Excellent review! I went with the Trelino because the bags you can get anywhere (you mentioned you can even use grocery bags). With the Laveo, you have to purchase their proprietary cartridges, which can be an issue if you are traveling and you run out. That was the #1 con for me against it.

My preference is a seven gallon plastic utility bucket with a Leaktite or Gamma Seal screw-on top. To use, I unscrew the top, add a kitchen garbage bag, and put a section of pool noodle or pipe insulation round the edge for comfort. And the bucket comes in handy for other stuff as well!

We've been using the midsized Trelino Evo in our Aliner Ranger 12 for about a month now. Typically, for two people, we empty the urine pail every morning and rinse it out. We have used the Trelino for number 2 frequently. It works very well with a composting or drying material. We've used coconut coir, clay-based kitty litter, and now we're using potting mix, which works perfectly. There have been no problems with odors in our trailer at all with either urine or stool. The key is to keep the two of them separate and the Trelino works exceptionally well for that. My wife is the one who uses the toilet and she loves it. [I empty my pee bottle into the Trelino each morning.] The unit is compact and fits under our bed when we travel. When we are camping, it fits in front of the door and serves as a separate little bathroom. Lastly, the Trelino is far less expensive than similar diverting toilets. Even so, it's well made, strong, and durable. We highly recommend the Trelino -- with which brand we have no affiliation.

We used Thetford porta potties for 26 years, but now use Trelino and love it. Easy to empty the urine container and we use single use composting bags for the solids. Solids bag goes in the garbage. As a male I still use a pee bottle and my wife uses the Trelino. We use a mixture of vinegar and water in a spray bottle to squirt the urine capture area after each use.

The Wrappon Trekker dry flush is similar to the Laveo. It’s made in Japan and is the Lexus of dry flush toilets. It heat seals the plastic waste bag instead of twisting it to seal. The per flush is less then half the Laveo but the unit is about $600-700 more at around $1600. Like to see a comparison between these two dry flush toilets. We’ve used both and prefer the Wrappon slightly vs the Laveo

Been using the immediate disposal method for poop on our sailboat for years. No holding tank to worry about. We use grocery bags and put the used bag into a used potato chip or corn chip bag to keep the odors away. Have you ever smelled potato chips in the snack isle? No because all the bags are airtight. We just save the used chip bags and they work very well if we can't get to a disposal place right away. Trelino for us in our current van build. And.....thanks for the great comparison video....well done.

We have a Nature's Head in our trailer and I'm probably going to change to the Trelino. The Nature's Head is not easy to dump and clean. It's heavy to drag out, and a job to clean. The urine bottle is hard to clean as the hole is small but the Trelino's urine bottle has a big opening, you can put your hand it (with a glove :) and are able to scrub it.

In my camper van I use an easier, low tech and inexpensive toilet solution. I line my barrel-with-lid hassock style portapotty with a plastic bag, add a cup or so of horse-stall grade pine pellets and get 1-3 days use camping solo. The pine pellets fluff up to sawdust which absorbs urine, with no odor at all. I sometimes add PooPowder as a supplement. There's no messy liquid to deal with. It's easy to dispose of the resulting non-toxic sawdust in any basic trash bin. The pine pellets are very inexpensive at about $6 for a 40 lb bag which lasts a long time. I divide the bag of pellets into smaller zip locks to tuck away in nooks and crannies around the van.

The Trelino is definitely a winner. It needs one improvement. A cutout that allows the urine container to be visible so that seeing how full the container is can be determined without taking the container out.

I love my Laveo. It's sturdy and I don't feel like I have to do a balancing act to use it. I have to use the bathroom at least once (sometimes twice) a night. I like using the powder that converts liquids into a gel. The product is also great at removing the smell. Then I flush in the morning. The replacement cartridges are expensive but in a pinch I'll use heavy duty bag liner and powder to convert liquids into a gel. I agree about the assessment about the mylar bags. It sounds great, but sometimes, you'll end up with a random tear or hole. Out of the 15 or so cartridges, I've only had one be bad/tear. The liner bag kept everything contained though. I highly recommend the Laveo. Even with the cost, I love this option the best. I hope they come up with a better environmental option though. All in all, great product! Thanks for the great video!

None of them "compost". For the Trelino odor & absorption use pine nugget bedding from Tractor Supply. Cheap. Odor absorbing. A urine diverter insert can be bought for under $100. Two containers, some plywood and a toilet seat you're done for about $150. 👍

Nice review. Based on my field experience (full timer), I find it absolutely essential to have a fully functioning compost toilet with a vent fan. I initially built a Trelino type set up (no vent fan), this severely limits its potential, the smell and inconvenience for one time usage bags gets super annoying. I see the potential of adding a vent fan to the Trelino and modifying it as a full blown compost toilet. On a side note, if the difference between a regular compost toilet like Nature's Head vs Trelino is only $200, I'd go with Nature's Head.

