I agree. I have a large and diverse album collection and this has been one of my favs for a long time. It's a shame that they were at their peak and the record company wanted them to take time off to do the solo album thing, I think they could have done a few more stellar discs like this when they were hot before prog died. I know I am alone in this, but I think Tormato is the last great prog record from the '70's, then it was never the same.

It's Patrick Moraz on keys, and the opening you hear on the electric piano was, essentially, what he created for them for his actual audition for the band.

@@bobcorbin3294It was the 1976 tour that had the moving "crab nebula" lighting rig. The greatest stage design of all time IMO. It was designed by Roger Dean. There are some good photos floating around on the Internet but unfortunately very little actual footage of that tour... Don't know why they didn't film it.

We would have a completely different album were Rick to play keyboards. Rick has such an amazing freestyle jazz style that made this album what it is. Granted, the 70s were a different time. It's a shame progressive isn't as epic any more, because it is still epic. I do miss OG yes, this makes me pine for the days. They were one of the best ever live.
@Lightmane

I don't know if anyone said this in the comments, but here's what Patrick Moraz said about this piece: “they played me just a part of the song, what they had of Sound Chaser, not the introduction, just a part of the song. They blew my mind. I was in the middle, and they started to do this riff, and Alan crashing with his drums and so on. They had just probably worked on this three-part harmony there - vocals. It was absolutely unbelievable. To experience that - I could say that was the truest surround experience I had ever encountered as an observer and listener. I was not in the middle of any keyboards at the time; I was just in the middle of the band. And they were playing for me, alone, the portion of Sound Chaser they had already come up with. And that was absolutely unbelievable. So Jon and Chris said, “We need an introduction to this. Can you come up with something?” Vangelis left his keyboards in the barn to be picked up later. Moraz found a couple of Moogs, an electric piano, an organ, and a Fender Rhodes with some uneven keys. Buying time to come up with that intro to Sound Chaser, he started tuning the synths while feverishly thinking of a suitable opening to that maddening piece he just heard. Moraz continues: “They all came around the keyboards and they were watching me play. I said “How about this?” and I came up with what was to become the introduction of Sound Chaser. I composed it on the spot, it was actually recorded there and then and it was used on Relayer. I explained it to Chris and Alan, and they worked on their parts. The whole thing was recorded there in the next 30 minutes and that’s what came out on the record.”

Rick Wakeman was doing his solo tour " Journey to the center of Earth " yes found Patrick Moraz as an awesome replacement. Was the very first song Patrick recorded with Yes with solid contribution. Amazing part of this song is Chris Squire playing faster than Steve Howe with his bass guitar 🎸. God rest his soul , Chris was the best bass player I've ever heard. And true Alan Whites blend if drumming is incredible 👏

it is very heartening to see new generations of music lovers appreciating this seminal prog work. Relayer is my favorite all-time prog rock album. I am 64 now and I think I was about 15 when I first heard it in about 1975. This album would never have come to fruition if Yes hadn't switched drummers from Bill Bruford to Alan White and from Rick Wakeman to Patrick Moraz on keys. The tempo change on Sound Chaser is sublime! No other prog album, even Close to the Edge, my second favorite prog work is as extraordinary!

I lost my freakin mind in 74 when first hearing this song and album at 18! YES ON STERIODS. sadly the only album with Pat Moraz on Keys. His solo album a year later is a MUST!!!! Each member is FIRE here! Jon's voice is so rich but he can often be aggressive which is often overlooked bc of his sweetness. Alan & Chris doing their best playing AGAIN here! Steve killing it with such finesse. Everything YES had ever done was packed into this one album, but bigger, badder, more daring & different than before !!!!! PURE GENIUS. YES at their most Prog-gressiveness !!!!! The next song, TO BE OVER is the perfect opposite side of the coin from this. YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

👍👋Yeah, their different keyboardists definitely bring a different sound. One of my favorite "latter day" Yes Songs is "Homeworld" with Igor Koroshev on keys and has both Steve Howe and Billy Sherwood on guitars. Billy Sherwood was hand picked by Squire to replace him on bass and really shapes the sound of modern Yes along with Downes on keys. They're always changing.

So glad you finally got to this, and glad you reacted to it the way you did. Keep on your Yes journey, they will not let you down. After Tales of Topographic Oceans, Rick Wakeman wanted to do a couple solo projects. Vangelis, who Jon Anderson did some solo work with, almost joined Yes at this time, but it didn't work out, so Patrick Moraz, from the Moody Blues, joined Yes for this amazing album, bringing a jazz fusion vibe to Yes, and they made one of their best albums. Side one was Gates, side two started with Sound Chaser and closed with To Be Over, another amazing song.

When I saw the tour for this album they opened with this. Was BLOWN AWAY because listen to the guitar when the vocals start and realize Steve is singing while he's playing the guitar you are listening to. Now, I realize he's not playing and singing at the same time on the album. But live, he freaking pulled it off and my head exploded. The "vitamins" I took an hour before the show didn't hurt either. But seriously, go back and listen to it a couple of times to really appreciate it. NOTE: I have my screen name for a reason.

