world of global social justice, Great reaction, but I'm still hoping for the 1993 live version of "In Your Eyes" by Peter, which might change your life. :)

*Been a Genesis fan since 1998. They played four consecutive sell-out nights at the 80,000-capacity Wembley Stadium in July 1987, which was a record at the time and lasted for five years until Michael Jackson played seven nights. Genesis were likely the biggest musical act on the planet circa 86/87, as in addition to the record-breaking four night run their 1986 Invisible Touch album spawned five Top 5 US singles, including a No.1 in the album title track Invisible touch which topped the US singles chart, while the album topped the UK charts and made No.3 in the US.* *Practically anything from this specific gig is sublime, especially the drum duet into Los Endos and finishing with the remarkable Turn It On Again Medley.*

You gotta do more man Genesis were of course the pioneers of 70s Prog Rock. May I suggest the final suite on Wind And Wuthering entitled Unquiet Slumbers For The Sleepers/In That Quiet Earth/Afterglow which is just off the charts. All their music is superb. First of all... When Genesis(before they did get their name Genesis) started as a group in about 1966, they´re goal was to make popsongs for other artists, before that they emerged from two school bands, The Anon and The Garden Wall. However the songs they made were taken to the music-guru and former artist from same school, Jonathan King (who had a own pop hit in 1965) and saw some talent in these guys, and ultimately gave them the name Genesis, and produced their first album "From Genesis To Revelation". The album did not so well as recordstores put them in the religious section....for obvious reasons... So, they aimed to do pop-songs and failed.... They eventually did something on their own, mainly inspired by other english bands as King Crimson and Van Der Graaf Generator but also with other bands. As time goes by, they found their "Genesis sound" as became succesful. However, times changes and to stay alive, you need to change, whatever fans thought...And they gained more fans, lost some but got more successful. To even belive that one could change minds of original members such as Mike and (more) Tony, to do music they did NOT want to do... Ridiciolous.... They were the leaders of the band, more Tony than Mike but rest asure, it was NOT Phil "ruining" the band.... I´m one of the lucky ones who loves E V E R Y T H I NG they did! My first listen was in 1981, probably Duke before Abacab but could be the other way around. Loved it, and then ATOTT and the Lamb and so on. Everytime I heard something new it was a bliss, a new revelation! And, I did not wear the same clothes in the ´70s as I did in the ´80s and even music changed! Still love it though! (or for some clothes I do regret...) :D

In 1992, I came SO CLOSE to seeing "The Way We Walk Live" in Detroit. The guy I had just started dating had bought tickets with his little sister before we met. He tried to buy hers off her so I could go, but alas, she was having none of it. That was really, I think, the last tour where they were in peak form. Phil's voice cracked a couple times, but by the time they toured again, it had gotten to the point where they had to drop the songs to a lower key because Phil couldn't hit the high notes any more, as as much as I love them, it just never sounds right to me when that happens. I keep wanting to sing it in the key I know it's supposed to be in. So, yeah. I missed my shot. But I've seen the video and it was an excellent show.

I think you'd dig a lot of the '80s Genesis. That's where I started with them and worked backward. A lot of folks point to Phil as pulling Genesis into more pop territory, but I really think that was a full-on band thing. A lot of those hits - Follow You, Follow Me, Invisible Touch, Turn It on Again, Land of Confusion, I Can't Dance, Throwing It All Away - are were born out of all Rutherford's guitar. Rutherford wrote lyrics on Follow You, Illegal Alien, Land of Confusion too. Banks seems like a guy who doesn't do anything he doesn't want to do either. But all those albums had prog-like pieces as well. Plus that nice and loud gated drum sound on most of them. Duke's Travels/Duke's End, Dodo/Lurker, Tonight, Tonight, Tonight, Home by the Sea/Second Home by the Sea are just a couple examples.

Genesis is a great band before and after Peter. Peter is more theatrical and not as commercial and Phil is more outgoing and lively as a front man. Phil has a more powerful voice I think.

I know Phil's not well these days but wouldn't it be awesome if Peter Gabriel and Steve Hackett could be lured back for one final show. There's a certain farm in Somerset which might be a good venue.

Another video from this concert that ROCKS is ABACAB (have to check which one you saw). Mike has some dynamite solos and Phil jumps on the drums. Domino is another rocker from this concert. Like your review and hearing what you hear in the differences between Peter and Phil, similar but different. Phil and Peter are amazing talents! Music changed and Genesis understood. Daryl is a great guitarist. He can play anything, having started out with jazz. He played with Jean Luc Ponty before Genesis. And of course, Chester was with Zappa and Weather Report!

I think it's the very next track (according to another comment) ... I might just give it another shot. I wasn't blown away by it lol like the rest of their catalog. After I finish the lamb... maybe :)

@@L33Reacts Good. (looking forward to the next Lamb episode) Mike underestimated his guitar abilities (Daryl was technically brilliant and may have made Mike a bit intimidated). But his solos on this concert's ABACAB are some of his best gems. Phil and Chester are of course amazing. I can always tell when Collins starts playing. The energy level just elevates somehow.

Did Phil ruin Genesis? YMMV. I doubt many of the thousands of people at Wembley that day had copies of Foxtrot or The Lamb in their collections, so hard core prog fans are often on the 'yes' side of the fence. That said, this particular song is sort of a sop to the Gabriel days (and the kind of music Peter was making in the late 70's/early 80's). IMO this song is an outlier from this album (along with "Home By The Sea"). Genesis from this period was the kind of band whose music adorned beer commercials. The opening act for this show was romantic pop crooner Paul Young, so you can see what the industry thought of Genesis at the time.

Do you like Phil? I've been a big Genesis fan ever since the release of their 1980 album, Duke. Before that, I really didn't understand any of their work. Too artsy, too intellectual. It was Duke where Phil's presence became more apparent. The music got more modern, the drum machine became more prevalent, and the lyrics started getting less mystical and more specific (maybe because of Peter's departure). Complex, ambiguous studies of loss became, instead, smashing first-rate pop songs that I gratefully embraced. I think Invisible Touch was the group's undisputed masterpiece, an epic meditation on intangibility featuring brilliant ensemble playing. In terms of sheer songwriting, it hits a new peak of professionalism.

I'm the same. I also got into Genesis via Nursery Cryme,Foxtrot and Selling England By The Pound and am a huge fan of that period.I loved Peter's theatrical take on the songs although I feel it could distract from the music on times.I know Phil did many backing vocals on the early albums but still deserves a lot of credit for stepping up to become the front-man when Peter eventually left. One hell of a drummer too!

Genesis at their peak of popularity. In 1987, the thing cool to do was attend a Genesis concert, they've done Wembley stadium sold out 4 nights at the really end of the Invisible tour. They never got bigger than this. Awesome tour. My first rock concert with Genesis in Paris Bercy in june 87. You should do the whole concert on your own. Try Drum duet- Los endos, The brazilian, Abacab, Tonight, tonight, tonight, Domino, Home by the sea from the same concert.
