So I thought we would try something REALLY different for the channel... this album is one of the most well lauded and cited albums of all time and I thought we'd give it a listen... here is my reaction to side A and side B will be next week!

The Wrecking Crew is something to check out. Not a band, but a famous loose collection of great musicians that were in great demand and played for everyone. Some went on to big careers, including Glen Campbell and Leon Russell

Glen actually temporarily replaced Brian in the Beach Boys for touring purposes. Glen also has a soaring falsetto. He was replaced by the more permanent Bruce Johnston.

People talk about the beginnings of prog with King Crimson etc, but the key elements, unusual chord changes, different instrumentation, different time signatures are all here in this album. The Beatles were a team effort creatively, with the help of George Martin producing. The Beach Boys was all Brian Wilson!

The story is Paul McCartney played "God Only Knows" in the studio everyday while the Beatles were making Sgt. Pepper. You can definitely hear the influence in their music.

​@@vurogjYeah, no, that's false. Many things culminated into Brian shelving SMiLE. His drug use had gotten out of hand, his mental state was becoming worse and he could never get it as perfect as he wanted. He was also doing it all himself. He didn't have a Lennon or McCartney. He didn't have a George Martin. He was them all wrapped into one and it became too much for one person. Not to mention the pushback from his own group (Mike Love) and Capitol records rushing him to get something out. He has, though, cited hearing Strawberry Fields as the Beatles "winning" the race for the sound he was working for that he knew was going to be huge. And you can't say it ruined him because look at the music, including him finally finishing SMiLE decades later, that he has put out very late in life especially after everything he's been through.

Yeah, yeah L. Brian was blown away that the Beatles had all great songs on their Rubber Soul album. He vowed to make the greatest Pop Album ever. Pet sounds was first teenage Pop album with one comprehensive "feel", as well as sad/beautiful timeless songs. The Mastepiece....

There is a documentary about the wrecking crew. Studio musicians who recorded a lot of the hits of the sixties and seventies. In the documentary they talk about recording The Beach Boys and commenting about Brian Wilson being a musical genius. It's a must watch! Also the flip sides has the song Good Vibrations which was one of their top hits.

There is a fantastic documentary "The Wrecking Crew." If you are interested in early rock history you will love it. They are playing on this album. Brian Wilson is a musical genius. He wrote, arranged, sang, played (piano) and produced all of the Beach Boys tracks. He is amazing. And he did it while battling bipolar issues. And remember, everything was analog back then. The only influence possible was EQ and very simplistic reverb. Back then you had to be able to sing just as good live as you did in the studio. That's why people from back then can still sing in their 70's, they were pure talent from the beginning of their career! Quality lasts.

Did you know that the Beach Boys harmonies came from recreating those of the American male vocal group The Four Freshmen ? There is a short video where Brian Wilson and Al Jardine talk about copying them note for note. The Wilson brothers' father and manager was a big fan of the Freshmen. They also talk to a 2012 incarnation of the Freshmen, who are aware of this, and at one point the video segues between The Freshmen and the Beach Boys both singing the Beach Boys song "Surfer Girl". Before 'Pet Sounds' the Beach Boys made the most soulful ballads - 'Surfer Girl', Don't Worry Baby', 'In My Room', 'The Warmth of the Sun', 'God Only Knows', 'Sail On, Sailor', etc.

'Sail on Sailor' came 7 years after Pet Sounds. 'Warmth of the Sun' is absolutely gorgeous. It is inventive, with a stunning melody and harmonic structure. 'In My Room' may be the first ever emo song. Hauntingly evocative and beautiful.

I’ll second, third and forth watching the documentary on the Wrecking Crew. There is a fairly significant portion devoted to the making of Pet Sounds with Brian Wilson essentially creating the album with the Wrecking Crew. Fascinating.

Back in those days, top selling artists such as the Beach Boys or the Beatles were expected to release a new album every four to six months. If memory serves, their first album was released in 1962, so in four years they released 11 albums. The influence on the Beatles was not only limited to harmonies. If you listen to chord progressions in many of the songs, you'll hear that Brian Wilson is not only using a lot of jazz chords, he is establishing progressions that were far from typical. Additionally, the bass on Pet Sounds was highly influential to Paul McCartney. Paul spent hours trying to recreate the bass sound that Brian got on Pet Sounds when the Beatles were recording Sgt. Pepper. It wasn't until years later that Paul learned that Brian was using a number of different instruments playing the same part to create the sound he wanted, e.g. electric bass, upright bass, baritone guitar. I'm very much looking forward to side two.

