Thank you so much for creating these. I had a static compiled site using Grunt, Sass, and Jade/Pug and I couldn't find anything comprehensive about how to go about creating a Drupal8 theme from something like that. Now that I know how D8 is interacting with themes better I can totally integrate my build setup. Kudos.

I had a similar problem. My solution was to ensure that the gulpfile.js and package.json files were in the correct location, (in the /sites folder), then after installing gulp (I used `sudo npm install gulp -g`) I had to run the gulp commands from within my theme_name root folder. then it worked.
@per-net99119 жыл бұрын
Hi Ivan Great tutorial. You helped me a lot to getting started with Drupal 8 theming. Why are you copy the gulpfile.js and package.json in your Drupal 8 root directory? Isn't all the stuff you nee inside your endymion theme folder? I don't like to paste files into the root directory because i’m afraid to delete them unintentionally running updates or copying the files to another location. All the tasks your are running are inside the theme, arn't they?
@WatchandLearnTutorials9 жыл бұрын
+Pierre Meyer You can leave those files in endymion theme, no problem. I'm putting them in the root because I'm lazy :) ... so that I don't have to go to my theme folder every time when I want to run "gulp watch" :) that's the only reason.

How can I install npm when working on a shared web server? Terminal says "bash: sudo: command not found"
@WatchandLearnTutorials5 жыл бұрын
You should not do that. And also on most shared hostings you can't. You should develop everything locally, and then push that to the server, preferably with git, but shared hosting seldom has even git support, so you should upload it via FTP.

+Niklas Wennerstrand Did you follow this video when doing update kzbin.info/www/bejne/g52vomNrjZqrgdk . I don't think these errors have anything to do with Gulp.js. You are missing some files, global-js and main.js. did you check you theme for those files, are they in the right folders.

+Watch and Learn Hi Ivan I am getting there ... I now have gulp watch operating and files css (style, style.css.map) have been created and css changes re vid 10.20 are working but the rest of my styling has disappeared! Looking at source the message reads: "Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404 (Not Found)" with reference to: "blip.dd:8083/themes/custom/fiss/js/main.js?o0gapi" (fiss my custom theme name/ blip where drupal core is placed) When I look into the js folder I noticed nothing there because you/we deleted the content (vid 3.41) However reading in the libraries file do you have "js/main.js" (vid 3.50) but main.js according to vid (4.00) is located in the lib folder. Is there a mistake here? Should the main.js have been moved to the js folder or should libraries.yml be altered to lib/main.js (as well as any dependancies in the gulpfile.js)? Thanks for all your help and sorry if I am leading you on a "wild goose chase"!
@WatchandLearnTutorials9 жыл бұрын
+Bruce Clark You just put all of your javascripts in the lib folder. Start "gulp watch" and then pick one of the javascript files in the lib folder, make a small change and then save it. Then gulp should trigger and take all the files in lib folder concatinate them and save just one main.js file into /js folder. That is how it works. And since you didn't run gulp on js you are getting 404 not found for that file.

Hey there, great tutorial! But one thing I saw is, you merged modernizr with your other JS, so it gets included in the bottom of your page. What a great video series, but I am having trouble with part three. I am on windows 10 and whenever I try to use gulp-watch I get a copy of my css file in my sass folder. This causes a gulp error telling me that gulp does not know which partial to use, globals.css or globals.sass. the global.css file is sent to my sass folder instead of my css folder. I have copied your zip file from github. If I run just gulp sass I get exactly the same problem, ie thecompiled css file is sent to my sass folder. I have been trying various fixes for this, but with no luck. Any ideas? Thanks.
@WatchandLearnTutorials9 жыл бұрын
+John Eardley Are you sure you are using files from GitHub? Because you shouldn't have globals.css files compiled. Because that file is a partial and it should be compiled down to style.css and not to global.css. Something is definitely not right with your configuration. Try copying files from github. Move gulp.js and package.json to the root of your Drupal install. And in the root run "npm install". Then run gulp watch and see what happens.

I get the new css file exactly where it should be (in the css folder), but I still get a copy of the css file in the sass folder I get the same error: "It's not clear which file to import for '@import "g;obals"'. Candidates: -globals.scss -globals.css Please delete or rename all but one of these files on lin 11 of stdin >>@import "globals"; If I delete the globals.css file (and the globals.css.map), gulp watch allows me to make a change again, but still re-produces the files in the scss folder. Also the livereload does not work although I have livereload enabled in the browser. If I do a manual browser refresh I can see my change (Background from old to new color).

+John Eardley This makes no sense to me. Tell me something - when you open "sass" folder do you see "_globals.scss" file in it? And notice the underscore. The only reason why you would get this weird behaviour is if for some reason the files in sass folder don't have underscores.
@eardles9 жыл бұрын
+Watch and Learn my sass folder looks like this: sass susy -fonts.scss -footer.scss -globals.scss etc. my styles.scss folder looks like this: @import "susy"; @import "su"; etc. After I run gulp watch I see the change in the css folder (I change the body color to red or some other color) and the sass folder now has the following in it: style.css style.scss style.css.map In my css folder I get: style.css style.css.map When I make a change now to my global.scss file I get the gulp error as shown in my previous post. I found this query and wonder if anything in there could throw any light: github.com/sass/node-sass/issues/215
@WatchandLearnTutorials9 жыл бұрын
+John Eardley Files in the sass folder must have underscores. So "globals.scss" must be called "_globals.scss" with an underscore before the name. Only file without underscore should be style.scss.

It's a shame that we can't follow through because of the multiple deprecations problem...because really, is a seriously interesting course and the one and only that goes deep into the theming section of Drupal. Please consider to make one updated version of it!

