@frankiebowie6174 at first what? She changed people's lives the moment she sang her first tune AND while playing the drums as she sang. What's your point? My point is, she NEVER should have been removed from what gave her JOY - her beloved drums. She sang just as well, and arguably better, behind the kit. She did NOT start having trouble with her body image, which led to the disease that killed her, until AFTER she was told (forced?) to get up and get out from behind her beloved drums. And for each year she performed from that moment and less and less behind the kit... guess what? Her disease got worse and worse. It's obvious. Now. Do you see a correlation there? Remove her from her drums, ultimately taking her away from what gave her her greatest joy and... well. It ultimately was the beginning of what killed her. Period.

She was singing all the way. But you're probably thinking about when she was moved in front of the kit live. This enhanced her insecurities and unfortunately made her struggles worse and got her anorexia that took her life.

@sekulrtsnfnugg6126 I agree. If TPTB had left her alone and let her keep playing her beloved drums while singing lead, like she had for years, I honestly believe that the anorexia situation would have never happened. Or at least not to the degree that it did until it killed her. She never wanted to front the band. She was extremely shy. So many mistakes were made around her. It's heartbreaking what happened to this beautiful soul, this precious woman, Karen Anne Carpenter.

The guy with the drum in the marching band was John Denver. From 1965 (Karen was 15) to 1968 (Karen was18) they played in jazz clubs around Los Angeles as the Dick Carpenter Jazz Trio. In 1966 with Richard on keyboard Karen on Drums and Wesley Jacobs om bass or tuba they won the Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands Playing "Iced Tea" (Richard wrote) and "The Girl from Ipanema". In 1969 they won "Your All-American College Show" (their first time on TV) with Karen still on the drums Richard still on Keyboard but Bill Sissoyev on bass. . In the 60 and 70s Playboy sponsored a jazz festival every year. In 1975 Karen was named Playboy's Best Rock Drummer of the Year.

Karen’s vocal and percussion prowess, there truly NEVER has been or shall be an equal. She created - and owns - a musical genre. Karen Carpenter became established as one of the rare classic voices that will extend to all times. "Superstar" and "Song For You" 4:30 version are starters for your rabbit hole journey. They owned the 70's as they sold more music then any American recording artist.

Drumming was her first love!!! You can just see the joy on her face. She took drum lessons from Bill Douglass, a well-respected jazz drummer with Benny Goodman and Art Tatum. But obviously, she had a natural talent. Too bad she had to come out from behind those drums. She was never comfortable out in front. She called herself a "drummer who sang". I saw them live many times in the 70's and she could be funny when needed, too.

Karen wasn't responsible for the tempo change - Richard was. There's an interview with Joe Osborn and Hal Blaine where they talk about how Richard couldn't hold a steady beat, so they made him play with a click track on all of their recordings. A good video you might want to see of Karen singing and drumming is the Burt Bacharach medley from the Ed Sullivan show.

I've never seen that early clip before. Thank you. Yes, the basic story is that Karen had some issues, and they were exacerbated by criticism. A few reviewers commented on her weight. And one famous fellow-performer once criticized her and her musical style as "so white she's transparent." For those reasons, and just because she loved drumming, she preferred to stay behind the drum kit and sing from there. But because she had such an excellent and unique voice, the group's manager eventually pushed her into standing out front and being more visible. She was only occasionally allowed to drum. I believe they used session artists for studio recordings. And one of their drummers on tour was Cubby O'Brien, the precocious kid who had been one of the original 1950s Mouseketeers. That added to the group's nostalgia image. Some people develop anorexia/bulemia because they feel like it's the only thing in their lives they can be in control of. That might be what happened in Karen's case. Anyhow, we lost her. Very unfortunate.

Back in these times and not living in around a good size city, much news was left on what the local paper could print for their size being low, the radio did not provide much less it was farming news, and local TV did not provide much news leaving what the national/evening new provide being not much either. So, what I know during that time being age 12 in 1968 would be the press, whatever reason, when writing about Karen never missed about her weight/size. I am a summing on TV, for looking like she had some weight or size. I really think they knew this bothered her and was playing up on this. What no one knew Karen was taking this serious, way to serious being she did what she found and knew to lose weight and her size, which she did not need to do. I was so pissed at the media they were lucky I did not go on a shooting spree. I like percussions but cannot carry a tune or beat for my life. Watching Karen on the drums was a blessing seeing a woman playing like she did. Not many women played drums on TV and in bands then in the spotlight Karen was in. Then hearing her sing the songs that was presented to Richard and her was different in that time. Yea, sad how this happened to the brother and sister team. Richard never got over it. I never got over it. It is hard to watch anything Karen even hearing her songs I had to stop playing them. Making me sad would turn to getting angry.