Probably no better example of one person forcing out of their head a sound and getting it down on tape. Can you imagine hearing such original music in your head? We are fortunate that he was able to share it with us, at some cost to himself.

One of the greatest albums ever. Best production in rock music history. If you haven't seen the biopic on Brian Wilson, LOVE AND MERCY is one of the best films ever made about a musician. Check it out. Brian's wife just passed away this week. When you see the film, you will see how important she is/was. 'Sloop John B' shouldn't be on the album. It was made earlier, but Capitol wanted the hit song on there. Doesn't mesh with the other songs thematically AT ALL. A brilliant arrangement of a folk song, but shouldn't be on PET SOUNDS.

"Sloop John B." was actually Brian Wilson's adaptation of a Bahamian (hence the reference to Nassau) folk song from the early 1900s. So, as much Caribbean as doo-wop...

Eventually, hope you'll read about Brian's long gestating production of the album Smile and look into the documentary of Brian's solo band performing the finally-finished album. There was influence going both ways between the Beatles and Beach Boys, but less in terms of sound or style and more in the sense of developing a new kind of approach to pop music. Previous musicians had largely churned out very similar-sounding songs out of stock parts on an assembly line model. Aided by new recording technologies, those two bands were at the forefront of a new way of thinking about the medium, in which each song could be a unique creation that didn’t sound quite like anything you’d ever heard before. For more Beach Boys, and to see a bit more of their evolution towards Pet Sounds, I’d recommend their great 1965 album "Today!"

I Grew up In Hawthorne Ca. One Of The best concerts I was fortunate to see was A New Year's show with The Beach Boys and Joe Walsh's Barnstorm on the bill. Joe came back out at midnight to jam with the Beach Boys who had saved all their R 'n' 'Roll classics for the end of the show. It was a blast watching Joe out there duck walking with Carl & Al to Fun, Fun, Fun etc..

It was recorded on a 4-track tape recorder... no pitch correction... no digital effects... no replacing single notes... no synths... no samples... no violence... no hatred... no sexual content. You Still Believe in Me's intro. was played on the inside strings of a piano using a guitar pick. And God Only Knows... McCartney calls it the greatest song ever recorded. Brian Wilson has said that it came from God and that he wrote all of it in 4 minutes. Caroline No is probably my favorite song by the BB. A water bottle half full created the percussion. The train and dog barking at the end came from Brian's back yard. I almost cry when I hear it. Glen Campbell's guitar playing is all over this album. The great Hal Blaine on drums... and the great Carol Kaye on bass. Brian heard every single sound in his head and taught it to the wrecking crew... one part at a time. He rarely wrote notes on paper. The musicians were in total awe of him. Carl Wilson plays bass and guitar some on the album. It's genius-level stuff that we may never see or hear again. Some call Brian the Mozart of our lifetimes. I agree. The picture was taken at the San Diego Zoo. Thank you for your positive approach to this L33. A young person who 'gets it.' Beach Boys music got me through my youth. The Beatles were very important to me also... but the Beach Boys just hit me harder emotionally. Just think... the Beatles had George Martin to produce everything and create the weird effects and soundscapes... and John, Paul, and George to write songs. The Beach Boys had Brian to do all of that. The guys really didn't want the name Beach Boys. They didn't like it. Pigeon holed them. Their music went far, far beyond what the name suggests. Thank you again L33. Some great comments. btw... Brian had to stop touring in about 1966 because of mental health issues... so he stayed home and wrote this music. He called the rest of the band 'the messengers.' Carl Wilson took over most of the vocals that Brian recorded and they added Bruce Johnston to the mix to fill in for Brian. They missed Brian's gorgeous falsetto though. Bruce didn't quite cut it. But they were still great. They eventually became more of a rock stadium act with a harder edge. It was necessary. Massive crowds. Their song library is worth about 100 million. When they were in their prime... they could have played 3 concerts in one night without repeating anything. Over 50 top 40 hits that most people recognize. And you are correct. It's soul music.

America's favorite sons. Surfing, Hot Rods, and even Hotter Girls. That's what they sang about from 1963 to 2015 or so. The genius singer/songwriter Brian Wilson's friendly rivalry with The Beatles Paul McCartney was great to observe in retrospect. How they influenced one another to outdo the other. Both had crazy respect for each other. Both were true musical geniuses. All of the members were related as either brothers (Brian, Dennis, and Cal) or as cousins. Greatest harmonies ever. Their father drilled those boys like a Marine Corps Drill Sgt. Brian had a nervous breakdown later and stayed in his bedroom for almost 25 years. He was really messed up. He gained a ton of weight, and wouldn't speak to anybody, including his own brothers. He finally received the mental help he needed and even began writing music again in the late 80s. There are a couple of Books on his tragic life. He's doing well now, but he must be at least 80 years old. If you were born from anywhere from the 1940s to the 1970s, you were probably raised on, or at least familiar with those great Beach Boys Classics. Thanks friend.

