Great Jimi track. Buddy Miles gave Jimi a chance to change direction with the way he played drums.

Absolutely. Buddy played right on top of the beat. Mitch was more of a jazz drummer, more playing around the beat.

This is exactly what we miss with full time shredders shredding at top speed all the time. It’s the MUSIC, not the speed, that makes it immortal. Not that Jimi couldn’t play fast. He could most certainly play fast ENOUGH. But he always mixed it in the proper proportion with the creativity, note bending, and effects he alone was the master of. Pure genius.

He was a pioneer unlike any other. He paved the way for every one ever since.

I think a good example as far as creativity is his use of the wah wah pedal - didn't use it a a gimmick but knew what would fit. This might be my fave live album.

There are a couple of other must hear songs on the album : "Power To Love", and "Message To Love". Jimi also plays some good stuff on Buddy's song "Changes". John Mayer inserted part of "Power To Love" into his song "Who Did You Think I Was", plus he covered 2 other Hendrix songs on the trio part of his "Where The Light Is" DVD.

Good point about Buddy's scat singing sounding like the guitar. One thing that is often overlooked about Hendrix's playing is its sheer vocal quality--you can hear the cadences of the human voice in so many of his solos, including the second one here. He seemed to incorporate the call and response pattern of the great bluesmen into the solos themselves. BTW, side one of this LP is one of the great LP sides in music history. This was the first of the two tracks on that side and the second was the icon that is Machine Gun. Thanks for choosing this!
@L33Reacts2 ай бұрын
Yup machine gun follows this. That’s wild. Two iconic performances back to back. He’s really good at doing that.

in my opinion hendrix was not only a guitarist, a guitarist (like a pianist for example) is just a performer, Hendrix was above that, he was especially a musical genius and composer, the guitar was a means of expression

One of my very favorite Hendrix songs ! He's doing so many little finger moves getting this awesome groove sound here and the tone on this track I just love with Cox & Miles holding down such A heavy Bass line and Clean Drum sound ! 👍 I'll never forget my older Brother buying this album and we couldn't wait to hear Jimi's new band sound and it still sound great these 54 years later ! ✌🎶

After the part when Buddy "scats", Jimi hits his Octavia pedal which gives that kind of sheet metal sound. The Octavia simultaneously plays the same note a few octaves higher.

I absolutely agree with you when it comes to Buddy Miles having a more solid meter and just all around a more solid drummer. Mitch Mitchell is awesome on the studio recordings but he gets a bit to much out there on the live stuff. I've got the 50th anniversary copy of Band of Gypsies which is all 4 shows. It's my favorite Hendrix stuff...Keep going on the Band of Gypsies L33! I love watching your shows!

it's a pity he didn't live at least 1-2 years longer, it's the same regret as with Mozart, if they had wanted to live at least a little longer we would have been much happier (a fan of Hendrix and Mozart writes, although not just these two...).

Sadly, Jimi would pass away shortly after this Gig. The "Band of Gypsies" part of Jimi's career is not necessarily better than "The Jimi Hendrix Experience" era, it's just a different side of Jimi and his talent, we didn't get to "experience", (no pun intended). Jimi is still the best, and for my money, he always will be.

Jimi would always turn the corner,when improvising,others nowdays are somewhat predictable with a bag of tricks,which isn,t memorable music,just flash,not creativity