The tom rolls in that intro were eye opening. Won a bunch of naysayers over to Alan's corner back in the day. Personally, I am now eager to hear you react to Tales From Topographic Oceans. On this Album the Keyboardplayer is Patrick Moraz, a swiss man, a more Jazz & Fusion Oriented Musican. His Playing on this Album was superb, as the Performance of the whole Band. Sound Chaser is, in my opinion, perhaps the complexed Piece of Music the Band ever done. The Album was Released in November 1974 and it was the only Studioalbum they made with the phenomenal Patrick Moraz. Relayer was 15 Years bevor Dream Theater and other Prog-Metal Bands and you can hear that 'Relayer' of Yes was the big Inspiration for Bands like Dream Theater and many others who came later. 😀Kind regards Heinz/Munich.

Alan totally upped his game from Tales, which shows here (plus it sounds like a totally different kit). But I'm pretty sure "Sound Chaser" is mainly Chris's song with Steve contributing the solo cadenza and Jon providing the softer bridge. Jon might also have come up with the "cha-cha-cha's", although Patrick had proven himself a fan of Brazilian music by this time). It's Patrick's funky solo section toward the end (plus as others have mentioned that opening fusion bit was part of his audition piece.)

When this was released, it wasn't universally well received by Yes fans, some of whom felt it was too different to what had gone before, too unusual. I noticed something in the verse part of the song: When they're singing, they actually augmentate the time signature (half notes get the beat) and then when the riff comes back, it goes back to that 5/4 feel. I also love Steve Howe's electric flamenco style in the middle, reminds me of a sequel to Mood for a Day.

When Chris Squire was alive, he was possibly the absolute best bassist to ever play that musical instrument. As for Steve Howe, although you aren't able to say that about him, he has quite a sound with that Gibson semi hollow body guitar. Oh, it's a single cut away ES 175. Here's an interesting fact for you; he only plays it in the States and on the Yes album. My absolute favorite guitar is from the same company as it, which is an ES 345 TDN. Why? It's because of all the different sounds it's capable of producing. Another absolutely incredible guitar is from a lady up here in Canada by the name of Linda Manzer. She crafted only two of them, which she called the Picasso, from the artist Pablo Picasso. This acoustics guitar has 42 string.

Dream Theater's keyboard player, Jordan Rudess, did a great cover of Sound Chaser on one of his albums. You should check it out.

I know a drummer who doesn't think Alan White had much talent. This track says otherwise

I've recently come across a newer prog rock band called Aviations which is really good! Their drummer also has drum playthroughs of several of their songs. It would be really cool if you check them out.

Hey Lee! So you want to do TRSOG for your 5K. Cool. May i suggest you do the live version from Keys to Ascension. In this case live before studio is 100 percent better! Trust me!! I know everyone will agree with me. Thanks!!!😎

"Revealing Science of God" next? I don't think you have watched "Ritual"--heavy drumming and mostly all members all come up front at one point and start drumming in unison. (Believe it is on SYmphonic Live DVD). Saw it live twice and was very memorable. I know you have a long list of requests so I'll stop with that. Going through the exact same thing with work right now and applying all over the place. It' s discouraging but there has to be a turnaround. I have listened to Yes during hospital stays, after losing parents and during other bad stretches and it really does chill me out.

My 5k subscriber special will be revealing science of God:) so I'm planning on it one week from today (granted I hit 5k but I think I will) And yes has been a God send for my mood and mental health. I swear I played and you and I 5 times this morning

There are no bad YES songs. I agree to do "To Be Over" and finish the album. Also checkout "Turn of the Century".

That's not Rick on keyboards. Patrick Moraz played keys on this album.

Alan white on drums! So many people say Neal pert was the greatest drummer, I say just a cause you have more drums on stage than other drummers doesn’t make one the greatest. It’s the guitar part that really love! It just keeps going all the way through the song. Allot of what you might thing is keyboards is actually Howe’s guitar work;) I think Sound Chaser is exactly right for this song, it’s one sound chasing another all the way through the song!!

This video reinforces my contention that Alan White was every bit as good as Bill Bruford!

It's not Rick on keys. He quit Yes after Tales From Topographic Oceans. Patrick Moraz plays on this album. He literally got the gig by composing the intro to Sound Chaser on the spot during his audition.

Oh the guitar part goes on forever! Do a best guitarist google search, good luck finding Stevie’s name on the list, unless it’s a top 100, and he’s still like 75!! Pisses me off, everybody has a favorite, I have a few, but none I’d put above how. Guitar world magazine, back in the day, I’m 68 this summer, did a best guitarist pole, Howe won in 1976, 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980. In 1981 that opened an HOF, with Howe as the first inductee. Which made him ineligible for the best pole;) They do the HOF thing to give the other guitarists a shot at the title. A lot of what you put on a keyboard is actually Stevie’s guitar. Patrick Moraz is the Keyboard player on Relayer.
