Definitely Meshuggah!! Their drummer Tomas Haake is another one of a kind drumming monster. They basically pioneered the genre AAL got their start in haha. Tons of polyrhythms, tons of riffs that extend over the bar. I second @moorkowbell 's Clockworks track recommendation. Would love to see you go down the Meshuggah rabbit hole

Listen to his videos. He says chops are extremely important, but useless without swing or feel. He also has math brain, finds pockets in band mates playing, everything. I think he's the best metal percussive musician of his generation. Maybe better drummers, but musicianship as a whole he's on another level of most drummers.

@joelariasdiaz69912 жыл бұрын
I think for better understanding we should say the structure of the song is on 5 and 7 16th note groupings instead 2 and 3... It is 5-7-7-5-5-7. The 5 group is subdivided in two chunks (2+3) and the 7 in three chunks (2+2+3) in that phrase only the first note of each chunk is played and there is where so-called 2 and 3 groupings are coming from

I think you'd really get a kick out of Protest the Hero. They're a pure musician's band, to the point that they've released their last 3 albums independent with paired instrumental versions because they got sick of all the stuff that wasn't making music. It unfortunately means they haven't made a music video in almost a decade, but all their albums are on their KZbin channel. My favorite song off their most recent album is Soliloquy. Easily one of the most overlooked bands on the progressive side of the metal scene. They're masters of writing songs that are ridiculously technical but still absurdly catchy.

Mudvayne's first album L.D. 50 was full of awesome rhythmic patterns like this, and that came out in '99 or 2000. Their song "(K)now (F)orever" has the bass and drum pattern 4,3,2,1 come up a lot (most noticeably around the breakdown at 3:17). Also their song "Everything and Nothing" the drummer Matthew McDonough patterns his bass hits around hit snare drum hits. 2 bass drum hits before snare, 1bd hit before then after snare, then 2bd hits after snare...BBS, BSB, SBB. L.D. 50 opened my mind as a young drummer...alobg with every Tool album of course.
