Being able to play a single stroke roll is important, but nowhere near as important as being able to smoothly transition from a groove into quick, flawless singles. This exercise "Practical Singles" will help you do exactly that!

I read your comment as I was starting to watch the program. After reading about 'Juno' I was expecting some tasty bird walking on,before seeing that Juno is a dog lol ! Nice dog though,I wonder if he named it after the beach which our Canadian brothers landed on next us on D-day.

Perfect. I was just sitting here thinking I should be less lazy this Saturday afternoon. Mike shows up to spur me to action. It’s a dog-day afternoon. I love my Reflexx pad, which I bought months ago after seeing you play it, but it’s already gathering too much dust. Time to go clean up my pad and my playing. Thanks, Mike!

A great lesson as usual. Importantly, this exercise exposes defects in holding the sticks as one switches gradually from wrist to necessary finger action to achieve speed. In my view this should have been one of my first exercises as I started to learn the drums. Never stop teaching, you are an inspiration. Regards, Peter (U.K.)

Thanks Mike. I love this exercise. I have struggled for years and years. Embarrassingly decades , with my weak left hand. I finally couldn't take the weakness and started playing when I can, left handed. Switching up etc. But it's met with a ton of mistakes and it's not really helping me get better very quick. 2 nights doing this for 30 minutes and I feel like my arm is starting to get it. Very seldom do I find a routine that works wonders , this is one. Thanks. Oh, yeah, I'm that rock drummer beating my practice pad like it owes me money lol. 15 minutes of that, 15 dynamically .

Something like this has been my primary exercise for the last year. Except he does R R R R L L L L RLRLRLRL R R R R then flips to the left. I do R R R R L L L L LRLRLRLR L L L L R R R R RLRLRLRL as the whole pattern. This way you have the 16ths going in one hand then start to interweave the other hand without switching the lead hand. For his approach, you switch from 16ths to 32nds at the same time as you switch which hand is leading. His approach you are also only playing the single stroke roll 1/4 of the time instead 1/3 of the time. I'll give his approach a try though. I can't do this at his speed though--I'm 90% there after a year of doing this.

Two things I find about this exercise that really works for me. 1) I can just 'do it' ... not unlike just playing paradiddles or paradiddle-diddles just getting a good flow going. 2) When I play it on my practice kit which has Aquarian Super Pads and I add a BD on the 1 of each measure it really helps me work on my hand / foot coordination. Thanks again.

I would recommend practicing with the same sticks you actually use normally on the drum kit. The reason for this is familiarity. There was a number of months where I couldn’t play my drums so I was practicing strictly on a pad. When I got back to the drums it took me a good week to get used to playing on them because I was used to the pad. It was terrible, I was all over the place. Playing with heavier sticks might throw your touch on the drums out of whack. Just my experience.

This exercise switches quickly between the single types, and quickly between the leading hand. Very cool! ....and my favourite practise pad is the one I can strap around my leg.

The best, more useful piece of advice to take from this video is not the sticking lesson...it's in the beginning. Watch it twice (or more) if you don't get it! The gear you buy, or the money you spend on it doesn't mean anything, if you don't use it. Practice, "putting in the effort" is what makes improvements.
