I especially like the level 0 grind. It really hammers home the point that 'yes you might die' and 'yes this is all the equipment you have, now try something smart'. I know not everyone likes it when the game becomes about player skill, but I find that players find it way more rewarding to think of a cool plan that works, than they find it rewarding to randomly succeed their roll.

I love the character creation in DCC. You don't get to decide who your character is, fate does. You don't roll your stats and say "yeah I think paladin would be best for my stats." You roll your stats and what you get is what you get, and you have to learn to live with it... or die. And die you shall! I'd prefer to run this over 5e any day of the week honestly.

In other words, your character never had dreams, aspirations, or goals in his backstory, so he never set out to condition the Ability Score that would best support his desires for the future.
@HereComeMrCee-Jay Жыл бұрын
@@albertnorman4136 The Level 0 funnel IS your backstory... in DCC you live the backstory through play, you write it with your actions and improbably survival of a near impossible task. And as in real life, your natural endowment may or may not line up with your dreams. You can choose a class that fits well with your stats when you get to level 1... but you don't get to just make up your stats. I understand how this may be off-putting to some (and of course if you buy the game, you can play it anyway you want to). But constraints are actually what incentivize creativity on the part of the player and they make accomplishments taste so much sweeter.

From the moment I started watching this, I knew that I was going to agree with everything you would say. As usual, I was 100% correct. But why stop with magic? DCC does a better job with thieves (i.e. Luck mechanics = James Bond) and warriors (i.e. Mighty Deeds = Conan), too. Why take only one-third of a better system? I'm not hating on 5e, just loving on DCC.
@Runehammer18 жыл бұрын
it is an amazing book and ruleset... I was just neck deep in a 5e group!
@Semiotichazey8 жыл бұрын
What makes DCC a brilliant game is that the mechanics are not designed to simulate our reality or even a cinematic reality, but are instead designed to encourage an extremely enjoyable play style. And it succeeds in realizing this design. Every class occupies a well-defined archetype which is lots of fun to play. If you port DCC magic into 5e, all the other D&D classes will get jealous.
@biannualstabbing23757 жыл бұрын
Some people are very entrenched in the idea of DnD. Talk about DnD in any forum and you will inundated with folks who desperately want to tell you that anything else other than their favorite edition is hot garbage. I started weaning players off of it by introducing "house rules", which were just rules I nicked from other systems like DCC. Then I dropped the bomb on them, that they were only playing DnD in the sense of the setting and the campaign but most of the rules came from other games. That got them wanting to dip their toes into other games.
@RadRat11386 жыл бұрын
Semiotichazey DCC RPG is the official game at the comics/game store I own. We run 5e too, but DCC just gets new people excited about the hobby faster and better by being genuinely super fun to play. It’s both dead serious as an RPG and hilarious all at once.

@@biannualstabbing2375 It was two years ago that you made this post. I am thinking of taking the whole thing to be very "tabula rasa" as a game concept; roll a D20 and roll high: no classes, no spells (per se), just concept. If a player has a concept of a wizard, on an action the player can attempt to cast a spell, swing a great axe, tumble through the fray to get an attack from the rear, etc. The more they succeed the better they get at it. They even learn from failure. I am considering of getting rid of ability scores altogether (at least for early levels).

Fantastic video. I ran a game of DCC for some grognards a while back. They were hesitant to jump from D&D 5e, but had an amazing time. The Campaign lasted over 1.5 yrs. The spell tables are amazing, but.... it's clear that some of them have not been play tested. It's pretty easy for compounding spell effects to take you into game breaking whacky land around 5th level. But overall, my favorite system.

When you hit this nail right on the head, I went and picked up a copy of said book. You are spot on-- this system looks to be the answer. Although I'll be revamping the effects tables more to my liking, this has the potential to make my fantasy campaign like how i've always envisioned it magic wise. I can't wait to test fire this thing. Thanks for the heads up and the laughs!

So many great things in that DCC book! My favorite thing is just the character creation funnel system, but the magic system is great too. I love the way your wizards begin to develop wacky flaws whenever they miss-cast spells. Things like their legs become uneven in length, so they have to limp around. I love the way that spells have a verity of origins and appearances. The fireball I learn from a daemon may look totally different from the fireball you learn from a lich's spellbook. I like the idea that in order to gain new spells, you often need to make terrible pacts.
@Runehammer19 жыл бұрын
+Joey Teske agree. the funnel is just silly to me. also, this magic system defintly asks that your wizard player deeply invest into a more role-played magic.

the funnel is first discribed on page 16, but it's totally ingrained in the entire character creation process. You can run a pre-made adventure for your funnel, or just write your own.

You hit on a lot of points that I completely agree with. I'm always checking out books, magazines, youtube channels, etc for ideas that I can integrate into my rpg campaign. Sometimes it can be a bit tricky since I don't run a D&D game so I need to translate things to work in the Palladium system, but the goal is to push things to make the game more interesting and fun. Spell-hoarding has always been something that annoyed me with magic users who just grab spells without having a reason to do so in the game and instead just use the same handful of spells over and over. To combat this, I make sure I create enemies and situations that some creativity with spells can overcome and in doing so it creates memorable moments in the game. I've also come up with my own spell system for the game I run and a big part of it includes the give and take of the more powerful magic. As you brought up, there should be a real risk/reward when you use these spells and failure using powerful magic should ABSOLUTELY have repercussions. I have spells that even when successful, they harm the spell caster in some form or another and if the spell is a failed roll, there are ALWAYS penalties for it. Since the magic user is wielding such power, it only makes sense for it to backfire if they fail a roll. "Oops, that fireball exploded in your face/fired at your friend/became another spell altogether/etc." It definitely keeps the player in check when they decide to use spells as well as choosing new ones as they level up. "Do I want to take 'disintegrate'? It could do a lot of damage to my foes but it might also kill me if I screw it up".

