Here is an instrumental fiddle version of the sea shanty, "Drunken Sailor." This tune is a fun and simple tune to play, and it has a really catchy melody. =) I hope you enjoy this version of the tune! ^_^

Sea shanties were sailor work songs and often had a repetative melody. Versions of this tune have been incorporated into several orchestral arrangements, and the first time I played it was part of an arrangement of folk dances for an orchestra. Since then, I've heard people sing the lyrics often in bars and pubs, and it's a tune that definitely gets an audience excited. It seems like it is one of the few tunes that many people can recognize - even those who do not listen to traditional music very often. It has appeared across multiple production and video games, including "Spongebob Squarepants" and "Assassin's Creed"
There are many lyric verses to this tune, but the lyrics most people tend to sing along to are these:
What will we do with the drunken sailor?
What will we do with the drunken sailor?
What will we do with the drunken sailor?
Early in the morning!
Way, hey and up she rises,
Way, hey and up she rises,
Way, hey and up she rises,
Early, in the morning!
I personally think some of the lyrics get a bit crazy about things to do with a drunk sailor, but it's still a fun tune. It kind of makes me wonder what it was actually like to be a sailor on a boat for months on end during the past few centuries. Technology has really changed everything a lot over the years, and I think it's neat to think about.
I thought I'd try to add more interesting things to this video by creating time lapses of the sun rising and setting, as well as scenery views. Hopefully those things make the video a little more interesting to watch. ^_^ I've also noticed that ever since I started to learn Cello, my violin right bow hand has become so confused. It looks like I'm struggling to keep a violin bow hold in this video, (and trying to morph into a cello bow hold) so I think I need to put some focus into that! =S
Thank you for watching, and I hope you have a good rest of the week! =)
~ Katy

Greetings from Dublin, Ireland. I like her pairing of the main tune "Drunken Sailor" with "Drowsy Maggie" I think the 2 tunes compliment each other which shows the talent/professionalism, of the performer. A lovely arrangement.
@alanmacreamoinn6691
@alanmacreamoinn6691 3 жыл бұрын
There are some instrumental arrangements that marry well with some songs. I've performed a 4 verse rendition of "Star of the County Down" & between the 3rd & 4th verse the instrumental break would be, "The Fermoy Lasses" or the lively song "South Australia" I'd pair with say, "John Ryan's Polka". Just 2 examples. What I love about Traditional Irish music/song is there's no formality or uniform way, a certain piece should be performed. It's strictly left to the discretion of the performer & there's always room for "compromise " re how a certain tune or song is performed. You'd seldom hear the same piece played exactly the same way twice which is why the tunes are so enduring. Legendary Dubliners fiddle player John Sheehan said. He doesn't know how many times he's played his trademark tune "The Marino Waltz" but he'll always perform it a little differently every time, just to keep it fresh, as he put it.

Nice rendition of one of my old faves! When I taught English in Japan, I used to sometimes bring my guitar to class, and I'd play the song, then I'd have the students contribute verses about "What Shall We Do With The Drunken Student" (it was college, so they were allowed to drink ;-) ). We had a lot of fun with that.

I like reading your notes where you describe the history of the song and what equipment you used to make the video. That is helpful info that not a lot of other uploaders provide for their videos. Great job on the playing and for having the courage to delve into the difficult and competitive world of video production. You go girl! Maybe in my next life i can play an instrument like you do and bring joy to people :). Keep up the good work.

Amazing music! Reminds me of when I was a kid growing up in Newfoundland. We would go out around to my grandparents house which was in a small coastal fishing community where everyone knew everyone else. My grandfather loved playing the violin as well. He only ever sat in one place in the kitchen while playing it, and he tapped his foot that much he had the finish worn off of the floor! hahaha good memories for sure! Thanks again! :)

This tune was used in a radio commercial for DelMonte tuna in the late 1950s, maybe 1960. Some of the words they put to the melody were something like "back to sea where we won't go hungry, back to sea where we won't go hungry, back to sea where we won't go hungry, tuna from DelMonte."

Thank you! =) I'll try to work on writing out the sheet music. I'll reply to comments for another hour, but then I'll start writing out the sheet music. ^_^ @Arthur is right about The Session -- it's a great resource for traditional fiddle tunes written as sheet music. They even have MIDIs available so you can hear how the tune is supposed to go. =)
