I’m glad I learned this in class, my CUSH teacher went against school policy and taught us a lot of things others didn’t want to talk about

As a poc that was born and raised in Oklahoma I knew nothing about this from my school system but heard the stories from my great grandmother . It was truly a horrible thing
@onimichelle4340 Жыл бұрын
I, too, only learned of this via Twitter. It should be the first lesson in school for every grade IMO. I'm horrified every time I hear this story. Hate and prejudice truly are the most heinous things on this planet. Thank you for these lessons, Tre.

I learned about the Tulsa Race Riots in undergrad because my professor grew up right outside the epicenter of it. So she told us stories about it and i remember leaving class that day in tears cuz i was so devastated that it happened. Thank you so much Tré for sharing this and thank you for this series. So glad and honored to be following your journey for as long as i have. Good luck at Julliard!

This one really upset me when I learned about it because the innocent who were simply thriving were massacred for no good reason and it’s just infuriating and hurts that people in the present day still don’t know about it
@queerlybelovdd Жыл бұрын
i remember learning about this in my 20s and being shook to my core. because up until then, i'd learned about black american history through a filter of white propaganda. so it was all "and then things worked out" or "and then they were free" turning into this message of if we just pull it together than we can rise above racism. this was the first time i realized how much that's all bs. it still messes me up to hear about this, and seeing it re-enacted in lovecraft country was tough.

Tre I love this series, cut aways with your characters enacting what you're discussing each episode would be funny and interesting as hell, especially with Drea Huge thank you for continuing to bring light and attention to these events, we need to continue the conversation

Thanks for bringing light into my city. Hopefully you can come here one day and see what once was a great and thriving Black Walk Street. Edit: this wasn’t even part of our curriculum, it wasn’t mandatory for us to learn it. My history teacher put it in her own hands to make us do a big project: recreate Black Wall Street on a map- the street names, the rail road, houses, churches, etc; very vigorous and detailed. One day the school on the intercom told all sophomores to report outside by the Walk of Fame. We went out there and our teacher was BURNING our projects. We were livid, but the message was to show how all the hard work was gone in an instant and how those people felt when it happened. We didn’t say anything, we just watched it burned.

I find it incredibly interesting that 2018 a ton of graves were found via radar, digging started in 2020 and only THEN did the Oklahoma Department of Education decide "Yea let's make this mandatory, before we get exposed" like what?

I also didn’t know about the Tulsa Race Massacre in high school. I learned about it in my Intro to African American Studies class my sophomore year of college

I actually heard of the Tulsa Masacre from an HBO show a few years back (I think it was Watchmen?) and I had to go research because I couldn't believe that shit was true. It was insane. I should clarify I am not from or in the US so a lot of Black History is new to me, but most of the major things I had heard of before when I learned about this. It's trully messed up that this isn't taught properly.

Crazy they *conveniently* left this out of my Oklahoma history class in high school. And that it was REQUIRED to graduate makes it all the better in the hypocrisy. But you bet your butt I learned there are 77 counties there. I always hated living in Oklahoma and I’m beyond glad I don’t any longer.

Ngl, I legit knew nothing about this event until now, and it breaks my heart hearing what went on back then. All schools and the people who run them need to do better on making sure every part of history, whether it's good or bad, is taught to all growing individuals that attend their schools. It should not have taken almost a century for these people to finally decide to let teachers talk about this event in classes, it's sad and ridiculous smh😒 But thankU Tre for speaking on this matter and enlightening us more on this lost event in history😊🫶🏾💙
