I throw dry great northern beans pods in a pillow case. Toss them in the dryer on air dry. Most pop out if they are really dry pods.

@@RainCountryHomestead I'm going to try this method sometime. This guy picks the whole plant instead. He then wraps in a tarp and drives over them. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jX_ZaIx8o89_mtU Picking individual bean pods is hugely demanding.

Those are stainless steel cooling racks found on Amazon. Back in the day I used to grow horticulture beans if you can find them they are good. Also when leaving the beans on the vine don't worry about the black spots on the pod. They are still good, oh and I live over on the Tulalip reservatIon so we are almost neighbors. LOL I like your videos Heidi and hope you keep providing such good information.

These racks are not on Amazon nor are they cooling racks. While you can look there and find some that look similar and would work as drying racks, these are not the same. These racks are made to go in a smoker or dehydrator specifically and I have only been able to find them in our local store. We have even gone so far to try to contact the company that makes them and still could not get anywhere. The difference between these and standard cooling racks is partly the square shape (cooling racks are typically rectangular) and mostly that they have a finer mesh which means you can put a lot of small things on them that you would not be able to put on a cooling rack. I really wish I could find them so I could share the link with people but I have tried many times to no avail. I do not worry about the black spots on the pod, those happen, BUT, here the beans inside the pods WILL mold if left on the vines out in the heavy rains that we get. I know because I tried it.. There are towns that are only an hour away from us that just do not get the kind of rain we do. Until one actually lives here, it can be hard to understand but again, comparing the average annual rain of Seattle and most other towns over there of 50" a year to our 120" says a lot. When I lived in the Seattle area, I thought I understood what a lot of rain was...then I came here and learned just how wrong I was, haha! :D

We love growing our own dried beans, we have light kidney, pinto, a small black and white bean called calypso, Christmas lima, black-eyed peas and our Kentucky wonder beans dried. I'm going to try chick peas next year. We save our shelled pods and use as fire starter. It lights easy and reuses them, rather than in the compost pile or garbage. We pull our beans once the majority of the beans look mature and let them dry on the vine, this year we has unexpected early snow, so gathered the plants and placed them in the greenhouse to finish drying, it's working well.

I find the greenhouse to be a great place for lots of things like that once all the tomatoes are done. Even give the chickens a dry but bright place to hang out on those super rainy days.

Here in the harz in Germany we get 45 inches of rain and I only managed a few mature enough to harvest. We had a cold spring and early summer this year though. Here we get a few days rain then a few days Sun but early winter it pours. I've seen pictures of snow piled nine feet high but lately we might get three feet. The people here get depression from the weak sunlight in winter even though we have a lot of winter sports outside. I imagine you might need to take a holiday down south to get some Sun. Ive had sugar peas sprout inside the pods before they even get a chance to dry out. How do you manage in spring in the greenhouse ? Does it warm up well with the cloud cover or do you run your seedlings around inside and back outside ?

You can check out my gardening videos from this past spring to see how I start tomatoes and more. Such plants that prefer warmer weather get started in the house or in the greenhouse. Tomatoes and peppers only get moved once from the house to the greenhouse. They they either get repotted or planted directly in the ground, they stay in the greenhouse. I will experiment with a few tomato plants as I always have way more than I have space for in the greenhouse out in the other garden areas but I get very little production from those

Where I grew up in central Washington, that is about the amount of rain we got. Then I moved to the west side of the mountains and things are very different on this side. Non Washingonians think all of Washington is wet but not even half of it is that way and we live in the wettest part of the wet side! haha

Cam, I can tell you that I put 3 beans in a large pot. They completely cover about 7x7 foot area and higher if they could hold on to something. I have not harvested much as green beans, I want to have some dry ones. By the looks they do very well, first ones are turning brown and dry and they still put new blossoms on (which I started to trim here and there, they will not mature, but the bumblebees LOVE them, so I keep some going). I will try to see how many I get and report back 😉
