Dry fly fishing from a moving drift boat requires a particular skill set, especially on the Yakima River where we deal with LOTS of technical currents and challenging casting situations. Watch this video and get prepared for your next float!

A customer of mine sent this to me. As a dry fly first outfitter on the Upper Madison for the last decade, this video captures virtually everything I try to teach on a daily basis. You've described aspects of this technique so much better than I have and I'm looking forward to explaining things the way you just did. So much of our job is using the right words to describe certain movements and actions. When customers "get it" it's a thing of beauty to watch and a joy to row. Well done. And the behind the curtain observations about what goes on in a guide's mind when anglers drift back is so true, ha! The targets just start snowballing like tetris blocks and a full reset is needed.

What a great piece of feedback, thanks so much Justin for sharing. I learn things from other guides and outfitters all the time and its refreshing to get feedback from dudes that "get it", it's a symphony of tight loops when you have a couple of good sticks in synch with one another!

Joe, thank you for producing this helpful video. I have 2 days of floating with Leif coming up next week. So, this video is a good primer and reminder of those techniques that will help develop me into a better fly fisher with dries on the Yakima River or wherever. I sincerely appreciate all your efforts. This video may be one of your best all time. Tight lines.

Great video. Can you do more videos on rowing technique and strategy, particularly with two anglers in the boat? I often find myself in my boat with a friend rowing who is constantly back and forth in distance from shore and has the nose of the boat constantly towards shore. It’s frustrating fishing (particularly in back) and I’d like to be able to send him some quality videos to look at. Thanks for the great videos!

Hi Joe. Very good tips for float fishing, some tricks of those tips and tricks I’ve learned on my own, some taught by others, but have a time and place for success. Watching you out there on the drift boat really makes me want to be there too. Great video as usual, thanks. BTW, I’m still stoked from my Belize trip and permit! Have fun.

As a snobby Delaware dry fly fisherman, I expected to not learn anything, but was wrong. Great video, picked up some tips. The short leader thing isn't applicable wher eI fish, but I get it.

Dude. This is such a helpful and engaging video! I feel like having this info BEFORE going on a drift trip is so helpful! I had to learn the hard way fishing the green river for the first time and wasting half a day casting 90 degrees at the bank. So pumped to use this info on my next float trip!

I thought the length was fine. Information plus some great fish. I think a video on how to fish the back seat . The front will always leave some place to cast to depending on speed of the water. I almost always fish a streamer from the back and sometimes cast to a good looking spot the front angler has cast to. Thinking he may have juiced up a brown. As far as walking the dog, I’ve used for years and love it. Try a Turks Tarantula over a Duracell and be ready. The eats are vicious.

Great info! Will be forwarding this to some of my boat mates:) quick question on oars… I saw both square tops and red smoker bandits. Looking to upgrade from counterbalanced. Thoughts… pros and cons likes and dislikes?

I like the Smoker Bandits, I've had both and the Smokers feel very stiff at first but either they softened up or I got stronger haha. The Square Tops have a nice flex, but the lighter weight of the Bandits is my preference.