You can skip this video if you can't get Gulp and so on to work. Although since this tutorial has been made almost 6 years ago it would be better to use something like Webpack or maybe Laravel Mix or even the new version of Gulp. As for the updated version... no... I'm not touching Drupal ever again :)

I went through a pain running npm install on your current package.json with "gulp-sass": "^2.0.4".... After taking out the line and install gulp-sass independently with 'npm install gulp-sass' I ended up with "gulp-sass": "^4.0.1" .. After that npm install command worked fine. .. Linux ..You might want to update that file. Apparently version ^3.0.0 works fine. And again thanks... Your videos are helpful.

It is possible to continue the Tutorial without gulp.js, Sass and LiveReload??..... I´ve been trying but can´t get gulp working. Edit: gulp is working nice now.
@WatchandLearnTutorials4 жыл бұрын
Sure. you don't need any of that, also, you should probably use something else in 2020 (Webpack, Laravel Mix, BrowserSync etc.)

What about 'sudo'? This part is quite obscure to me. BTW: nice tutorial - thx.
@WatchandLearnTutorials9 жыл бұрын
+Andrew Tonneman Well if when you run 'npm install' you get errors then you should run it like this 'sudo npm install'. sudo means to run a command as root user, that way you won't have problems with permissions. Of course if you are on Windows I don't think you would be needing that.
@AndrewTonneman9 жыл бұрын
+Watch and Learn Well, I'm on Windows. I shall watch your video again and see if that changes my perception, because I'm still uncertain about what you're actually installing...
@WatchandLearnTutorials9 жыл бұрын
+Andrew Tonneman You are installing modules that are required for gulp.js to work. If you don't do that you won't have any sass compilation, livereload etc. You of course have to have node.js installed on your machine.

Permissions issues even using sudo: I can't install Node-Sass. I'm using $ sudo npm install. There seem to be basically three errors involved: - (Node-Sass): mkdir EACCESS -> Unable to save binary to node_modules/node-sass/vendor -> Permission denied - (Node-Gyp): mkdir EACCESS -> Configure error / permission denied -> node_modules/node-sass/build - (Node-Sass): ELIFECYCLE (I'm guessing this is just the consequence of the above). High Sierra 10.13.3 Gulp 3.9.1 Node 9.5.0 Sass 3.5.5 (Is this even relevant? Sass is not LibSass, and Node-Sass (which I presume comes bundled with Node) comes with LibSass. So probs irrelevant but there you go. Thanks for the great videos!

could not install gulp and had to do this to get it to work(im on w8.1) : -download and install node.js -go to this pc > right click on "thispc" and open properties > advanced systemoptions > open Environment Variables (bottom) > edit "PATH" to C:\Users\*user*\AppData\Roaming pm;C:\Program Files odejs > press ok > press ok > press ok -After that reboot your pc -Then open cmd > use the "cd" command to go to your file dir where your site is. - excecute the command "npm install gulp" Now it should install, atleast that did it for me. hope this helps anyone EDIT--- gulp watch does not seem to work for me, get error about gulp-reload EDIT-- so after allot of shit and throwing around my laptop I got "gulp watch" to work : -go to your dir with cmd. -type in npm install gulp-livereload -type in npm install gulp-uglifyjs -type in npm install gulp-sass -type in npm install gulp-autoprefixer -type in npm install gulp-sourcemaps -type in npm install gulp-imagemin -type in npm install imagemin-pngquant EDIT-- change file paths for it to work if you use this method : -return gulp.src('./themes/custom/endymion/images/*') is the original path, change it to -return gulp.src('./images/*') Because I installed gulp in the root folder of my site it didnt change anything. now it works like a charm !

Fantastic tutorials! I just got to a halt and could not find a solution by using google. Maybe someone here can help with my issue? When I enable the Gulp thingy on my development folder I got a couple of warning and then the installer just sat there ideling and doing nothing. Had to force stop it. The warning was the following: $ sudo npm install npm WARN deprecated gulp-uglifyjs@0.6.2: Since gulp-sourcemaps now works, use gulp-uglify instead npm WARN deprecated lodash@1.0.2: lodash@
@WatchandLearnTutorials9 жыл бұрын
+Niklas Wennerstrand Did you try to run "gulp watch" and check if it runs anyway. I get those same warnings, but everything works fine. Also try to update Node.js maybe that is the problem.
@niklaswennerstrand10109 жыл бұрын
+Watch and Learn I installed Node v4.2.3 LTS Mature version before my issue. Now I have updated to Node v5.1.1 Stable Latest and the install do not stop any more. I still got the warnings but it seams to work by installing Node v5.1.1 before sudo npm install. Thanks! :-) Just another note. To make it to work you also need to remove the folder node_modules before you run "sudo npm install". the npm install will then create a new working folder with the same name and after that you can run "gulp watch".

First of all, I love to work with Gulp, but this time I've been using Webpack/Laravel Mix instead. gist.github.com/carlosbensant/d6b8336e67a0b71877d923a4771f519b I stopped the video to leave you a comment about where I saw you to put your gulpfile. I preferred to place them inside the theme and not outside, why? because what does it do outside? If I'm going to move my theme to another project, I'd just have to move the theme and not other files with it.
@WatchandLearnTutorials6 жыл бұрын
I think I said it in the video, you can put it wherever you want. I usually put it in the root because of pure laziness, that way I don't have to cd into the theme. Either way is fine.
@carlosbensant6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your quick reply. Yes, you did a mention about where to put them. I agree as well on the fact to avoid overusing 'cd'.