I do disagree re re only using the Trelino for #2 emergencies. We use our Trelino full time for #1 and #2. No smells, no mess and super easy to empty. We can go about 2 weeks before we need to empty the solids. After each #2 use we throw in a handful of Mini Hemp Stalks (rabbit bedding). OH and when we changed to wet wipes rather than toilet paper it's a game changer. We put the wet wipes in a tiny small bin. Wet wipes allow the solids container to last a lot longer. Urine separating is the way to go. So much easier and cleaner than other toilet types.

BUT I’m seriously considering switching to a separating toilet bc I spend over $600 on toilet cartridges in a few months AND I have to haul around the cartridges. This last trip I went to Alaska and they do ship to AK which is great but $100 for shipping AND I’m hauling around an entire front seat worth of cartridges and constantly doing mental math on how many I have left and whether I can make back home on that many remaining. It’s driving my decision on where I stay for the night (access to a toilet which is typically a vault toilet) -bonus - if I never have to use a vault toilet again- that could be worth it lol

There's an optional silicone plug for the pee bottle. I don't plug it tightly (it's narrow/long, like a graduated stopper), so I don't imagine it would be a problem. Without the plug, the built in silicone gasket is very pliable and would breathe well enough with altitude.

We use a Trelino-like toilet. Composting is BS, btw, it's human waste. There's a reason farmers are not allowed to use human waste as a fertilizer whereas cow or even pig dung is ok. As long as you manage to dry the 💩, it has next to no smell. What we use is a bag of sawdust that we keep next to the toilet (I'm also a woodworker :-p ). The waste bag is 'primed' with a 1/2" layer of sawdust and the 'flush' is to sprinkle a layer of sawdust on top of the 💩. And it even works if you're a bit unwell and have a less-than-optimal consistency - you just use a little more sawdust than normal. We can go for a long time w/o emptying the waste bucket, and I am willing to bet it's even less offensive than what you have to deal with as it feels more or less a bag of sawdust and not a very soft hot dog in a large plastic bag :-)) . No odor whatsoever regardless of the temps. A million times better than the cassette toilet we used to have. We do have the vent hooked up to the toilet with a computer fan that runs all the time (Trelino has the same system IIRC), but I am not even sure that is completely necessary. We use composting plastic bags and as all we're tossing out is the bag, sawdust and poop, I don't think the environmental impact is even as large as with diapers. The main reason we switched from the cassette toilet was because of the smell and overall gross-out factor when dealing with a full cassette. Never going back. I am seriously considering going this route on our boat too as I am not fond of dealing with the tank and even less fond of the stink in the head when conditions combine to make the system operate less than 100%. The work involved in removing the holding tank is the main thing that's held me back till now.

What about toilet paper used with #1? Into the poop bag compartment to wait for the next disposal? Or into a separate waste can?
@thrivans10 ай бұрын
I would put it in the poop bag compartment.

I use the poop bag compartment for tp, but I also toss paper trash and coffee grounds in there.

I'm 105 kg/230 lbs man. What's gonna happen when I sit on plastic Trelino? Am I gonna crack ti? Is it gonna brake?

The Trelino is rated at 330 lbs.

So the Trelino is a bucket literally how is this a comparison to the dry flash?
@bassmonk292011 ай бұрын
Leaving your van on a hot day the Trelino might surprise you when you open the door...
@donnaniles38328 ай бұрын
As long as you don't leave the waste bag in, or pee bucket that hasn't been emptied or at least closed, when you leave your van you shouldn't have any problem even in a hot climate. We used a nature's head in our RV for 3 years then in our cabin for 6 years and it was fine as long as you take care of it. But I will say I much prefer the Trelino with the compostable bag over our nature's head.

Trelino is called a separating toilet and there's now a lot in this category.

Have you ever used an incinerator toilet in a van build?
@thrivans10 ай бұрын
We have not. Incinerator toilets require a huge battery bank. Not really practical in a typical van build.

Trevino also costs about 800.00 you didn't mention that. I realize it was given as a gift maybe you didn't know that. I do like it much better . Trevino 👍

Try natures head compost toilet.

Wait…do you simply leave a pile of dooky in the toilet so you can save bags? How on earth can that not smell…?
@404-Err0r5 ай бұрын
Good video... but I completely fail to see how these 2 are remotely similar. One is almost maintenance free and the other is completely full of maintenance. One requires a lot of manual handling, the other has again near next to zero. I'd much rather see alternatives to the dry flush that is perhaps cheaper in price but with similar hasslefree maintenance.

"And you just throw it away". You just "dump it"? I wonder where? Do someone else have to handle bags with your "nr 2"?
@revekat20536 ай бұрын
People throw away poop in the trash all the time with diapers, doggy doo, and litter boxes.

I like the Trelino but i cant find it in Australia
@vanlifeoverlander678510 ай бұрын
They are made in Germany. I believe shipping to Australia shouldn’t be a problem.