Many believe that one thing that contributed to her eating disorder was when her agents and brother pushed her to sing front and center because it was her voice the world was in love with and she was harder to see behind the drums. For her this was a problem because she felt very visible and self conscious. She 'd have much preferred to stay "hidden" behind her beloved drums. If you compare her live performances, she is somewhat somber/serious when singing front stage, but when shes drumming like in these shes all smiles

If you watch the first clip again you’ll notice that she used both traditional grip and a matched grip. It depended on the song as to which she used. Unfortunately, starting with their second album Hal Blaine and others started playing drums on most of the studio tracks, and other than that drum feature, by 1976 she was no longer playing the drums live either. There are still a fair number of clips with her on drums, but not enough.

I remember watching this on tv when I was in the first or second grade… it made a lasting impression on me. I still revisit this video periodically, even after 50 years. @thomastimlin1724
@thomastimlin1724 2 ай бұрын
Notice the traditional grip! Mr. Buddy Rich once stated that Karen Carpenter was his favorite drummer. You cannot get a better endorsement than that. For those that have no clue who Buddy Rich was, take the time to find out, there are plenty of KZbin videos. Karen could sing and drum at the same time, but they forced her to stand out front and sing and use another drummer, Cubby O'Brien, in the band in live shows. may have been part of her downfall, besides other problems from her perfectionist mother favoring her brother Richard, unfortunately leading up to her death from cardiac arrest related to anorexia. She was thin as a rail when she died. Sad sad sad. She was only 18 in this video. Both Richard and Karen were extremely gifted people. Those that dismiss their music out of narrow musical preference are musical idiots.

Hi Shane! Nothing pleases me more than helping someone discover Carpenters and Karen. The second video was made about one year before they signed with A&M Records in April of 1969 to officially become “Carpenters.” I attended the 55th Anniversary this past April in Downey, California (Los Angeles) it was a 4 day event. It was a magical 4 days including a concert honoring their legacy and the last night was the surprise of surprises when brother Richard showed up for an interview and stayed after to sign autographs and meet the attendees and more. I’m going to recommend two songs. The first is a live performance Carpenters gave on the classic American talk show The Tonight Show, in 1973. The song is Mr. Guder and it features Karen on drums and singing lead. I’m linking a restored version so it looks awesome for a 50 year old video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jX-ZqmqIf9SMrJYsi=f_0t0Zxx5hMX8MNc The second song is by one of the 8 singers that performed at the 55th Anniversary Acoustic Concert. Last March Tori Holub and her collaborator Jim Wilkas released on Karen’s birthday, in her honor. Their cover of the classic Carpenters song; We’ve Only Just Begun. If you haven’t reacted to this song by Carpenters yet, do it first. It’s only proper. This is an homage to Carpenters and was a world wide labor of love. I’ve been following Tori since last October. Seeing her live was a thrill as I knew what the audience was in for and they didn’t. By my unofficial estimate 80% had no idea what was going to happen that night. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGqYnZmAptRsjLssi=3BV4WmduaorSMYZr I’m sure you’re going to get loads of recommendations from the Carpenters Army as they find you. I just did others will, too. I am an OG fan. I knew about Karen’s eating disorder as I too suffered from one, the opposite of what she had but I was in a program then and when she died we were all devastated. The group had all types of people with every eating problem. For me it’s been a life long struggle and today I’m almost at goal and trying to live the remainder of my life in a normal state. I have confidence that I’m better and can do it. I wish you the best with your issues, looks like you too have a handle on it. Very good 🙏. Be well and stay healthy and keep the music alive! Joe

Hi Joe. We both find these, don't we? LOL. I was anorexic in '80,81,82,83 and 84. But because of Karen, I got the help needed to get treated and recover. Wish it had been different for her. I played drums in high school because Karen was my example. If she could, then so could I. I am not going to recommend any other artists at this time, but MORE Carpenters. Karen played drums on most of their early album songs....from Ticket To Ride to the amazing All I Can Do. I had piano lessons as an early teen and I own 2 guitars. I still can’t play any of them, sigh. The bug didn’t take hold, sadly. I recommend because I revere the past but live in the present. @@ericzeichert511 good to talk again. I know what you mean. I was recommending WOJB by Carpenters and wanted to use one of Harvey’s restorations. I realized the two he’s done, neither “sound like Karen.” So I reverted to the classic one in the YOU set. That “sounds” correct. Since I was also recommending Tori and Jim, I wanted the match. No one sounds the same every time, as we all know. You get used to the album cut for so many of the versions. Carpenters lip-synced/mimed a lot back in the day. I’m fighting the fight but scaled back. It was starting to get out of hand on the $ front. I’m retired. So if you notice, there’s less reactions. Some are still in the queue all the way to mid-August. But they’re spread out. I’m hoping some of Tori’s Troops kick in. With 4 items dropping in the near future, that would wipe me out. So I give recommendations and see what happens. I have some friends that love Tori and will do them and one friend is a Patreon. New is by request an a hope. See you around, Eric! Joe
