You are right: Rick played a real church organ in Parallels and Awaken. Next week if you feel like going for a 10 minute emotional song To Be Over would be a great pick. If you feel like going for a shorter song with an ass-kicking bass line I recommend you should try « No opportunity needed, no experience necesary » from their second album. The bass on this song literally knocked out Geddy and converted him instantly into a Chris Squire fan. It also got him to buy his first Rickenbaker bas.

Yes opened all their shows from 1977 to 1979 with "Parallels." Well, they actually opened the shows with an excerpt from Stravinsky's "Firebird Suite" to warm up the audience first. Then they would segue into "Parallels." Before that, they would open their shows with "Siberian Khatru." And "Wonderous Stories" is just Classic Yes. An absolutely beautiful piece of music. A splendid reaction as always, good sir. Peace, Love & Light.

Awesome selection. Parallels was Squire’s song. The album was recorded (for the most part) in Switzerland. All the pipe organ parts were recorded via telephone lines from a local cathedral so that’s the real thing there! "Wonderous Stories" reached the Top Ten in the UK and Ireland. Rick: "It was the piece of music that brought me back to Yes in 1976. I left in May 1974 and two years later I got a call from Jon, who was in Switzerland at the time. He said, “Rick, can I send you a cassette?” and I said of course. There were two pieces on it: one was him playing acoustic guitar and singing “Wonderous Stories.” The other track was “Going for the One,” again acoustic guitar and a bit of the main theme. I called him up and I said, “These are great. If everything is gonna be like this, I’m your man.” So I flew to Switzerland and that was when, in 1976, Jon and I really cemented our friendship. It was all down to “Wonderous Stories” being on that cassette." Steve: "We had just seemed to take up things where they'd been before just as though Rick never left. He fits in smoothly where it just didn't work out with Patrick. Patrick wasn't doing anything wrong. We just weren't jelling."

This was the opening song on the favorite time out of the more than a dozen times I've seen Yes. The Going for the One Tour in 1977. Donovan was the support act.The reason it's got that"church sound" is that Rick Wakeman recorded from an actual pipe organ in a church down the road from where they recorded this. Lee: I think of this as the Yes song where they tame the mighty pipe organ and ride it like a wild horse. And Chris's bass is where it meets it's match. Like King Kong fighting dinosaurs, we survive the thrills and spills and then are thankful to be alive. The fact that recorded music can be that wild an experience is truly a marvel. Rick Wakeman recorded the church organ in an actual cathedral that was about 10 miles away from the studio in Montreux, Switzerland. It was the first time a song was recorded from that distance through a digital phone line, instead of using a mobile recording unit. "Parallels" is an underrated Yes song. Some point to it as a departure and the beginning of a more commercial direction for Yes. I wouldn't disagree, although I see "Parallels" as consistent with everything Chris Squire had done within Yes going all the way back to "Beyond and Before". And that's Steve doing the vocal counterpoint near the end. "Wondrous Stories" was the song Atlantic chose to release as a single (and good on ya to react to the video -- as you can imagine there weren't many Yes videos made during the 70's!). It's yet again not really representative of the entire album, but it does have a nice, commercial vibe. It was used in a Volkswagen TV ad not long ago.

You seem to have become quite the fan of Chris Squire as you've delved deeper into Yes. I fell down that rabbit hole, too, many moons ago, and never came out - the man shaped my choice of instrument and redefined its role (and mine as a bass player) within a band. Interesting little nugget I picked up somewhere: Squire's first instrument of choice was the guitar, but he was a huge dude with enormous hands - for perspective, there's a music magazine cover from...1987? with him and Trevor Rabin on the cover (also a pretty big dude), each holding their instrument. Squire is holding his bass mid-neck, as I recall, with his thumb over the top and his fingers coming round to where they almost touched his thumb, like half-an-inch close. Anyways, in his mid-teens he comes to grips with the fact that his hands are too big for the guitar, switches to bass, but always keeps those lead/front-melody leanings of a guitarist, vs the rhythm-first approach of a lot of what I call "traditional" bassists. And you can hear that all over Yes, that tendency to find the lead spot or otherwise draw attention to the bass. With that in mind, I just cannot WAIT for you to get to his solo album from 1974, Fish out of Water. It may as well be an alt-Yes album with Squire on vocals, with Bill Bruford playing drums (his snare sound on this album...never so crisp. Prepare tissue), Patrick Moraz of Relayer fame on keyboards, and a few assorted other stars in their own realm, and it just demonstrates so clearly the massive input and influence he had on Yes - no other solo album by any other Yes member comes closer to sounding like Yes than this one, melodically, rhythmically, you can see one in the other. Another tidbit for your Saturday morning: In the making-of video for this album, Squire describes one piece (Canon Song) recorded in a church (in...Switzerland?), to get the full power of the church organ and the acoustics of the place. They have the church organ player, at his post off to the side and literally out of sight of the rest of the band; Moraz and his stuff; Bruford with his kit; Squire with his setup (and you can imagine he pulled no punches), and a full orchestra to boot for the end section. Mic what needs to be mic'ed up, mic the room for good measure, equalize the sound in the main hall, and everybody can hear each other in real time...but the church organ is a real pipe organ - the keys basically control blasts of air into the tubes, which then resonate at their frequency, but up to several seconds after the keys are actually touched, because it takes that time for the air to travel through the pipes. So the guy manning the church organ had to be playing *ahead of the rest of the band for his notes to sync up with what the band was playing. Crazy stuff. And I thought Meshuggah was f*cked. lol All in due time - but I think your mind will be forever blown. Meanwhile, looking forward to your Parallels reaction. Happy Saturday, Tony
@truthteller612911 ай бұрын
Always thought the production on this tune was too cluttered. Especially Steve constantly riffing and all the layered vocals flooded in delay and reverb. If you watch the video of them in Switzerland working on the rhythm track, it’s awesome. Just rhythm guitar, keys, bass and drums. Really brings out that Chris “Soul Train”groove you mentioned. It’s Chris’s song after all.

