It is a concept album that tells a story, and this song is close to the beginning, so I would go back and start from the beginning of the album and go in order if possible. This is one of my favorite albums of all time, seriously in top 10. The intro riff to "Speak" was the music used in a common MTV bumper that played a dozen times a day for several years.

A top concept album. The band was incorrectly lumped in with grunge.

@@L33Reacts If you like this song that much, the album might be your favorite of all-time. They build on this musical theme. Virtually all the songs are crazy good. You're losing time that could otherwise be spent listening to this album. Recommend getting your reaction on video for posterity if nothing else.

This is truly one of the great albums of all time. If you get a chance watch the DVD of operation livecrime...it's the entire 15 songs played live in concert and it is stupendous. There are four or five radio hits off of this album alone that made it huge.

One of the best concept albums of all time! Operation Mindcrime came out in 1988. It follows the story of Nikki, a young man who joins an underground revolution led by Dr X. Nikki becomes the hitman for this group and starts killing people off on orders from Dr X. This song shows Dr X introducing Nikki to become their hitman and to stay by the phone for orders. And the story goes from there... You should really listen to it. The lyrics and music hits you hard in the face like a slap from a world champion of face slapping... (Especially if you are an American, I think) Be safe Björn

This is their most metal sounding album. Also a concept album masterpiece. The album before this (Rage For Order) is my favorite and it's much more proggy. The album after (Empire) was their greatest success. Their debut EP has some metal sounding stuff on it.

Check out one of their early songs "Take Hold of the Flame" live in Tokyo 1984 ! Geoff was about 25 yrs old and the rest of the guys were about 20. It's at the beginning of their careers but they were so tight, even then. Geoff sang primarily in his higher range then (he hits three E5's, and he's actually a baritone)! In later albums he brings in more of his lower register which is really warm and rich. In his prime he had a 4-octave range I believe! And no one can belt like him! Perfect tone, pitch, power, vibrato, intensity, etc! And Scott's drumming is crazy good! My favorite instrument. I see you're a drummer, yea! ALL the guys are just fantastic! SO many songs to choose from! But, thats a start.

You need to hear Queen of the Ryche to understand how they came into the world and hit the radio with a fucking crowbar! We were like ...who the hell are these guys? and is that singer from another dimension? Over the years they developed their real voice... But a great band out of Seattle before Seattle became the grunge capital...

I'm so glad youre going to do a whole album reaction of O:M!!! I've been listening to this album for over 3 decades and I never get tired of it (or ANY of QR's music, original lineup) and it always sounds fresh and relative, even today! Saw them live and met them many times -- great guys and BEST LIVE PERFORMANCES I've ever seen! Have the lyrics handy when you listen to this album. It's a complicated story told in flashback. The more you listen, the more you hear! Yes, I recommend listening to the songs in sequence. You will understand the lyrics and whats going on emotionally and thematically that way. As for being prog, their music has a distinctive sound, but they are so diverse in their songwriting and musicianship, that I think that makes them "progressive". But, I personally think they have their OWN distinct niche in music, as they are unlike anyone else. Interesting trivia: Eddie Jackson added that little bass riff you commented on anytime there was mention of the main character's (Nikki) drug use. Just a little extra emphasis on that aspect of the storyline. No "meh" songs on the entire album!!! I could go on at great length about these guys, but I'll just say that you won't be disappointed by this album, and I'll be watching for your review of it!

I saw Geof Tate on his tour this month in Germany. He played the complete Operation Mindcrime Album together with Songs like "Empire", Silent Lucidity", "Take hold of the flame". He is still as good as I saw him with Queensryche on the Empire tour in 1990 or 1991. The thing is: you can hear Operation Mindcrime right from the beginning up until the end. There will be no weak or average song! I suggest Mission, Breaking the Silence, Eyes of a stranger as the next listenings :-)

Never, ever have I thought of Queensryche as prog. You were spot on when you said it’s rock/metal. They are not prog. I was the music director/DJ at a very popular rock station in a top 5 market, and we would do prog weekends. Queensryche never came up in any meetings or conversations regarding progressive rock. This band is great, don’t get me wrong, but prog they are not. Seen them live half dozen times, and they are tight as hell! ☮️❤️😎🎼

Geoff Tate had the best metal voice of the 80's, check out their live version of 'Take Hold Of The Flame' filmed in Tokyo around '84 to really hear his voice at it's peak. I'm a big Rush fan but Queensryche's album "Rage For Order" is my favorite album of all time, it was ahead of its time and proggy. (side note...I hated the 'Rage For Order' album when I first heard it but by the third time I was hooked).

You just have to do this entire album, front to back. This album, and the one that followed, “Empire,” were the high point of this lineup of Queensryche. Chris DeGarmo (the one in the anarchy shirt) was critical to the sound of the band, and when he left after Empire, the band was never the same.

Great album! I read rave reviews about it at the time but heard it only a few years later, in the early nineties, just before the Grunge boom exploded from the same city. This is a very ambitious album and one that's stood the test of time. Mother Love Bone's album (issued posthumously after the singer tragically OD'd a week before the scheduled release in early 1990) is completely awesome too, with incredible dynamics, multi-layered sound and superb vocals and lyrics.

@@L33Reacts That's cool because this album is a concept album which needs to be listened to from beginning to end. You can either listen to it and try to figure out the storyline as you go or you can read about the storyline beforehand... either way, you'll enjoy it thoroughly. There is an "Operation:Mindcrime Part 2" which they released 18 years later in 2006 which wraps up the story but in my opinion doesn't come close to the first one. Intestingly enough, the lead singer here, Geoff Tate, put together a band/project called Operation: Mindcrime specifically for the purpose of a concept trilogy which included the albums The Key (2015), Resurrection (2016) and The New Reality (2017)... all part of the same story. Not sure many people know of it but it's actually really good.
