I have been hoping someone would request Elvis Costello! I absolutely love him. He was loosely associated with some of those from the London Pub Rock scene. You've done one from Dave Edmunds, and one from the Stranglers. Dave was in a band with Nick Lowe (a new wave pioneer and producer), and both of them also had solo careers. Nick wrote songs for Dave and for Elvis, and Elvis wrote songs for Dave, and well, they all were great lol! Elvis Costello has 33 studio albums. His father wrote jingles. Elvis was banned from SNL for like 10 years for playing the song he wanted instead of the one he was told to play. He is an incredible artist, and particularly, lyricist. Some good ones are Accidents Will Happen, (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding, Watching the Detectives, Chelsea, Mystery Dance, Red Shoes, This Year's Girl, Every Day I Write the Book. I could go on. Look for live versions from Rockpalast. They were always truly live like Midnight Special.

Great choice - as others have said already, the Elvis Costello rabbit hole is a deep one, and covers several genres and moods. As a Dylan fan, you should definitely check out The New Basement Tapes, a project Elvis headed to put together a bunch of artists to create music to go with old, unreleased Dylan lyrics that Bob never wrote music for. Elvis Costello is a very gifted artist capable of transiting with ease through the many facets of music business and art making. His sense for melody is so noteworthy that Paul McCartney chose Costello as a composer partner to work with to see what they could come up with. Some of the results are found on their separate albums Spike by Elvis Costello and Flowers In The Dirt by Paul McCartney.

Elvis is a master pop song craftsman, and it's usually worth pulling out the lyrics sheets while listening. He's so productive that a lot of excellent material gets lost in the shuffle. In the mid 80's Elvis got together with Paul McCartney and they wrote a few songs together. Also, Elvis is responsible for Paul using his signature Hofner bass, having not used it for years. Elvis was at Paul's house writing, and he asked Paul if he still had his Hofner. Paul pulled it out of a closet, and he's used it ever since. Elvis is great I have been listening to him since 1978.

Elvis has many styles within his style. I just looked through his first two albums, and there are only a few "skip that one" songs. You can listen to his 1977 and 1978 albums straight through. Almost all of those songs are "must listen", just to hear the breadth of the styles within his unique style. Excellent band! :) Hi There, Lee! This was following the punk era with callouts to the clean, smart look of the 1960s UK bands (Hank Marvin and the Shadows - not quite the styles seen here, but iconic early rock) Other bands around that era... um, can't go wrong with _Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick_ from Ian Drury - very different but captivating style But, I think there's something wrong with me. I've gone bought PT's _Deadwing_ album, and I can't stop playing it. Killer driving record too

I was 19 years old. in '77, and the "category game" was ambiguous back then about Punk vs New Wave. EC first hit with "Watching the Detectives" a story-song with a deliberately twisted vibe. (and a "reggae-influence.") He leaned hard into his angry young man persona ~~ His first "love song" didn't come out until like his seventh album !! Who Knew he would turn out to be one of the most prolific and varied songwriters of the century ~~ (I'm a bit surprised it was this long before your first exposure) I recommend Accidents will Happen, Every Day I Write the Book, Goon Squad, & The Angels Want to Wear My Red Shoes, but there's just SO MUCH ........ By the way, his given name was Declan MacManus. Born in London, raised in Liverpool.