As a staunch fan beginning at 15 from 71, this was the first YES song that didn't instantly appeal to me and my least favorite of the album GFTO. I never got over it's more POP SOUNDING vocal melody & chorus. I think bassist Chris Squire was the main writer and I have felt the same about his later songs with 80s' YES. It's catchy enough for a mainstream PROG listener and ends extremely strong thanks to guitarist Steve Howe. And even though it's praised by many fans, I still tend to avoid or skip it when listening to the album which was something I'd never do previously with a YES album. It was the first time I realized YES were in fact human and not GODS! LOL!!! I was always a bit disappointed when they began using it as a temporary substituted for their usual opening Live track, the GREAT Siberian Khatru.

The *only* keyboard in this whole song is the church organ at Vevey, and it's playing throughout. That's a novelty in itself. The vocals in your right ear when you mentioned them were Steve, same tune as the main bass riff. You asked who was on harmony vocals on Parallels. I have a feeling that the isolated lower register vocals on the right is Steve. Chris is up there in the higher register with Jon. Just my guess.

I think you are right someone else said it was Steve too. They all harmonize so well. They all bring a different key and nail it so well 😌

In the past twenty years, Yes has mostly kept the “Parallels” and “Awakening” vibe on their albums. It is almost their own music sub-genre. For some listeners, the songs could be redundant and repetitive.

So i just had a temporary mind blown mind... what is the consensus on the message of this album? What do you think "going for the one" means? Because paired with the album art and song names im totally seeing the fact that these guys saw the future somehow. Its those skyscrapers that kinda give it away. They look the building they built on top of the world trade centers 😅 ive been there a lot 😂

Wakeman said in an interview that the reason he decided to rejoin Yes for this album is that the feel of the music was summed up in the title. After the massive explorations of "Tales" and "Relayer," this to him felt like more "normal" music that really was "Going for the One." Take that for what it's worth.

I believe the title has something to do with sports 😅😅

Decent song though lacks the emotion which is evident on all the other songs from this excellent album. That was I thought of Parallels. Love Wonderous Stories.

Live Awaken? Check out Chris’s 3-necked bass! Jon on harp! ❤️❤️❤️ I’m not sure if there’s a Symphonic version but those gigs are really worth checking out, especially for Gates live fire 🔥

The Yanni song you were looking for is called "Cowboy's Dream" and is the opening song on his 1992 album "Dare To Dream". I'm so glad I tracked it down for you. In return, perhaps you might consider reacting to the song "Heather" by Billy Cobham from his 1974 album "Crosswinds". It features my favorite sax solo of all time, from the late, great Michael Brecker. It would be wonderful to share such an incredible musical moment with everybody. All the best to you, Lee. I always look forward to your reactions and I'm particularly enjoying your current voyage with Yes. It's reminding me of my own experiences when I first listened to the band back in the early seventies. Take care. Andy.

Unfortunately there is no yanni song called cowboys dream. The first song on dare to dream is once upon a time I believe. I looked it up and I think it was keys to imagination or something like that. Thank you though! 😊

Well that's weird. That info cane from something claiming to be a Yanni discography! Sorry for getting your hopes up Lee!

Just say it's YESterday. The yanni song your thinking of is "Felista" according to chatgpt.

Hi Lee! I’m a Patreon fan…have you done Starship Trooper? Or Yours is No Disgrace? Actually any Yes that you haven’t done is great to request. Big Generator is a great album. Title track, or Shoot High Aim Low, Holy Lamb….anything. My request ☮️❤️😎