This was their 11th studio album but that doesn't mean they were playing from decades at that point 🙂 They released the previous 10 albums in the preceding 4 years: 1 by the end of 1962 and three albums per year (Yes, you read right) from 1963 to 1965

While recording (from April 6 - June 27, 1966) what would become the "REVOLVER" L.P. , Lennon & McCartney first heard in London the "PET SOUNDS" L.P. between May 16-21, 1966. "PET SOUNDS" was officially released in the U.K. on June 27, 1966. The "REVOLVER" L.P. was officially released on August 5, 1966 in the U.K. and August 8, 1966 in the U.S.

It's a beautiful recording. The Beach Boys are a vastly underrated band by my estimation; at least these days. Although none of them are masterpieces like Pet Sounds, they still put out quite a few really good albums!

I have a huge collection of music (vinyl and cd and digital), I've worked at record stores, and I've worked at both college and commercial radio as a DJ... This album, along with their ill-fated follow up album "SMiLE", would both make my TOP 20 albums of all-time. They are both masterpieces from the brilliant mind of BRIAN WILSON. "GOD ONLY KNOWS" might be the most perfect song ever written. Brian was a musical genius, for sure. Stunning and every bit as vibrant today as the day they were released.

This is the brilliance of Brian Wilson's production. The influence on The Beatles, who had just released Rubber Soul, was probably that the Beach Boys had just one-upped them. The Beatles responded with Revolver, and later the Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever 45, and then Sgt Pepper.

Great vídeo. I think pet sounds is a classic band drummer less album. Brian choose to use some of different orchestral instruments that is very different from a classical band sound.

This came out in 1966. The first Beach Boys album came out in 1962. So within 4 years they released 10 albums. That's how bands did it back then, which is why many bands filled their albums with cover songs. It wasn't until the late 60s that bands began doing one album a year, ,and not until the late 70s that bands could take a few years between albums without it being called a "comeback." This occured when Bruce Springsteen took an unheard of 3 years between Born To Run (his breakthrough album) and his next release: Darkness on the Edge of Town.

It was the release of 'Rubber Soul' in December 1965 that marked the birth of the album. Prior to that, most artists included their most recent 'hits' and a number of cover tunes and filler tracks. As Brian Wilson noted, 'Rubber Soul' featured 14 good songs, no fillers. It did not even include the single, 'We Can Work it Out' b/w 'Day Tripper.' Thus 'Rubber Soul' inspired 'Pet Sounds,' and thus 'Pet Sounds' inspired 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.'

I'd love to see your reaction to the album Spilt Milk by Jellyfish. They were a short-lived band in the early 90s that only put out two albums and they're both incredible. Spilt Milk is a masterpiece with beautiful harmonies and orchestrations influenced by Brian Wilson's Pet Sounds era work. I think you'd also appreciate the lead singer's drumming - which he did while standing up during live performances.

McCartney came for a visit while Pet Sounds was being made. Spent time with Brian. Had a big influence on Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band. Mike Love also went to India with the Beatles to learn transcendental mediation later. Donovan also went with them.

In fact, he was never in the United States during the time frame of the "PET SOUNDS" recording session dates (July & December 1965 and January - April 1966). McCartney DID visit a Beach Boy recording session in Los Angeles on April 10, 1967.

Decades? Not at all. The first album, Surfin Safari, was released in 1962, and this one, the 11th, was released in 1966. Bands in those days, didn't have the luxury of tinkering in the studios for months on end......even The Beatles were on a very strict timescale, especially in the early years.

They had some interesting experimental albums after this, and serious problems with Brian Wilson's mental health, which could have tanked the band for good. Some odd experiments with R&B and less of the beautiful harmonies. In my opinion, their next high-quality ones (musically and lyrically) were "Sunflower" and it's follow-up, "Surf's Up" both in the early 1970s. They weren't as popular by then, but Pet Sounds and these two are definitely my top 3 Beach Boys albums.

Wilson Brothers father, Murray, was a sadistic sick excuse for a human being. His abuse caused Brian to succumb to drugs and mental illness. It’s a miracle he came out. He just lost his wife. Hope he survives the loss.
