There are some creative adjustments (Roger is not doing THE scream when Pete does his slide). Also, Moon is clearly not in great shape. It is a step down from their best work which was from maybe 69-75. Just my opinion...and I did see them during those peak years
@dandare424 ай бұрын
@@billbitterman9487 True enough. It's a few years past their peak, but past their prime Who is still better than 99 percent of bands :D They hadn't played much together since '76 when this was shot so they're a bit off. Roger's voice had gotten a bit more hoarse in the prior few years while Keith was finally breaking down from all the abuse he put himself through and his weight gain combined with that, turned him into a much more lumbering drummer. Gone are his impressive fills and fast stickwork, replaced by more thumping and sloppier technique. And yet, still sounds better than most drummers!

When The Who were performing this gig at Shepperton Studios for their film "The Kids Are Alright", in the studio next door - the movie "Alien" was being filmed. The cast and crew of "Alien" took a break and went over to watch The Who gig. They liked the laser show at the end of WGFA so much, they ended up borrowing The Who's laser equipment and used it in the Alien movie. The Who actually did 2 different shows at Shepperton. The first one lasted about 90 minutes. The director didn’t think the energy level was high enough, so he had them come back weeks later and just do “Won’t get fooled again” and “Baba O’Reilly” because those were the two tracks they wanted for the film. Townsend’s hyperactivity was a response to the criticism of the first show.

Note the gong hanging behind Keith Moon. Instead of a beater, he's got a fourteen pound SLEDGEHAMMER hanging on it. Typical Moon. A quick, but true, short story. In1966, I was working in a musical instrument shop in London's West End. Kit Lambert - The Who's manager at the time - sometimes used to come in and buy bits and pieces for the band. Nothing big, just sticks & strings kind of stuff. But one day he came in and asked my manager if he could rent a kit for Moon as they were gigging the Hammersmith Odeon that night and Keiths kit was being set up at the venue. Keith was also booked that afternoon to do a photo shoot, but had no kit to do it with. Because of Keiths reputation, Lambert was told "No way" - in no uncertain terms. Lambert went on to say that Keith wouldn't actually be PLAYING them, just posing for pics. Anyway, my boss relented and agreed. A little later, Keith came in. I was expecting a roadie, but no, it was the man himself. He asked about the kit and I pointed one out, he said "Fine". I asked him if he had transport - he told me he didn't. I asked him if he'd like me to call him a taxi. He said he didn't have any money. What?? This was the famous Keith Moon! No money? He told me they wouldn't let him have money as he'd probably snort it. I asked him where the shoot was taking place and he mentioned a photo studio about a quarter of a mile away. I said that we'd have to carry the kit... So between us, we carried a drum kit through the streets of Soho and found that the studio was on the fifth floor of a building with no lift. We eventually got the kit to where it was supposed to be, and I asked him to give me a call when he was finished and I'd help him return the drums. Fine. 3 hours later, I worriedly called the studio to ask if the shoot was finished. They told me that Keith had pissed off 2 hours earlier and would I please move these drums that were blocking the stairway. It took me 3 journeys to get them back to the shop. Cheers, Keith.

Compelling laser display for 1978. I remember when lasers were first developed c.1961. The first ones produced "coherent" light by wrapping a flash tube around a ruby rod so the light produced was red. These were blue so probably ionic argon. FWIW. Keith was showing the effects of chronic alcohol abuse and looking unhealthy. He died shortly after this I believe. Pete experimented with psychedelics - everybody did - but quickly became disillusioned and would say that drugs were the "worst things on the planet." This was the last of the REAL Who IMO. They carried on minus Keith and his manic energy. But there was only one Keith

I was fortunate enough to be able to see The Who on their tour supporting the Who's Next album back in '71. Just out of HS and my first big concert! 10 whole bucks to see them too. They were so good that I didn't listen to the album for a month because it sounded to wimpy. Oh, they were loud too. I mean LOUD, my ears rang for a couple of weeks. But the were worth it! (We'll save the story about 9 of us in a VW Beetle for the ride home for another day )

I have seen The Who in concert three times. They are my favorite live band.