The character funnel. Brilliant. You get that old school feel of how deadly the world can be but don't waste your time crunching a bunch of unnecessary numbers. Also, I love character backstories. But it can suck if you wrote three pages of backstory and had your character die to the very first trap on the very first door. The DDC character funnel allows you to experience the deadly, deadly scenarios of yor and not be worried about character backstory until you make level 1. I've ran the 0 level adventure in the book twice for two different groups. lot's of fun was had. Hey, I recommend it for pick up games alone. The rules at level 0 are so simple you can just roll up and go!

I understand why you want to get rid of cantrips... but I would like to tweak that idea just a bit. We get rid of combat cantrips and some other cantrips too, and instead have "personal powers". Basically, personal powers are a side effect of dabbling in magic, and their effects are usually not too crazy. This allows wizards to still feel pretty magical, while still making sure that actual spells are still special.

I really wish you could have gone into more detail about the system itself. Are there even spell levels in DCC? I don't know, and I'm hesitant to go buy something just to check it out when I don't know how well it would fundamentally slot into 5e.
@Runehammer17 жыл бұрын
you face a great wide unknown...what will you do?
@ardinhelme6877 жыл бұрын
hope that you'll be a little less cryptic and a little more helpful? I like what is presented in the video, but it doesn't explain how easy or hard it would be to switch spell casting systems, for example: if DCC doesn't have spell levels then it will be very difficult to implement in 5e because 5e spell casting is largely dependent on spell levels.
@ThunderStruck156 жыл бұрын
Ardin Helma I know this comment is old, but they still have the playtest PDF online for free- it's not as good as the current version, and most of the weirdness is cleaned up now, but it gives you a good idea of the system. That being said, it's 25 bucks for the core rulebook, and it includes a starting adventure.
@ardinhelme6876 жыл бұрын
So, I'll be honest, I may have been a bit rude a year ago. I stand by my wish that there was more information on how the system itself works and how Runehammer implemented it, but I probably could have been a bit more tactful in my response. For anyone with a passing interest, I did end up buying the DCC core book (once it got another printing so it wasn't so expensive since it was somewhere around $100 when I first watched this a year ago), as well as the Liber Arcanum. I have fallen in love with DCC magic, I love funky dice, but I also love 5e. So the premise of this video is everything I could hope for, but at this time I still haven't been able to figure out exactly how to implement what has been proposed here, and that's why I pressed for more information when I first saw this video. Now, I am currently working on my own solution (after a year of digging into DCC as well as more of the RPG genre as a whole) and I will make sure to share whatever I end up with, but if Runehammer does happen to see this comment I would still like to see a video going into how you implemented DCC magic into your 5e game. I know it had to do with an item you called the Book of Formless Magic, but how did that item work? Did you implement DCC magic into other 1/2 or 1/3 caster classes? Did you add the Luck stat to your game as a whole? If so did you use that Luck stat for anything else in your game? These are the questions that plague my mind, but this comment has gotten away from me... My main reason for making this comment was to apologize for my rudeness a year ago and explain my standing, and I suppose I have done that, thank you to anyone who took the time to read this, I apologize for being so long winded.

I've totally grafted this (W&W) onto my own home game, which is a mashup of 0D&D and 5e. It's a brilliantly simplified yet malleable magic system that's evocative of classic D&D spells but so much more! It accomplishes what DCC's magic system does, in way less pages.

dbretton $10 is more just to support the creators content. a lot of the work that comes out of the OSR is only possible because of the way the community supports and funds each other through patreon/pdf purchases etc. sure they post a lot of that stuff for free, but for paying a little extra you get it compiled in an easy to read easy to use (at the table) format with great art and extra content. I think of it less as a "purchase" and more as paying for a sort of deluxe edition

So, do you have room in your game?

the wild magic sorcerer would make sense using this system, but clerics to search out their spells or knowledge, they are granted their magics by their gods, so forgetting a spell wouldn't be possible for them. this actually stands the same for druids and warlocks as well b/c they are granted knowledge by their power source. that being said, the unpredictability of the DCC system works perfectly for a wild magic sorcerer, and I do like the idea of having special instances from crit hit and crit fails

I'm a very new subscriber, and I've only watched a handful of your videos. Have you done more drink-jameson-and-spout-truths videos? Because this is a genre of videos that I need more.

sounds similar to unearthed arcana. Instead of casing a bunch of little spells you can do a couple big customized spells with a chance of it blowing back in your face.

I'm currently working on porting over various mechanics from DCC into a loosely 5e game. Curious as to how you would approach bards, paladins, and rangers from 5e if you were to be implementing DCC magic rules into your game? I'm considering just pulling the trigger and running DCC as is, but 5e does have some mechanics that I like and a ruleset that I feel comfortable adjudicating.

Old school D&D didn’t have bards, paladins and rangers, he’ll there were no difference between class and race, these are all modern additions to D&D. DCC keeps it old school, a wizard is a very different class to the warrior and I like that, instead of 5E where every character is a magic-using fighter to some extent.
